TEACHING
(a)
Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments
Sabbatical
Medical leave
Sept – Nov/1999
May – Dec/1997
Areas of special teaching interest are those that relate to my research areas of intellectual freedom and access to
information, and library architecture and planning.
While at SLAIS, I have created three new courses related to information access: LIBR 520 Collection
Management, an elective course taken by 90% of all master’s students; LIBR 569J Issues in Intellectual
Freedom and Access, originally offered every two years, but now offered each year; and LIBR 594b Seminar in
Information Ethics/Intellectual Freedom Research, a course unique in North America which will be offered for
the first time in September 2005 for master’s and doctoral students.
I have taught LIBR 578 Library Architecture and Planning in alternate years since 1991, the only Canadian
library/information school to offer this specialty on a regular basis. This course draws interest from MLIS
applicants across North America, and also from the professional community. If space is available in the course,
graduate librarians frequently register as special students. Over the years I have developed unique digital image
teaching tools to enhance instruction in this course, and am working toward future web-based delivery.
After assuming responsibility for the required LIBR 590 Research Methods course in 2000, I changed its focus
to action research, a move that increased the popularity of the course and its relevance to practicing information
professionals.

SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
(a)
Areas of Special Interest and Accomplishments
My research focuses on information ethics and intellectual freedom, particularly as these topics relate to the
history of the library profession, public libraries, library collections (including the internet), and censorship
imposed on special groups. Most of my research projects can be categorized as action or applied research, based
in the information community (not the laboratory). The needs of the library community are often the catalyst for
a project, and the research results have immediate applicability to practice. I envision my research as the
“mediating discourse” between information theory and practice, connecting the isolated dialogs that occur
within each sphere.
