Our vision statement: To illuminate the plight of America’s vulnerable and forgotten foster children, making foster care truly temporary. Our Programs Recruitment Heart Gallery/Professional Photos - This is a photo exhibit of waiting children. Our photo exhibit has grown from one location to over fifty! We arrange to have professional photos taken of children, and then we make the photos available for distribution nationwide. Targeted Emails - We run a report from our extensive database and select families specifically fitting a child’s special needs and wants. Matching Events - Social workers present children from their caseloads to an audience of prospective adoptive families via an online webinar. Permanency Family Finding - This is a search-and-reconnect process to help find lost relatives and others who may have been in the lives of foster children when they entered care. Mentor Program - Our mentors are dedicated to investing their time in the youths they serve, instilling independence and confidence and teaching everyday-life skills. Extensive Team Recruitment - Finding permanent parents for teens before they’re required to exit the foster care system at age 18 is the single greatest positive youth-development program there is. Family in 30 Days - Family in 30 Days is a new program with the goal of finding a relative’s home within 30 days of a child’s entering foster care. Life Books - All children leaving foster care must have a Life Book, which is created to preserve their past. Family Services Heart Gallery Adoption Agency - The Heart Gallery Adoption Agency was founded with the goal of assisting children waiting in foster care to find their forever families. Matching Assistance Program - This program was created to assist families through the adoption process. We are able to provide guidance, answer questions, create support groups, mentor families, and extend knowledge of available resources to adoptive families. Welcome Books - Welcome Books are created by adoptive parents as a way to 2 A FAMILY FOR EVERY CHILD / HEART GALLERY IS SEVEN YEARS OLD! Due to the enormous support of our community, we have gone from an all-volunteer organization in 2006, working out of our homes and with one Heart Gallery, to an organization with 13 programs, all geared toward getting kids out of foster care. Our days are filled with matching children with the most permanent connections, family and/or mentors we can find. We work locally, statewide, and due to our extensive web presence, nationwide. Without the support of our generous community, none of this would be possible. We welcome you tonight to celebrate this milestone with us. Thank you. Guest Speakers Kyara spent nearly nine years in foster care. Five years ago she was adopted by her forever family. Kyara is an eighth-grade student who is active in her church, likes volunteering, summer camps, dancing, running and playing with her two dogs and three cats, She’s recently taken babysitting classes and is looking forward to getting jobs in the near future. Her passion is helping kids in the foster care system find their forever families, and one day she would like to mentor. Miley’s life changed drastically after she was adopted. She now has a mom and a dad who love her and care for her. She enjoys spending time with them, and she also loves gymnastics and swimming. She loves having a brother, her own room, and awesome clothes and shoes. “I am so thankful for the Heart Gallery for finding my forever family. I sometimes can’t believe this is my life -- but it is, and I am so happy,” says Miley. 3 Home for the Holidays Social & Boutique Auction PROGRAM 5:30 P.M. Silent Auction and Wine Wall 7:00 P.M. His very first restaurant experience was as a high school student at McDonalds on Hilyard, where he was in charge of the fry station. In fact, the fries at Hole in the Wall Barbecue go through the same procedure that McDonalds used in the 1950s. In 1973, he opened Quigley’s on West 7th Avenue, and then in 1976, he followed with a larger Quigley’s at 18th and Chambers. It was truly a state-of-the-art, finedining establishment. He had “been there, done that,” and sold all operations in 1980. He moved to Roseburg and managed the Miller Beer distributorship until 1985, when he decided to go to warmer weather. He had two brothers in the Phoenix, Arizona, area and opened another site-development company. His office was next to a wrecking yard, and after some research, he started a salvage and car-crushing business. By 1992 it was time to come back home, where the majority of his family was. He has three daughters, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. After spending about nine months deciding what he wanted to do when he grew up, he decided to open another restaurant. Barbecue was something that he had not done before, and it really appealed to him, especially when the old original was only open three hours per day and five days a week – ah, to have those days back!! Of course, he couldn’t leave well enough alone, and now there are three Hole in the Wall locations. These keep him very busy, but he has always believed in taking the time to give back to the community that supports him. This is very important to him and he is involved in a number of charities and fundraisers, including A Family for Every Child, and others such as MDA, CASA, the American Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer’s Association – just to name a few. 5 Jessica Pellatt Jessica Pelatt is a new Executive Board member at AFFEC. She began volunteering through our Mentor Program four years ago, where she met and mentors Elizabeth Kinney. She received her M.S. in Education from the University of Oregon and tutors in Creswell. Jessica also chairs Creswell’s Parks Advisory Board and volunteers with Branches of Valor International, a faith-based organization that supports service members, veterans, emergency responders and their families. Elizabeth Kinney is a proud mother to her daughter, Yelena, and she is a student at Lane Community College. She discovered she was pregnant not long after agingout of the foster system, and she has been working diligently to build a life for her daughter and herself. She is attending college part time while she cares for her daughter and looks for work. She plans on entering the culinary program next fall. She would like to be a pastry chef (she makes a mean cheesecake!) and dreams of one day owning her own bakery. 6 ARE YOU READY TO RAFFLE? Don’t miss your chance to win! My passion in life is singing, and I have been singing since I could talk. I have had the opportunity to perform at various competitions, including Portland Teen Idol. I am currently a part of Soul’d Out at Wilsonville High School, which is an a cappella group that has placed in the top for schools in Oregon and nationwide. Recently I sang at my brother’s wedding. I have a big, loving family now. The first 13 years of my life, I was in foster care with my two brothers. We were in many homes over the years. Luckily, my parents came across the A Family For Every Child website, where we were later pictured on the front page. Now we have a home. My older brother, Daniel, and I were adopted three years ago. I love having lots of brothers and sisters and being the baby of the family. I am also an aunt to three (and soon five) nieces and nephews. Thanks for helping my parents and me find each other and for letting me perform tonight. His wife, Hank, is assisting him this evening. Their support is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Please take a moment to thank them for their efforts. Thank you for attending A Home for the Holidays Social & Boutique Auction 2013 14 SUCCESS STORY Many times we are asked, "How can you do what you do?" Usually this means working long hours or with difficult situations. What we would like all of you to know is how blessed we feel to be in this job. We get to do something that makes a difference! Our work is truly difficult only when we can't find --or others won't help us look for-- a happy ending. What we do at AFFEC every day is to fight for that happy ending, which is a family reunited or a child finding his/her forever family. We want to share with you a recent happy ending that came true for one little girl. Nevaeh, a special-needs child, would typically be deemed a difficult case for finding a match. However, after one targeted email (an email we send out to all our families who might be a potential match), we were overwhelmed by the response and love of many waiting families for this young girl. One email that took one volunteer less than one hour to create found Nevaeh a family. We are thankful for everyone who believes in and makes these happy endings come true. 15 BIDDER NUMBER Be proud of your bidder number -- show it often! Special thanks to our committees and volunteers! “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” We would like to extend a special thank-you to all of our committee members and volunteers. Without you this evening would not have happened. The contributions, talents and expertise you brought to the planning and execution of this event are immeasurable. Although too numerous to mention, each of you is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Thank-you 16
