The Rosa Lee Carter Register June 2014 June Calendar ● 6/5 Field Day—3rd- 5th Grades ● 6/6 Field Day—1st & 2nd Grades ● 6/12 5th Gade Graduation ● 6/13 Last Day of School It is hard to believe this is the final newsletter of the year! As I reflect on the past three months, I am so humbled by the hard work and heart of this community. Rosa Lee Carter families have welcomed me with open arms and have made my transition an exciting and smooth one. During these last three months numerous new families have visited our school and as they walk our hallways and see the exciting activities your children are engaged in, many of them quickly make the decision to relocate to the Rosa Lee Carter school zone. I contribute these decisions to the fantastic job of our teaching and support staffs, in addition to the pride and commitment to excellence you have instilled in your children. Together we are making a difference!! ● 6/18 Report Cards Mailed Home ● Web Calendar The last two weeks of school are packed full of fun and excitement. Our 5th grade promotion will be on June 12th at 8:30 AM. Even though our 5th grade class will be deeply missed, we are confident they will represent Rosa Lee Carter well, in academics and with a strong character. You may have noticed a large stone that dawns the entrance of our school. This is a gift from our 5th grade class to Rosa Lee Carter Elementary as a symbol of their coyote pride and their legacy to the school. I am working with our art teacher, Mrs. Hassinger, to create a painting that will be placed on the stone as a farewell to the 2014 5th grade class. Our last day of school is June 13th and report cards will be mailed home on June 18th. I have had a strong outpouring of positive feedback with regards to my weekly calls. These calls will continue next year in the effort to keep our community highly informed of events and activities. Summer will soon be upon us and I want to encourage all of our children to read at least 20 minutes a day. This will sustain comprehension and vocabulary growth that was observed throughout the school year. In closing, I would like to thank all of our families for their overwhelming support this year. I look forward to a fantastic fall and the children arriving back to school with vim and vigor. Have a wonderful summer break!! Starting a home library shows the importance of reading and encourages children to read more. Unfortunately, there are some families that aren’t able to provide this opportunity to their children. Rosa Lee Carter will help those less fortunate by creating home libraries for these students. As your child matriculates to another grade level, please pick out books that your child has enjoyed reading. Send the selected books in his/her backpack to be dropped off as they come to school. There will be two beautifully decorated boxes placed in the foyer next to the school entrance. Please only donate books that you once loved and would want to give away to kids we all care about. Your generosity is much appreciated! The Book Drive will happen from June 2nd till the last day of school... 43330 Loudoun Reserve Drive, Ashburn, Virginia 20148 Phone: 703-957-4490 Attendance Line: 703 957-4491 http://www.lcps.org/carter The Rosa Lee Carter Register The Rosa Lee Carter Register The Artist’s Brush June 2014 Students are busy finishing projects! It is always so much fun to have students compare their work from the first day to what they can create now! Everyone has learned so much in just one year! Our 5th graders are especially busy. They are painting tiles for one of their gifts to the school. Each tile represents one student’s likes, dreams, or even what they plan to be when they grow up! The tiles will be installed in the hallway near the music room. Parents, long trips made during the summer by plane or car can be tough on students. Going to an arts and crafts store is the cure! Simple, fun projects can be purchased to keep your child busy and happy, as well as a great creative outlet. Are you interested in summer art lessons? I know of two teachers who give classes. Please e-mail me for their contact information if you are interested. Summer is a great time to create! Guidance What a wonderful school year it has been learning and growing in our Coyote pack! We have had a lot of fun in the process. Mr. Hak and Mrs. Saxe hope the students and their families have a safe and relaxing summer! Here are a few fun ideas of activities to do with your children: Visit the zoo. Visit an art, history or science museum. Go to the park. Pack a picnic lunch and invite some friends! Go fishing. Have your child learn about the different types of fish he or she could catch. Go biking or hiking. Go to the public library. There are many great activities and programs going on all summer long. Practice good citizenship! Pick up litter in a park, work in a shelter serving food or contact someone to find out ways the whole family can give back to the community. Teach your child how to cook and bake. Measuring and learning to follow recipe instructions is a great experience for children. Write! Have your child write down their thoughts, feelings and experiences in a journal or write letters to your friends and family. 43330 Loudoun Reserve Drive, Ashburn, Virginia 20148 Phone: 703-957-4490 Attendance Line: 703 957-4491 http://www.lcps.org/carter The Rosa Lee Carter Register The Rosa Lee Carter Register June 2014 Physical Education at RLC Music During summer break, we encourage the students to stay active, get outside as much as possible, and try to practice some of the skills we teach throughout the school year. Fourth and fifth graders will fitness test in the fall, so staying active during the summer will result in better test scores. Students who stay active and develop good habits concerning physical activity early in life are more likely to stay active as they get older. Keep your kids moving and have a great summer! It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of another school year. It’s been a wonderful year in the music room! You can always keep up with your music skills by singing, going to concerts, playing instruments and visiting some great music websites (see below). Happy summer! www.classicsforkids.com/games - composers, note names, rhythms www.pbskids.org/jazz – Explore jazz music www.nyphilkids.org – Fun music games for children of all ages www.sfskids.org – A site that explores the orchestra and instruments Search For parents/guardians seeking information about the gifted education in Loudoun County Public Schools, there is no better place to begin than on the LCPS Gifted Education website: http://cmsweb1.lcps.org/ Page/617. The first and most basic question is often “Why does gifted education exist?” The website answers it this way: “All students need to be challenged to their utmost potential. For students who are rapid-paced learners, who have high intellectual aptitude, or who are very talented in a specific field, these programs help ensure that they are challenged academically and intellectually.” Take time to visit the LCPS Gifted Education website for lots of announcements and details about the eligibility process for gifted programming. We look forward to another great school year in 2014-2015. 43330 Loudoun Reserve Drive, Ashburn, Virginia 20148 Phone: 703-957-4490 Attendance Line: 703 957-4491 http://www.lcps.org/carter The Rosa Lee Carter Register The Rosa Lee Carter Register June 2014 Library Summer break is almost here, and there are many ways to help your child maintain his/her reading skills to avoid the summer slide. The Loudoun County Public Library has a wonderful summer reading program that your child can participate in beginning June 16. This year’s theme is “Fizz Boom Read” with an emphasis on STEM activities. Our librarian, Mrs. Alpher, will be sharing more information about the summer reading program with your child during library classes. She will display sample library materials such as Playaway audio books, Playaway View video books, and eBooks. Each child will receive a bookmark from the public library with more information about the reading program. Follow the link to see the schedule of wonderful programs being offered at each library location. You can also make reading fun for your child by having him/her read directions to a game, a fun recipe to make, or a brochure about a place they would like to visit.
