Weekend Mill Tours
A variety of tour types are available. All funds raised through tours go
to the non-profit group Yates Mill Associates (www.yatesmill.org)
and support the mill’s ongoing maintenance and operations.
Saturdays at the Old Mill Tours
July 5, 12 & 26, Aug. 2, 9, 23 & 30 and Sept. 6, 13 & 27; between 1-3 pm
Join us for a half-hour guided tour (starting at 1 pm, 1:30 pm, 2 pm, 2:30
pm or 3 pm) to view the historic mill’s main power drive and milling
machinery, and explore aspects of the mill's history and preservation.
For all ages; fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60+), $3/Child (ages 7-16),
Children ages 6 & younger are free. Preregistration is encouraged.
Mill Heritage and Local History Tours
July 6, 13 & 27, Aug. 3, 10, 24 & 31 and Sept. 7, 14 & 28; from 2-3 pm
Discover Historic Yates Mill - a place of business, community and
exciting local history! Explore the inner workings of the mill itself and
witness the power of water as it turns the milling machinery. For all
ages; fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60+), $3/Child (ages 7-16),
Children ages 6 & younger are free. Most appropriate for ages 7
and older. Preregistration is encouraged.
Corn Milling Demonstrations
Yates Mill’s full corn grinding operation is demonstrated on the third
weekend of each month from March through November and can be
viewed by taking a half-hour corn grinding tour with a costumed guide.
Costumed Corn Grinding Tours
Saturdays, July 19, Aug. 16 & Sept. 20; 10 am-12 pm & 1-4 pm
Sundays, July 20, Aug. 17 & Sept. 21; 1-4 pm
It`s 1863 at Yates Mill and the yard is alive with activity! Step back in time
with our 19th century costumed interpreters and watch the millstones at
work grinding corn into meal. Tour fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60 &
over), $3/Child (ages 7-16), Children ages 6 & under are free.
Preregistration is encouraged. Tours are not available between 12-1 pm
and the last tour of the day begins at 3:40 pm.
Yates Mill merchandise is for sale during the corn grinding
weekends, while stone-ground cornmeal and mill postcards
are available daily 8:30 am to 5 pm in the visitor center.
Weekday Mill Tours & School Programs
Organized groups and schools can explore the mill’s history and
operations by participating in a guided mill tour and other hands-on
park programs such as pond studies, nature hikes and more.

Historic Trades Demonstration
Free demos and displays for all ages are
available each month from March to November.
Preregistration is not required. Stop by anytime!
Ice Suppliers and Tradesmen
Saturday, July 19; between 1-4 pm
Cool summer treats like ice cream, snow cones, and
popsicles all have one thing in common. Ice! Valued
around the world for its cooling purposes for thousands
of years, it was first harvested as a sale-able commodity
in the United States in the early 1800s. Explore the
history of this often overlooked essential ingredient
and try out ice bowling. For all ages; fee: FREE!
The Candy Maker
Saturday, August 16; between 1-4 pm
Did you know that candy was originally a form of
medicine either used to calm the digestive system or cool
a sore throat? Due to the high cost of sugar and the
specialized knowledge needed to make candy, it did not
become widely available in the United States until the
early 1800s. Join us to learn about the trade of candy
making, taste some penny candy, and take a trip around
the globe to explore the world’s favorite sugary treats.

Kids' History Detective Tour
Saturday, July 12; 11 am-12 pm
Do you have what it takes to be a History Detective?
Come to Yates Mill and find out! Solve puzzles, hunt for
clues, and investigate the mystery of milling with real
historical artifacts. Most appropriate for ages 5-12. Fee:
$4/Child (ages 5-16), Children ages 4 & younger are free.
Fee for accompanying adults: $5/Adult and $4/Senior
(ages 60+). Preregistration is required.
Special Event:
9th Annual Fall Harvest Festival
Saturday, September 20
11am-3 pm
This free family-oriented event includes costumed corn
grinding tours of Yates Mill, a fun children’s scavenger
hunt activity, live music and dance, story-tellers,
community displays, hand-craft demonstrations and sales,
antique vehicles, farm tool displays, food vendors, and
much more! Preregistration is not required.

Up, Up and Away Astronomy: Stories in the Sky
Friday, July 18, 7-8 pm
Make a sky chart and learn what constellations are in the sky this
season. Learn some sky-related myths, then write your own! For
ages 8 and up. This program is weather dependent.
Yates by Night: Night Riddles
Friday, August 8; 8-9 pm
Join a park naturalist for a walk in the park after dark. No
flashlights allowed! Find hidden clues along the way to answer a
night time riddle. For ages 8 and up (with an accompanying adult).
Recreational Adventures
Preregistration is required.

