EMORY–CHILDREN’S CENTER DIVISION OF PEDIATRIC PULMONARY, ALLERGY/IMMUNOLOGY, CYSTIC FIBROSIS AND SLEEP Providing comprehensive services for pediatric patients with a range of conditions, the Emory-Children’s Center Division of Pediatric Pulmonary, Allergy/Immunology, Cystic Fibrosis and Sleep is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, social workers and clinical research coordinators. Pulmonary medicine The Emory-Children’s Center Pulmonary Clinic provides comprehensive services and therapies to children with respiratory system disorders. We offer diagnostic testing and treatment for many conditions, including: −Asthma −Chest pain −Chronic cough −Congenital abnormalities of the respiratory tract −Stridor and noisy breathing −Pulmonary hypertension −Recurrent pneumonia −Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis −Interstitial lung disease −Chronic respiratory failure and ventilator dependence −Recurrent and persistent wheezing −Bronchopulmonary dysphasia and chronic lung disease related to neonatal conditions −Respiratory dysfunction secondary to chronic neurologic, orthopaedic, gastrointestinal conditions and defects We offer diagnostic testing to evaluate allergies to environmental allergens, foods, insect venoms and drugs. We also perform feeding challenges and patch testing to diagnose food allergies and test reactions to a variety of medications including penicillin. We offer allergy injections and can perform drug desensitization for certain medications. At our clinic, we evaluate immune function through diagnostic tests. When necessary, our infusion center can administer intravenous gammaglobulin. Cystic fibrosis The Emory-Children’s Center Cystic Fibrosis Program is part of the Emory Cystic Fibrosis Center and is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We provide care to patients from birth to age of 21 with cystic fibrosis and related conditions. We also offer diagnostic evaluations of children with suspected cystic fibrosis. Our staff works with the Emory Cystic Fibrosis Adult Program to assist with the transition to adult care. Services include: Interdisciplinary care by physicians specializing in pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology and endocrinology—working closely with nurses, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, social workers and respiratory therapists −All appropriate diagnostic testing −Shortness of breath at rest or with exercise −Coordination of sweat testing, genetic evaluation and counseling for patients and family members We also feature onsite pulmonary function testing, including: −Exercise challenge −NIOX testing −Newborn screening and follow-up services −Inhalant medication and respiratory therapy review −Plethysmography −Dedicated clinics for patients with B. cepacia and with cystic fibrosis-related diabetes −Six-minute walk −Participation in clinical trials of new therapies −i-STAT testing −Spirometry −Lung volume testing −Stress test Sleep disorders −Methacholine challenge Allergy and immunology −Snoring/obstructive sleep apnea The Emory-Children’s Center Allergy and Immunology Clinic offers the most current diagnostic treatments for children with a wide range of allergies and immunodeficiency disorders, including: −Allergic rhinitis −Chronic and recurrent sinusitis −Atopic dermatitis −Seasonal asthma −Food and drug allergies −Urticaria −Primary immune deficiencies The Emory-Children’s Center Sleep Clinic treats infants and children from birth to age 21 with sleep-related difficulties. Common symptoms we evaluate and treat include: −Excessive daytime sleepiness/narcolepsy/idiopathic hypersomnia −Insomnia/bedtime resistance/nighttime awakenings −Sleepwalking −Sleep terrors −Restless leg syndrome −Periodic limb movement disorder We arrange, coordinate and interpret sleep studies. Children who need continuous positive airway pressure/bi-level positive airway pressure (CPAP or BPAP) are first seen in a clinic for a mask fitting and desensitization to prepare them for their CPAP or BPAP titration (time permitting). Their compliance on these machines is followed over time to ensure adequate treatment. Apnea The Emory-Children’s Center Infant Apnea Clinic specializes in treating infants with apnea or bradycardia problems, as well as infants whose siblings have died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The clinic focuses on infants who have been placed on home cardiorespiratory monitors. In addition, clinic specialists evaluate infants to determine if home monitoring is the proper approach for the patient.
