Topic: Paul Broca, Neuroscientist, Neurosurgeon, Anthropologist , Explorer of the mind/ brain
Paul Broca, born in 1824, was an accomplished physician, intrigued with the anatomy of the brain, who discovered
the speech center of the brain, now known as Broca's area. This discovery revolutionized the understanding of
language processing, speech production and comprehension, and the effects of damage to this area.
He also pursued an interest in anthropology and in 1958 founded the Society of Anthropology in Paris. He developed
numerous ways to analyze the form, structure and topography of the brain and skull to identify and differentiate
human races, developing new measuring instruments and numerical indices.
