Impressions have been Little’s stock and trade since his school days in Ottawa, Canada. “I would answer teachers’ questions in their own voices,” said Little, from his home in Las Vegas. “Pretty soon, they stopped asking me questions!” That was 60 years ago. Today, crowds still flock to see the man who claims a repertoire of over 200 voices. But if you can’t make it to a show, Little’s talents are evident on the Emmy Award winning “Rich Little’s Christmas Carol,” originally released on video in the late ‘70s and re-released on DVD in 2007. “I played all the characters in the Dickens’ classic,” said Little. “For instance, I play Scrooge as W. C. Fields, Bob Cratchit as Paul Lynde, and Jacob Marley as Richard Nixon!” Unlike ordinary comedians, Little says impressionists have double-duty on stage. Comedian and impressionist Rich Little is still making the rounds, stage to stage and city to city, at age 76. Although he is still the man of 200 voices, he says Hillary Clinton and some of today’s younger personalities are more difficult for him to impersonate. “You’ve got to do a convincing impression and also tell jokes in that character,” he explained. “It’s really all about concentration when you do impressions, and becoming the person. Sometimes when I really get into Johnny Carson, I’ll come off stage and find myself writing out an alimony check!” While Little’s performances focus mostly on deceased actors, celebrities, and politicians such as John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Ronald Reagan, he also tackles more contemporary personalities. “You have to keep it topical,” he said. “I don’t know what the future holds for me, but if Hillary becomes presi- dent, I may be in big trouble!” Although Little does some female impressions, such as Dr. Ruth, Carol Channing, and Jean Stapleton, he says Mrs. Clinton is tough to mimic. “She needs to develop a lisp or a rasp or twitch to make her a little more distinctive.” While he does a convincing Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Willie Nelson, George Bush and Bill Clinton, impersonating today’s younger stars is challenging due to their lack of distinguishing voices and body language. “So many of the stars of the silver-screen era had distinctive voices, walks, hand gestures, and facial mannerisms,” noted Little. “But how do you do Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, or Leonardo Dicaprio? Their voices just aren’t that distinctive. Even Robert Redford is near impossible to do.” In additional to his vocal talents, Little also draws sketches of celebrities. “I’ve dabbled in art all my life, charcoal portraits mostly,” he said. “I’ve done hundreds of sketches over the years. I guess I have these people in my head and I can put that down on paper as well as voice. I’ve also done people other than the ones I imitate, like Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise. I did a pretty good portrait of Tom, but it wasn’t easy because he kept bouncing up and down on the sofa!” Despite the strain impressionists place on their vocal chords, Little says his voice has held up well over the years. He has never taken voice lessons or studied the science of speech, relying on natural talent and hard work. “I just listen over and over again to a new voice and practice until I get it right.” And no, his voice is not insured. “I once contacted Lloyd’s of London, but they wanted something like $50,000 a year to insure my voice,” said Little. So has Rich ever been tempted to use his talents to mimic a celebrity for personal gain? Well, sort of, he says. “Years ago when I was starting out, I ordered room service as Gary Grant – and found he got much faster service than Rich Little usually did. When the food arrived and they asked for Mr. Grant, I just took the food and said he was in the shower.” Of course, not all his impressions commanded the same respect. “I once ordered a cheeseburger as Richard Nixon,” he recalled. “I’m still waiting for it.” Little’s web site: www. richlittle.com NICK THOMAS teaches at Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., and has written features, columns, and interviews for over 450 magazines and newspapers. Milestones Area on Aging CEO retires The Board of Milestones Area Agency on Aging (MAAA) announces the retirement of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Connie Holland and has announced the appointment of Christa Merritt (currently MAAA Chief Operating Officer) to the CEO position. Merritt has held executive management positions with Milestones/Generations AAA in the Davenport office for the past 6 years and becomes CEO effective January 16, 2015. Holland became CEO of Seneca AAA, Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1997. Her experience and leadership were instrumental during the successful consolidation of three Area Agencies on Aging in July 2013 as mandated by the Iowa legislature. Holland along with Merritt brought the three AAAs together, combining service areas, processes and systems without disruption of consumer services. Milestones covers 17 counties in Iowa: Appanoose, Clinton, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Wayne providing aging and disability information and assistance. Milestones employs 200 fulltime and part-time personnel, manages 