Paddle the Pond
Saturdays, July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27
10-11 am and 2-3 pm
Come out to Yates Mill Pond for a morning canoe float.
After basic instruction, explore the pond’s many features as
seen only from the water. Canoes, paddles and life jackets
will be provided. This program is subject to suitable
weather conditions. For ages 6+ (with at least one
accompanying adult); fee: $10/Boat.
Family Fishing Fun
Sundays, July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28; 9-10 am
Natural Explorations
These programs encourage families and friends of all ages to enjoy
a park experience together. FREE! Preregistration is required.
Take a Child Outside
Monday, September 29, 5:30 – 6:30 pm
Spend some quality time enjoying the great outdoors with your
family while getting some fresh air and exercise. Develop your
child’s interest in nature and listen to a park naturalist as they share
their knowledge of and experiences with nature and wildlife.
Summer Camps
Yates Mill’s camps offer your child hands-on history and nature
activities including tours of the old mill, visits with live animals,
hikes, crafts, games, and more. Each day offers a different theme.
There will be 2 adult staff with the kids at all times. Kids bring their
own lunch and snacks. Preregistration is required.
Time Detectives
Monday—Thursday, July 7–10; 9 am–4 pm
Ages 8–12; Fee: $154/child
(Track 4, traditional and homeschool)
Attention Gumshoes, there's been a burglary at Yates Mill and
we need your help! Collect clues, solve puzzles and bring the
thieves to justice! Using science, art, archaeology and interviews
with historical people, we'll learn how real historians solve
history mysteries every day.

Come out to the millpond and fish the old-fashioned
way - we'll provide you with a cane pole, tackle, and
bait, along with basic instructions and assistance with
identifying fish species. You'll need to bring your own
luck and patience! For ages 5 & up, with
accompanying adult; fee: $5/Family or $3/Person.
Track Out Days
Track out at Yates Mill! Children in Grades K-5 participate
in curriculum-correlated activities, together and by
grade-level. Great for homeschoolers and track outs!
Join us for one, two or all three days. Fee: $12/Day
or $30/For all three days. Preregistration is required.
Carolina Clues
Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 26-28; 1-4 pm
Attention budding detectives, there's been a burglary at Yates

Messing About in Boats
Monday, July 21; 10:30 am –12 pm
Ratty, Badger and Mr. Toad love spending leisurely summer
days boating on the river. Folks coming to Yates Mill did, too!
Make your own simple boat and enter it in our Mill Pond
Regatta. One never knows what sorts of adventures a simple day
on the water can bring. For ages 6 and up (with an
accompanying adult); fee: $4/Child. This program is available
upon request for organized groups during the month of July.
Flights of Fancy
Tuesday, August 19; 10 am –12 pm
What do Leonardo da Vinci, Otto Lilienthal, Orville and Wilbur
Wright and Amelia Earhart all have in common? They all
studied aviation or piloted airplanes. In celebration of National
Aviation Day, join us to learn the history of flight and the
historical figures that made it possible through fun experiments,
games, and crafts. For ages 8-12, fee: $4/Child.
The World of Beatrix Potter
Thursday, September 25; 10 am –12 pm
Beatrix Potter was a naturalist who used art to tell stories. Learn
from her techniques to make stories of your own! Celebrate
National Comic Book Day with this outdoor creative experience
for "Take A Child Outside" week. For all ages; fee: $4/Child.
A Teddy Bear Picnic
Thursday, July 10; 12-1 pm
A "Teddy Bears' Picnic" is a song with a 1907 melody by
American composer John Walter Bratton and lyrics by Irish
songwriter Jimmy Kennedy in 1932. It remains popular as a
children's song today. Grab your own lunch and teddy bear
from home, and join us as we "go down to the
woods today" for a fun picnic together in the
park. We'll explore the history of the Teddy
Bear and play some sweet bear games.
Light The Way
Thursday, August 7; 11 am-12 pm
August 7th is National Lighthouse Day! North Carolina is
home to nine lighthouses including Cape Hatteras, the tallest in
the United States. Join us to hear the true heroic tale of Abbie
Burgess, a young woman who was forced to run her family's
lighthouse alone in the winter of 1856. Play a lighthouse game
and make your own model lighthouse to take home.
Constitution Day
Wednesday, September 17; 11 am-12 pm
On this day we celebrate the adoption of the United States
Constitution. Join us to learn about why the constitution
is important and make your own Statue of Liberty hat
and torch to take home.

Art in the Park
Golden Years Nature Walk
Wednesday, September 10; 8:30 – 9:30 am
Walking helps you stay strong and fit! Join us for a short
nature walk (3/4-mile) just for seniors. Learn to identify
native plants and wildlife and visit the park's two boardwalks for
some nature viewing. Binoculars will be provided or you can
bring your own. Make sure to bring water and wear
sturdy hiking shoes! For ages 55 and older.
* Project Friendship *
Sunday, August 3; 8:30 am—5 pm
Come by the park center anytime to participate in a collaborative
community art project celebrating Friendship Day. A variety of
artistic materials will be provided to help you to express your
vision of friendship and goodwill. For all ages; FREE!

animals play and why play
is important.
Listen to a story about Johnny Appleseed,
who's based on John Chapman, the
American frontier nurseryman. Play
"fruit dash" and "apple bushel toss".
Then create a seed work of art!
