PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Happy New Year!
First off, let me introduce myself, I’m Amy Hansen. I own a 24’ SeaRay, the ‘Dark Horse’, down at Reefpoint Marina. I grew up fishing inland waters of northern Wisconsin learning from my Mother and Grandmother. Mom was into
walleye, I had a thing for bluegills and perch. Took a pause from fishing while life got in the way, and then a few years ago
I started fishing the ‘Big Pond’ with friends, and was hooked (pardon the pun) ever since. I gun and bow hunt deer when I
can, but turkey hunting is my “thing”.
Well, I think it’s safe to say that, last year uneventful fishing wise, but club wise… it was full of ups and downs, and
plenty of things that were stuck in limbo of being eternally stagnant. My job, now, as President of Salmon Unlimited Wisconsin is to change that.
We all know this club is currently lacking in many areas, and needs a new boost of adrenaline, before it flat lines
and many, many years of passionate dedication from our fore-members comes to an end. I’m coming into this with the
same mindset as a brand new CEO comes into a position into a lackluster company. I have been skimming over years of
meeting minutes, been fully engulfed with the SAR committee, sat in on the first meeting of the new Fishing/Outing committee, talked with the new Membership committee, have been catching up and understanding what our actual status is
with the WIDNR, state, and federal government, and took on the task of giving the ‘Fish On’ its current look.
Since I was nominated in October, I have been fielding calls, texts, Facebook messages, and having conversations
with many current members, old members, and hopefully future members. Everything has been constructive ideas and
comments. I would like to keep that ball rolling, and I would like and encourage anyone that has ideas or issues to feel free
to contact me. For those that do not know, I’m an artist and shoot paint by trade, so if you call and I don’t answer, make
sure to leave a message or a text, saying who you are, etc.. I can’t always get to the phone if I have an airbrush or paint gun
in my hand.
In closing I would like to say, that I understand the challenges ahead of me, and look forward to making this club
bigger and better. It’s been said time and time again, that you cannot ‘run a club’ (or Salmon-a-Rama) on the participation
of a few, and for it to be a true club, we need the participation of the whole to make it all that it could possibly be for the
future. Our fishery, and our participation in the ongoing care of it, is an important asset; not only for our recreation, and
businesses along the lake, but also for the ecological health of the region and Great Lakes as a whole.
Remember, our first General Meeting is 7pm..Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the 5th Street Yacht Club. Our
speaker in January is Captain Arnie Arredondo of the ‘Phoenix’, out of Kenosha. I hope that everyone had a wonderful
holiday, and may your new year bring you full coolers, heavy weigh-ins, and time out on the water with good friends!
Sincerely,
Amy Hansen
Club President

Be a part of Wisconsin’s conservation tradition by becoming an Angler
Education Instructor.
The angler education program is looking for people who enjoy working
with children, like to fish or would like to learn by helping to teach others.
Instructors provide opportunities to learn basic fishing skills, explore Wisconsin’s aquatic resources and develop a set of conservation ethics to help
ensure that Wisconsin’s lakes and streams will remain bountiful for generations to come.
The program provides training workshops to clubs, schools, youth development organizations and service groups. Trained instructors have access to
educational resources and loaner fishing equipment.

