Kentucky Statewide Trauma/Emergency Medicine Symposium
Description
Target Audience
The Kentucky Statewide Trauma/Emergency Symposium provides
an exciting opportunity for health care professionals seeking innovative approaches to trauma and emergency care. The program will
cover clinical management of the trauma patient, including pre-hospital care, resuscitation, acute care and rehabilitation. Designed for
the team approach, this multidisciplinary forum will feature
national and local physicians, nurses, paramedics and other experts.
This program is directed toward physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, EMT/EMT-Ps, respiratory therapists,
radiologic technologists and other allied health care professionals
caring for emergency and critical care patients.
Objectives
Upon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to:
• Identify epidemiological factors related to trauma/emergency
• Describe the pre-hospital, medical and nursing management of
specific emergency conditions/injuries or complications
• Analyze selected contemporary issues affecting trauma/
emergency care systems
• Examine current research and trends of care for the
emergency/trauma patient

the extent of their participation in the activity. The University of
Kentucky College of Medicine presents this activity for educational
purposes only. Participants are expected to utilize their own expertise and judgment while engaged in the practice of medicine. The
content of the presentations is provided solely by presenters who
have been selected for presentations because of recognized expertise
in their field.
For Nursing CEUs, Emergency Nurses Association has approved
the following: Advanced Pediatric Life Support course: 8.0; General Session Day One: 6.4; and General Session Day Two: 5.6. Attendance on both days for General Sessions will result in approval
of a total of 12 contact hours for the registrant.
Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics
Education credit (equal to nursing CEU’s outlined for each course)
will be provided by the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical
Services and the Kentucky Emergency Medical Services for Children Project. A certificate will be provided to each attendee. For

Other Allied Health Professionals
All other health care professionals for whom preapproval has not

CME and CEU certificates for physicians, physician assistants,
registered nurses, EMT/EMT-Ps and respiratory therapists will be
awarded at the end of each session.
Note
Certificates for continuing education hours will not be distributed until
the daily conclusion of the program with submission of an evaluation form.
Partial continuing education hours are not an option.

Although this course is designed for physicians, other disciplines are
encouraged to attend. The APLS Course focuses on the evaluation,
diagnosis and initiation of treatment of many pediatric medical and
surgical emergencies during the time the patient’s condition is being
stabilized in the clinic or emergency department. Major topics to be
addressed include Pediatric Assessment, Pediatric Airway, Central
Nervous System, Medical Emergencies, Cardiovascular System,
and Trauma. Advanced Airway and Advanced Trauma Procedures
skill stations will be included. The course will require advance
acquisition of the textbook APLS: The Pediatric Emergency
Medicine Resource and independent study and completion of
online “Check Your Knowledge” questions for six chapters. At
the end of the 1-day course you will take a Course Completion
Examination. Your course completion cards will be mailed to you
at a later date. Cost: $100

In this 8 hour program, ambulance operators will learn practical
defensive driving techniques -- focusing on the operator’s ability to
read traffic conditions, act accordingly, and prevent collisions in
both emergency and non-emergency situations. Cost: $25
