RE-IMAGINING LIFE, ADJUSTING TO CHANGE
January 20 – 21,7 PM Tuesday – 4 PM Wednesday
This Retreat is for women over 50 who are
adjusting to change in their lives. There are times
in our life journey when we are visited with sudden
or unwanted change. We will accept God’s
invitation to re-imagine our lives and become aware
of what brings hope and energy to this second half
of life. God invites me to “follow my bliss.” What
am I passionate about now, and what is true for my
authentic self? God is still creating me! Donation:
$75. Residents and commuters welcome.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SERRA VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE
CALL AND RESPOND
In today’s first reading, we hear Samuel
answer God’s call: “Here I am; speak, for your
servant is listening.” In the Gospel account, two
of John the Baptist’s disciples follow Jesus.
Andrew, one of the two, hurries to tell Simon,
his brother, of the discovery of the Messiah
and brings Simon, to be named Peter, to
Jesus.
In the spiritual life, God rarely reveals in vivid
detail the exact nature of what lies ahead in our
journey of faith. God asks for our trust. He
provides light for each footstep. We are
reminded by St. Paul that we do not walk this
journey alone. The Holy Spirit strengthens us
to follow Christ. “I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.”
The Pantry is in NEED of the following.

Prayer for Vocations
The Church has been led by the Holy
Spirit from the initial birth of the Church on
Pentecost Sunday.
The Spirit continually invites all of us to
spread the Word of His love in all different
ways throughout our lives. Some will be
invited to serve the Church as their lifelong
vocation. It takes a great deal of courage and
love of God to respond to the call of ministry as
a lifelong commitment. We are in great need
of men & women to hear the invitation of the
religious life. We are inviting You to accept the
Vocation Prayer Chalice, take it to your home
for a week and place it as a reminder to pray
for vocations.
Let us pray that many young people of
our parish will consider the call of the Holy
Spirit to serve God’s people in ministry.
Thank you
for praying for vocations.