2015 RACINE TROUT ICE DERBY
Hey everyone, mark your calendars for January 31st.
Everything is beginning to fall into place for the 7th annual
Racine Trout Ice Derby sponsored by Salmon Unlimited
Wisconsin.
The extended weather forecast over the next few weeks if
favorable for making ice. We expect the harbor ice to begin
locking up tight.
No need to catch a fish in this derby to cash in on the above
mentioned and many, many more great prizes offered in the
contestant’s prize pool raffle.
Each entry ticket into the ice derby includes one raffle ticket
into the contestant’s prize pool raffle. The Grand Prize
(Jiffy PRO4 Ice Drill Package) will be the first prize drawn and the lucky winner of this prize need not be present to win.
For the remaining prizes mentioned above, contestants must be present to win. This means that if for any reason, you step
away during the raffle and your number is drawn, you’re simply out of luck. To avoid the possibility of this happening to
you, simply hand your ticket to one of your buddies listening to the numbers being drawn until you can return to the raffle.
Would you like to increase your odds of winning one or more of these great prizes? Again this year we’re offering each
contestant the option to purchase one additional raffle ticket at a cost of $10 dollars each. This was very successful last year
as we collected $1,750 dollars in which 100% was used to enhance this year’s contestant’s prize pool.
Again this year the largest fish caught using an Automatic Fisherman will win $500.
Also new this year is the expanded prize structure of the NORTHERN PIKE division. This year we went from paying three
(3) places to five (5).
Biggest Pike places will pay (1st $250 cash, 2nd $200 cash, 3rd $150 cash, 4TH $100 cash and 5th $50 cash).
This is in addition to the Brown and Rainbow Trout divisions which pay a cash prize percentage to five places in each category based on the number of entrants into the derby.
Reefpoint Brew House will be serving Bloody Marys along with Baileys Hot Chocolate and Hot Cider Rum outside the
breezeway at 8:00 am. There’s also a “build your own chili bar” and be sure to ask them about their derby day food specials
as well!!!!
In conjunction with the ice fishing derby, Salmon Unlimited of WI is selling Class “A” Raffle Tickets on site. Tickets are 3
for $10. This raffle pays out 5 places; 1st Place of $500, 2nd $400, 3rd $300, 4th $200 and 5th Place pays $100. Drawing will
be held the day of the derby in the bar area of the Reefpoint Brew House.
And for all the spectators and those who wake up too late for prime time fishing, you don’t need to fish to win in this
derby. Just purchase a Derby Entry Ticket and you’re automatically entered into the contestant’s prize pool raffle. Ticket
sales end at 10:00 AM sharp on the day of derby.
Derby Rules along with a complete list of derby sponsors can be found by clicking the Ice Derby link on the Salmon
WWUnlimited web page. We hope to see you on the ice. Until then,
Happy New Year and take care,
Khris Radke

SALMON-a-RAMA REPORT
Salmon-A-Rama has been making some big changes to try and
ensure that our 2015 event is the biggest and the best we have
had to date.
This year we have made some big changes to the prize structure.
Our guaranteed structure is:
$20,000 Grand Prize
$2,000 First Place per species in Off-Shore division
$1,500 First Place On-Shore
$1,000 Guaranteed for the Slam
$1,000 Guaranteed for the Super Slam.
This year we have recognized the importance of advertising our event to a larger audience, and are promoting
the festivities we have at the grounds throughout the entire 9 days.
Following this plan, we have decided to represent (SAR) along with Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin at two well
known Sport Shows.
The first will be January 8-11, 2015 at the Sportsmen’s Show in St. Paul, MN. The second show will be the
Ultimate Sports Show on March 19-22, 2015 in Grand Rapids, MI.
This will help us support our second big announcement this year. The addition of two new weigh in ports. This
year we are pleased to officially welcome Captain Chucks of Ludington, MI as a SAR weigh in site. The second
port to join is Howie’s Tackle shop in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Howie’s Tackle should really help us capitalize on that
area, and having a weigh-in close enough for more contestants in that area to compete.
The SAR magazine has also been moving forward and looks to be bigger and better than ever, and will hopefully
have some great tips and information on the coming event.
There will be several changes made to the Charter Ticket this year, so watch the rules that will be coming out
soon as this will now be the best available option for all the Charter Captains out there to benefit from.
There will be more to come in the near future on tournament sponsors, rules, and activities so stay tuned.
This year looks to be moving at a fast pace in a positive direction.

