As a new year begins it’s a great opportunity to
reflect back on 2014 and all the year’s events, such
as the Winter Carnival, community yard sale, pancake
breakfast, family and pre-teen dances. Numerous
North Haven residents volunteered their time and
energy to make these events possible. Also to be
noticed are all the citizens that were involved in
programs such as snow shoveling, McKnight Soccer,
Scouts, Guides and our community ice rink. Thank you
to all of these generous people who have helped to
make North Haven the fantastic community it is today.
The NHCA would like to wish everyone a happy and
healthy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in
2015.

Snow Shoveling
Program
Needs A Volunteer
Organizer
Student shovelers are matched with a customer that
lives nearby and paid every month to ensure snow is
shoveled for their customer. The customer pays North
Haven Community Association a pre determined
amount to have the student shovel for them every time
it snows. Students are paid every cent the customer pays
for service. Depending on the size of the property, the
student earns no less than $60 per month. North Haven
pays the money back to the student at the beginning
of the following month. This year we have shovelers
ranging in age from 10 to 19. Customers vary from
senior, mobility challenged, snow birds, and “don’t like
to shovel”. We try to accommodate people looking for
help while they are on vacation for short term contracts
if there are students available.
I cannot continue as volunteer organizer for this
program after this year. Most customers are seniors who
have come to rely on such a great community project. I
am willing to offer assistance to a person or group who
will consider taking over as organizer for the program
next year. Families with children in grade 5 or higher
would be a perfect fit for this. It’s time to pass the torch
to the up and coming in our community. The kids have
an opportunity to earn some money, get outdoors in our
winter months, and help another community member.
Customers have the peace of mind knowing someone
will shovel. Everyone gets to know their neighbors.

The New Year is here. Here are some neat snack ideas for those
New Years or leftover holiday parties you may be attending.
Hello Dollies
¼ cup butter or margarine melted in a 9x9 or 9x12 pan
1 cup fine graham cracker crumbs
1 cup desiccated or flaked coconut
1 cup chocolate or butterscotch chips
1 cup chopped nuts
1 can Eagle brand condensed milk
Arrange ingredients in layers over the melted butter in the
order noted above and without stirring. Bake at 325ºF for
30 minutes. Loosen edge. Cool in the pan. Cut into one inch
squares.
CULINARY FILE: new year snacks
Cauliflower Buffalo “Wings”
8
1 medium head cauliflower, chopped into bite-size pieces
1/2 cup garbanzo bean flour
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon melted butter or ghee
2/3 cup hot sauce
Preheat oven to 450ºF. In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour,
water, garlic powder and salt. Whisk together until smooth.
Toss cauliflower into garbanzo batter, making sure to coat
each piece completely, then place battered cauliflower on a
lightly greased, non-stick baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes,
tossing halfway through.
In the meantime, combine melted butter and hot sauce in
a large bowl, regularly stirring. When cauliflower is done,
remove it from the oven and gently toss it in the hot sauce
mixture. Place cauliflower back on the baking sheet and cook
for an additional 25 minutes until it becomes crispy. Allow
cauliflower to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!

Pancakes
On a chilly winter day, pancakes are the perfect
comfort food for any meal. As a child we would
make these every Saturday and they continue to be
a family favourite in our house.
Ingredients
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
1 1/3 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. sugar
1//2 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/3 cups milk
3 tbsp. melted butter
Directions
Mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt together
and set aside. In a separate bowl Beat egg, add milk
and melted butter. Make a well in the centre of the
flour mixture and add the egg mixture stirring until
well mixed. Cook pancakes on the first side until air
bubbles begin to burst on top, flip pancakes and
cook until nicely golden brown.
If you have a favourite recipe, one you would be
willing to share that is, please pass it along. We
are always looking for new recipes. Please email

