INTEGRATED CHILDREN’S CENTRES: The City of Greater Geelong has expressed its commitment to the development of ‘integrated service delivery’ for children within its Municipal Early Years Plan 2013-2017: A Place for Us. The Plan highlights the importance of integrated service delivery for improving outcomes for young children and their families through professional and services ‘working together’ to promote more efficient, accessible and responsive service delivery for families with young children. Similarly, the Municipal Children’s Services Infrastructure Plan 2013-2030, outlines the Council’s commitment to the development of integrated early years services within community-based centre, where possible and practicable. The Boorai Centre Ocean Grove opened in January 2014 as the first integrated children’s centre within the City of Greater Geelong. It brings together, within an integrated practice model, a range of education, health, support and community services for children, including education and care (long day care, occasional care and kindergarten services), maternal child health, parenting support, family support, allied health, early intervention and other specialist support services. Four new integrated children’s centres will be opening early in 2015 in Barwon Heads, Grovedale, Norlane and Leopold. ORGANISATION RELATIONSHIP: This position is part of the Community Services Division which comprises the following departments: • • • • • Aged and Disability Services Arts and Culture Community Development Family Services Health and Local Laws Reports To: Directly Manages: Internal Liaisons: External Liaisons: Centre Manager N/A Centre-based staff, other Council Departments Service Users, Local Community and Resource Agencies, Allied Professionals. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Adherence to all Council’s policies and procedures as relevant to this position. • Provision of Meals 2. Plan, prepare and serve a menu of nutritious meals which are appropriate to a variety of age groups. 3. To be responsible for displaying the written menu in accordance with Education and Care Services National Regulations, Education and Care Services National Law Act 2010 and the National Quality Framework on a weekly basis. 4. To be responsible for the implementation of the Food Safety Plan (Food Act 1984) 5. Maintain the Centre kitchen environment and equipment in a safe and hygienic manner in accordance with Health and Safety Regulations, reporting any requirements to the Centre Manager. 6. Advise the Centre Manager of requirements in relation to food stock. 7. Order food stock as required. 8. To keep the Centre Manager adequately and promptly informed of service developments, difficulties and opportunities 9. Maintain standards within the kitchen, that is, in accordance with Education and Care Services National Regulations, Education and Care Services National Law Act 2010 and National Quality Framework • Communication 10. Maintain communication with Centre staff and families in relation to the individual dietary needs of all children 11. Liaise with other centre cooks and resource agencies in relation to sharing ideas, information exchange, nutritional and dietary requirements • Team Building 12. Act as a resource to other staff in sharing of program ideas, support and information exchange. 13. Maintain a co-operative and flexible attitude towards the development of a motivated and professional team. 14. Ensure confidentiality, professionalism and discretion is maintained at all times. 15. Attend staff and/or committee meetings and participate in project teams as required 16. Assist the team by supporting the Centres’ goals and objectives, to promote the growth and development of the children on a daily and long term basis. • Administration 17. Responsible for maintaining all records associated with the Centre’s Food Safety Plan. 18. Carry out other duties as deemed reasonable and appropriate to the role as directed from time to time. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA: • Completion of a recognised Food Handlers Course and Food Safety Supervisor Course is essential. • Ability to cook nutritionally balanced and age appropriate meals for a large number of young children incorporating meals for children with specific dietary requirements. • Abililty to plan and prepare menus including pre ordering and purchasing of food. • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements and Food Safety Legislation. • Ability to identify Health and Safety issues pertaining to the work environment. • Demonstrated ability to show care and responsibility and have no history of neglect, abuse or violence towards children. • All candidates should display integrity, responsibility, respect for others and the ability to be innovative. • Working with Children Check. ACCOUNTABILITY AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY: • In consultation with the Centre Manager, be responsible for the planning and preparation of the centre menu. • Assist in the ordering and purchasing of food. • Responsible for informing the Centre Manager of any service developments, difficulties and opportunities. • Accurately maintain records of purchases and assist the Centre Manager in adhering to the budget adopted. • Accountable for creating and capturing accurate and complete records of the business activities related to this position, in accordance with approved policy and procedures. This is applicable to both hardcopy and electronic information, including email. JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING: • To make recommendations to the Centre Manager on planning and purchasing of food. • To bring to the attention of the Centre Manager any Health and Safety or operational issues pertaining to their work environment. SPECIALIST SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: • Ability to cook nutritionally balanced and age appropriate meals for a large number of young children incorporating meals for children with specific dietary requirements • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements and Food Safety Legislation MANAGEMENT SKILLS: • Ability to plan and efficiently organise time and prioritise tasks. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: • Ability to demonstrate Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Respect in all aspects of the position. • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and self motivation • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and cooperation within the program • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication and customer relations QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: • Knowledge of pre-school children’s nutritional requirements and food safety is essential. • Demonstrated ability to show care, responsibility and no history of neglect, abuse and violence to children. • Practical experience in cooking for children. • Current Victorian Driver’s Licence essential. • Completion of a recognised Food Handlers Course is essential. • Completion of a recognised Food Safety Supervisor Course is essential. • First Aid would be an advantage. SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: • • • A pre-employment medical examination may be required. Participate, where required, in the reporting of health, safety and wellbeing issues.