Chalice, please call Ann (609)-267-5836

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Giver Project
by Deacon Jim Casa
This winter's parish "read the book - see the
movie" is off to a good start and participating in
the The Giver Project will provide an
opportunity to read a profoundly compelling
story about values and how we discover their
power to change a life.
The 41st anniversary of the US Supreme Court
"Roe vs. Wade" decision on January 22 brings
to mind the importance of all pro-life issues and
readers will find the pro-life themes contained
in The Giver to be both remarkable and
insightful; this story about a future time and
place, revolves around the central character,
Jonas. Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is
under control. There is no war or fear or pain.
In fact, there are no choices. Every person is
assigned a role in the Community. When
Jonas is of the appropriate age he is singled
out to receive special training from the Giver.
The Giver alone holds the memories of true
pain and pleasure of life. Now, it's time for
Jonas to receive the truth for the betterment
and continuation of his society. Jonas will be
the new Giver. There can be no turning back.
As we progress in this frigid January, get your copy
of The Giver and begin your reading
experience. We will gather on Friday, March
27 at 7:30pm to watch the film version of The
Giver, featuring Oscar winning Jeff Bridges and
Meryl Streep. Afterwards, we will enjoy a
spirited discussion. So, get a cup of your
favorite hot beverage and begin reading , The
Giver. Read future bulletins for updates.
LENTEN LONGINGS
RETREAT 2015
Lent invites us to a time of prayer, reflection
and conversion. Make a six-week retreat led by
John Madden, parishioner and certified spiritual
director, by exploring the Sunday readings of Lent.
The theme of the retreat is For the Life of
the World. Participants are called to commit to
works of social justice and the ongoing conversion
of hearts as we entrust to God our lives and our
communities this Lent, praying that they might
become – through God’s grace – a gift freely given
“for the life of the world.”
We will have an administrative session on
Tuesday, February 17th to distribute materials. The
retreat will begin on Friday, February 20th (two days
after Ash Wednesday) and will run for five more
sessions: on Thursday, February 26th, Friday, March
6th, Thursday, March 12th, Friday, March 20th and
will close on Thursday, March 26th (before Palm
Sunday). Sessions run from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the
school library. There is a charge of $10 for the
materials which will be collected at the
administrative session.
Please register by contacting John at
[email protected] or (609) 261-3642 not
later than February 4th to allow sufficient time for
ordering materials.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Living the Good News Today
“Ears open to obedience You gave me…”
Anyone who has ever served in the military knows the
importance of obedience. Whenever someone is sworn
into the Armed Forces, the oath of enlistment or
commissioning has verbiage regarding obedience to
authority. This basic discipline is critical to national
security and to defending the lives of many people.
For my first Air Force assignment, I reported for
duty in the late spring to Rapid City, SD, to a base that
looked westward to the Black Hills and eastward to the
wide and vast prairie. There was so much to learn there
as a newcomer from the East Coast: disaster
preparedness training to survive severe and bitter
winters; understanding the local culture, including the
rules regarding the nearby Native American reservations,
protected lands, and ranches; and obeying all of the
unique requirements of the Strategic Air Command
(SAC) while the Cold War was in full force.
As a member of SAC, every member became part of
a pyramid alert process that notified us of impending
recall. Sometimes, the pyramid alert would be invoked
simply to pass on information about severe weather and
notify those who were “mission essential” on special
duty instructions. Other times, the pyramid alert was
simply tested to see how long it took to contact every
member within our wing and to report what percentage
of success there was in reaching everyone. In the most
adrenalin-producing scenario, though, the pyramid alert
was exercised to start our wartime mission, never
knowing for certain whether or not this was just a test
(like the Civil Defense messages we have heard on our
radios and TVs) or some real-world engagement. It was
unthinkable that anyone would disregard the call and be
disobedient.
Today, it is not uncommon to hear people talking
about complex issues that are going on in the world.
After the emergence of the Warsaw Pact, the Cold War
maintained a high profile until the collapse of the Berlin
Wall in 1989. Presently, we continue to witness the
effects of insurgencies within countries that weaken
political structures and put millions of people at risk for
basic needs of safety, survival, and human dignity. How
easy it is for people to forget that God is always holding
together the world in which we live! How well do we
listen to God? Have we opened our ears to be obedient
to the Lord?
There is a thread that is common to all of the people
who are mentioned in this weekend’s readings: the
young prophet Samuel; his mentor, the prophet Eli; Paul,
the apostle to the Gentiles, and the people of Corinth;
and John the Baptist, Andrew, another unmentioned
disciple, and Simon, Andrew’s brother. Each of them
heard a call to listen and to respond with an obedience
that demonstrated a willingness to conform their own
will to that of God’s. Even the author of Psalm 40
echoed that so well: "In the written scroll it is
prescribed for me, to do Your will, O my God, is my
delight, and Your law is within my heart!"
How many people do we know who have heard God
calling as did the young Samuel--insistently? Only after
the third wake-up call did Eli realize that God was
calling Samuel, who was too young to realize what that
meant. Perhaps we know someone who told us of a
persistent call to a particular matter. Other times, we
have heard people discussing dreams that they have had
in which they try to sort through the meaning and
whether there is something to be done. We can also be
challenged by the people that we meet along life’s
journey, especially strangers who reach out to us, and we
wonder about the call to respond.
Like the pyramid alert rosters, we must learn that
same attentiveness that Eli taught to Samuel. If we
exercise our will regularly, we will find ourselves being
transformed. Here are three things to ponder:
Silence: Do we carve out daily time for a period of
silence to listen truly with the “ears” of the heart to what
God is speaking to us? How do we use the sacred pauses
during the Mass in which we are gifted with silence
(after each “Let us pray…,” Scripture reading, the
homily, and the reception of Communion) to experience
the oneness in Spirit with the Lord (temples of the Holy
Spirit) that St. Paul described? Do we delight in those
moments?
Contemplation: What are the ways in which we pray?
Do we spend time with Sacred Scripture and meditate on
the Word of God? What do we hear God saying to us
that prompts us to give Him glory and praise—a new
song in our mouths?
Action: If we are listening more attentively and desiring
to obey like the prophets and disciples did, what will we
do? Is God calling us to volunteer our time and talents
for the good of others? Have we paid attention to
charitable appeals and those who are in need, knowing
that every contribution makes a difference in the
building up of God’s Kingdom? Will we notice the
image of God in others, especially strangers and
enemies, and slow our lives down enough to be present
to them in new ways?
Jesus showed us that obedience to God was not
meant to be rote and mechanical, but should come from
a contrite heart and a willing spirit. Like Samuel, we
must learn an important phrase to open the door to our
heart for God and really mean it:
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” Teresa S. Redder, OFS