Sledding Safety
Alberta Health Services, EMS would like to remind parents and children of some basic sledding safety tips as
the winter season continues. Sledding injuries can result
from collisions with stationary objects such as trees and
rocks or with other people on the hill. Unprotected falls
can result in injury if you lose control at high speeds. Everyone is at risk – especially children. Educate your family how to stay safe by following these simple reminders
and have a fun day on the toboggan hill.
Equipment
•Ensure your sled is in good condition. Do not use sleds
with broken parts, sharp edges, or splits in the material.
•Currently, there are no helmets designed specifically
for sledding. However children should wear a properly
fitted helmet designed for high impact collisions, such
as hockey, cycling, or climbing helmets.
Plan ahead
•Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes.
•Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to
exchange wet garments for dry ones.
•Take breaks to warm up out of the cold.
•Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin.
•Even when properly protected from the elements, the
finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other
high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek
bones can be affected by frostbite.
•If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the
individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm
the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it or
by placing the affected part in warm water (not hot;
~41°C max.) until re-warmed.
Hazards
•Avoid hills that are too steep, or too icy – you can lose
control very quickly.
•Choose hills free of obstacles such as trees, rocks, utility poles, or fences.
•Be mindful of clothing that contains drawstrings, or
loose clothing, such as scarves, which can present a
choking hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Kindergarten: where your child’s talents are treasured
Kindergarten is the start of an exciting adventure full of
promise for children and their families. We understand
that children bring their own unique talents and gifts to
their learning experience, which is why we personalize
students’ learning to help them reach their full potential.
In the early years, personalized attention can make a
meaningful difference in children’s lives.
From the very first day of kindergarten, our teachers begin looking into the future to help children take those
next steps in their learning. We never lose sight of our
ultimate goal, which is for every student to complete
high school with a foundation of learning necessary to
thrive in life, work and continued learning.
For those children who don’t attend a preschool program, kindergarten will be their first introduction to
school. This first year will be filled with significant early
experiences they will remember for a lifetime.
We are proud to be a part of creating those memories.
We are proud to provide learning as unique as every student. Come learn with us!
Three Million Lakes
Canada has a lot of great things in
abundance, like hockey players, parkas and
Tim Hortons franchises. But did you know
we also have more lake area than any other
country in the world? It’s true. The Great
White North has 563 lakes larger than 100
square kilometres. The Great Lakes alone
contain about 18 per cent of the world’s
fresh lake water. That’s a lot of water. Makes
you wonder if all of our country’s allies are
actually just thirsty.

site or empty lot. The property owner is ultimately responsible
for snow clearing under the bylaw. For any ice that is difficult
to remove, a de-icing mixture is available at fire halls or Roads
depots. Please bring your own container.
Remember that snow from private property cannot be put
onto the road or boulevard. Large mounds of snow in the
street can impede the flow of traffic, limit driver and pedestrian
visibility and hinder Blue Cart and Black Bin collection.
Be a good neighbour,
clear the snow
Winter has arrived and it’s time to be mindful of how the
buildup of ice and snow on city sidewalks can post a risk of
injury to Calgarians. Older adults, those with mobility issues
or parents pushing strollers or walking with young children,
may find it treacherous to venture out if neighbours are not
diligent about clearing the ice and snow. All of us can help
make walking in our communities safe for everyone if we work
together and follow the regulations set out in Calgary’s Street
Bylaw.
Sidewalks also need to be clear of obstructions such as
electrical cords. When plugging in your vehicle, make sure you
don’t place an electrical cord on or over any portion of a street.
Property owners are responsible for clearing all sidewalks
adjacent to their property. This means removing all snow
and ice down to the bare concrete within 24 hours after the
snow stops falling. If, as a property owner, you do not live at
the residence, it is important to work with tenants or arrange
for a contractor to clear the snow. It’s also important to note
that if a property is being developed, the developer is often the
owner responsible to clean sidewalks around a construction
Let’s remember that snow, ice and obstructions on our
sidewalks can result in serious injuries and can cause those with
limited mobility to be confined indoors. Be a good neighbour
and clear the snow.

Have you considered being a Snow Angel? It can be a challenge
for some residents to shovel and clear their sidewalks. The Snow
Angel campaign encourages citizens to be good neighbours
by helping older adults and others in need with their snow
removal. All you have to do is adopt someone’s sidewalk this
winter and keep it clear.
To find out more about snow and ice removal in Calgary visit

Improving access to seniors and emergency care
I hope everyone had a happy and restful holiday season.
As we begin the 2015 New Year, Alberta’s senior population continues grow and as a result so does the demand
for more continuing care spaces. As your representative
in the Alberta legislature, I understand and acknowledge the growing demand for senior accommodation
options which will meet their specific needs.
The Alberta government also acknowledges these demands and as a result is moving to ease pressure on
hospitals by addressing the needs of more than 700
hundred seniors who are currently waiting in acute care.
This will be accomplished by opening 464 (194 in Calgary) continuing care spaces over the next 12 months.
These spaces are currently underfunded or unstaffed
and through the reallocation of existing funds they will
be brought online.
The Alberta government also plans to assist any remaining patients waiting in acute care through an investment of $60 million to create an additional 300
long term care spaces, and recently put out requests
for proposals to build and additional 1,500 continuing
care spaces, in addition to the 1,400 that are slated to be
opened between now and 2018.
As a result of this increased capacity in long term and
continuing care, Alberta Health Services will allocate
20% of beds freed up in acute care for exclusive emergency department use.
