We combine innovative programming,
internationally acclaimed performers and
cutting-edge research in a dynamic series
of events at a low cost.
All information is accurate at the time of going to press
but is subject to change.
Icy landscapes and glittering snowfields…
Rugged coastlines with mountains plunging
into the sea…
Summer days with midnight suns giving way to
long dark winters…
The mysterious Northern Lights…
Whilst conjuring up images of breath-taking
natural Nordic beauty I invite you to wrap up
warm for the Nordic themed Spring 2015 Concert Season at the
University of Sheffield.
We launch the season with an opportunity for you to see one of popular
music’s most imaginative and vibrant artists at work. Icelandic singer
Björk appears in Biophilia Live, a dazzling concert film of a
multidimensional – multimedia project that delves into the creative
interactions between music, nature and technology.
150 years ago two giants of Nordic music were born, Carl Nielsen in
Denmark and Jean Sibelius in Finland. The Sacconi Quartet,
recognised for their fresh and imaginative performances, celebrate the
anniversaries of these remarkable composers in an enchanting
programme that includes the atmospheric ‘Intimate Voices’ quartet.
Simon Lepper, one of the most gifted accompanists of his generation
joins forces with fast rising British talent Anna Huntley in a thrilling
programme of song. Norwegian composer Edward Grieg’s rarely
performed ‘Haugtussa’ is a miracle marriage of music and poetry, and is
paired with sublime songs by Frederick Delius.
Elsewhere in the season we invite you to witness some remarkable
harmonica pyrotechnics! The Will Pound Band combine traditional
music with shades of blues, bluegrass and jazz to create a sound that is
both steeped in tradition and progressive in its approach.
The virtuosic Fidelio Trio featuring Director of Performance Mary
Dullea, present two monumental works of the piano trio literature by
Beethoven and Ravel and a UK premiere by Department of Music
composer Dorothy Ker. Also from the Department of Music, Croatian
pianist Inja Davidovic teams up with Dutch natural horn and baroque
horn specialist Erwin Wieringa in a concert brilliantly illustrating the
work of the most influential piano teacher of all time, Carl Czerny.
Finally it’s a tremendous privilege to welcome back to Sheffield world
renowned harpsichordist, conductor, recording artist and pioneer of the
early music revival Trevor Pinnock. In a programme spanning the
baroque and classical, this concert in the company of a musician of the
highest international calibre is one not to be missed.
We look forward to welcoming you to our concerts this spring.
