The program will cover clinical management of the trauma patient, including pre-hospital care, resuscitation, acute care and rehabilitation. Designed for the team approach, this multidisciplinary forum will feature national and local physicians, nurses, paramedics and other experts. This program is directed toward physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, EMT/EMT-Ps, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists and other allied health care professionals caring for emergency and critical care patients. Objectives Upon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to: • Identify epidemiological factors related to trauma/emergency • Describe the pre-hospital, medical and nursing management of specific emergency conditions/injuries or complications • Analyze selected contemporary issues affecting trauma/ emergency care systems • Examine current research and trends of care for the emergency/trauma patient Disclosure Faculty presenters of continuing education programs sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Medicine are expected to disclose any real or perceived conflict of interest. Copies of faculty disclosures are included in participant program materials or given prior to the lecture. Continuing Medical Education Physicians Nurses The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Kentucky College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 12.5 AMA PRA Category 1 TM Credits . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics Education credit (equal to nursing CEU’s outlined for each course) will be provided by the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services and the Kentucky Emergency Medical Services for Children Project. The APLS Course focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis and initiation of treatment of many pediatric medical and surgical emergencies during the time the patient’s condition is being stabilized in the clinic or emergency department. Major topics to be addressed include Pediatric Assessment, Pediatric Airway, Central Nervous System, Medical Emergencies, Cardiovascular System, and Trauma. Advanced Airway and Advanced Trauma Procedures skill stations will be included. The course will require advance acquisition of the textbook APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource and independent study and completion of online “Check Your Knowledge” questions for six chapters. At the end of the 1-day course you will take a Course Completion Examination. Your course completion cards will be mailed to you at a later date.