60 congregate meal sites and provides services to 7,000 consumers. Retirement plans for Holland have been in the works for awhile and she looks forward to spending time with her recently-retired husband, making plans for her daughter’s wedding and taking time to enjoy her hobbies and interests. Judging from the amount of feedback I received, both positive and negative, these are the most popular Empty Nest columns for 2014. “Happiness” was my runaway best column for 2014. I received more emails and phone calls for this column than any of the others combined — and all the comments were positive. I usually manage to hack someone off, but not on this one. In “Happiness,” I quote from my daily meditation book that you can’t search for happiness, “happiness is a byproduct of right living.” So important is this concept, that my meditation book repeats it four times throughout the year. One very important concept that I didn’t have room for in the “Happiness” column is the “one-day-at-atime” concept. I firmly believe in this, and so do others, as it is preached far and wide by many disciplines. In a world of worry, all we have to do is take care of what is in front of us today, and the tomorrows work out. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn’t here, all we have is today. Enjoy. It’s a gift. In my early days of sobriety, when my brain was racing like the Newton Speedway EMPTY NEST on a hot day (and just as noisy, too), I condensed one day at a time down to one minute at a time. Then I worked up to one hour at a time, one event at a time, and so on. I still practice one-day-atat-time today, maybe more so than ever. Curt Swarm There’s one more thing I would like to add to the column on happiness, and that is “God won’t give us more than we can handle in any given day.” If I’ve offended anyone by my mention of God, I don’t apologize. “Low and behold.” I wrote a column championing the advantages of a Liberal Arts education, and criticiz- ing technically educated people who have poor grammatical and communication skills. In my haste to make a point, I spelled “Low and behold” wrong. Well, you would have thought I had committed the most egregious error. People I’ve never heard from before jumped all over it, gleefully pointing out that the term is spelled “lo and behold.” Geesh. I’m sorry! You might know, as soon as I’m critical of other peoples’ errors, I make one myself. I need to point out that my editor missed the spelling error, as well as the editors of the newspapers. I just wish that all these people I hear from when I make a mistake, would let me know when I write something they like. But that would be the perfect world. “Race Relations in America.” Following the fatal shooting of a black man in Ferguson, Missouri, and a number of similar shootings around the country, I wrote a searing indictment of race relations in America. I received both high praise and glowering ridicule for my opinionated piece, in equal proportions, somewhat representative of feelings in the United States, in general. I don’t usually write hardcore opinions, sticking to human interest, which is the genre of Empty Nest. However, once-in-awhile, following major events, I can’t contain myself. I do have an opinion and like to express it. Being a natural born people pleaser, it used to bother me if I made someone angry with my writing. However, as I age, I’m finding my skin has grown thicker. I now find it sort of complimentary if people take the time to express that they disagree with me. It indicates that my column is being read and stimulating thought. To these people, I usually reply, “Please submit to the newspaper.” I have yet to see it happen. May your 2015 be niffteen. A chiseled hand on an old gravestone points upward. “Gone to a better place.” The cemetery is sited on a hillside above a meandering creek. Long ago laughing children leaped from rock to rock in pursuit of elusive minnows and roamed through nearby woods. Echoes of their laughter soon faded into silence. They lived out their lives and were brought back here to be buried by their own children. “Gone to a better place.” Heavenly wisdom or meaningless words? Can we pause in our madcap pace of leaping place to place in pursuit of John Burns’ metaphorical hand points upward on his tombstone lost his brother and sister to a frontier fever. His parents buried those children and moved onward, downriver by flatboat to a “far better place.” earthly goals to listen? Our ancestors knew hardship and heartache. And yet they persevered for heavenly rewards unseen and unknown — known only to a Creator who endowed them (and us) with unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Life? His parents buried those children and moved onward, downriver by flatboat to a “far better place.” For them. We each seek out our own better place. Liberty? We enter governmental bands and bonds to secure the common good but must fight to preserve our individual liberty. Then and now. As we enter a new year, let us simply resolve to do better — as a person, as a family, as a nation. Yes, gone to a better place. But we get there by being kind, considerate, and courageous in the here and now. Our ancestors’ revolution for liberty allows us to have a resolution to do better. May we so resolve. JAMES F.