Jim LaFortune

MEMBER BUSINESS of the MONTH: FIRE FLIES LLC
Happy New Year from Fire Flies!
My name is Patrick Schmutzer and I am the owner of
Fire Flies, LLC and I am honored to be chosen as the first of
new articles from business owners here in the Salmon
Unlimited Wisconsin FISH ON!
Fire Flies has a close connection to Salmon
Unlimited and Salmon-A-Rama. Besides being a member
(and board member) of S.U., the business actually started the
test launch of our products at the 2013 Salmon-A-Rama. In
2014 we were a major sponsor of Salmon-A-Rama and we will be
back for 2015!
Fire Flies offers many different flies for the great lakes, first we offer an exclusive Coho line of flies. The Coho flies
actually have caught all 5 species of Salmon and Trout all season. Our Coho line is not a peanut fly, they are a medium
length fly that is tied to give it a fuller profile. With the fly not attached to the hook, when the fish is netted you can slide
the fly body out of the way and work directly on the fish. This leads to a long fly life because the Coho are not chewing and
trashing with the fly in their mouth. Also you will notice we have a small Spin-N-Glow on the front of all the Coho flies,
this is another attractant on the fly. Some of the patterns are integrated with UV components, be it the Spin-N-Glow and/or
the beads. We do have the top selling and top producing Coho fly on lake Michigan and it is the “Limited Out” fly, and it is
followed closely by “The joker”. Over all we have 4 flies in this line and we will be adding 1 more right away with a couple
more to possibly added after early testing. If you are looking for a fly that will produce great result all season then you need
to see the Coho line.
Secondly we have our King Flies; these are the traditional 4 inch flies that are reverse tied for a bushier profile. In
our complete setup our king flies are made with quality in mind, we use Blood Run 40lb Fluorocarbon leader and premium
VMC hooks. We wanted to make a fly that was ready to fish right out of the package! Last season our top seller and top
producer was “Kermit’s Revenge UV”, this has made its name taking big kings all season long. Combined with our UV fly
material and our exclusive Fire Flies UV beads this fly is unstoppable. Once you place any of our flies with UV material in
the water you will see the difference, the material completely changes the fly! We have a total of 12 Flies currently in the
King line (6 of these are UV based) with 4 more being added for 2015. If you want to get a quality made fly with industry
leading catch results then you need to see our King flies.
If you caught this in the above paragraph I talked about exclusive Fire Flies UV beads. We had an exclusive Faceted
Green UV bead created just for Fire Flies. This bead is a faceted green bead that under water just lights up! We utilize these
beads in most of our UV flies, and have tested these side by side with the same flies and non UV beads; the fly with the UV
beads consistently out preformed the same fly with Non UV beads. During the 2014 season there was such a demand for
our UV beads that we have offered these for sale.
At Fire Flies our philosophy is to make products that work, and they only way to know this is by doing extensive all year
long. I have a very good Pro Staff that is constantly helping with research and development; if we don’t think a product is
ready for the market we don’t launch it. We value you the customer and we do not want to waste your time or your money with a sub-par product.
For 2015 we will be catching limits and creating memories,
we will be testing new products that you have not seen on the
market, and most of all we will be here for you the customer!
Thank you!
Patrick Schmutzer and the Fire Flies Family

Scholarships-They are here and looking for other people to score.
Membership-New Member is Jeff and Susan Genac from Racine WI. The Boat name is Mr Safety it is 19’ Bostan Whaler
Federation-John Hansen spoke He stated there is still a lot of discussion about on the Commercial Fishery (Dan’s Fish
Case) out of Sturgeon Bay the illegally purchased fish, 44,500 were supposedly illegally purchased. This is a Federal case
and there is little information to be obtained, but Chris Groth the DNR Supervisor out of Green Bay helped run a lot of the
investigation. He stated that there may not be a big fine out of this, but hopefully this will scare straight some of the illegal
goings on with the Fish Industry. The Federation Unanimously passed a motion to go back to a 3 Lake Trout limit to mirror what Michigan is doing in their State. The Fed’s have been planting between 2.6 and 3 million Lake Trout a year for the
last 15 years. The bag limit per day has been down to 2 for about 30 year span.
There is a lot of work being done by several organizations to permanently separate Lake Michigan and Mississippi River
basins. Last year the 2 groups jointly commented on the first draft of alternatives for construction of devices to complete
the separation.

than what we have in the past. He spoke about putting monies from the CD’s into the checking account. There was a motion to approve by Bob and 2nd by Jeff. And all were in Favor
SAR-Jim spoke on what we approved at the emergency board meeting. Al asked some questions as to what was done at
that meeting and where the proposed funds would be directed at. We really need to take a look at what it realistically takes
to run the club. There was a lot of discussion on the tournament, and it was decided to save this discussion for the SAR
meeting. Just a reminder that the next meeting for SAR on the 22nd of December at Uptown Bar and Grill.
Fishing Committee- they will meet and have more info at the next meeting.
Membership-We will need to use a different address for the renewals. 2 new members in December (we will let them just
go through the year and bring it up for the 1 year so it will renew in January in 2016.) Pat had an idea for renewal opportunities to give them a onetime offer to come back at the regular renewal rate and not having to repay the additional initiation fee. The board feels that this would benefit the club. It was brought up that people have stated at Reef Point that they
would join in order to get the discount. If she has any questions it should be run through the Membership Chair.
Federation-Chuck gave a report to Shane and he gave it Amy.
Vet’s Outing-once they get the Club dates together Shane will organize it.
Kids Clinic-We need new Rods and Reels. RJ made a motion for $500 to get what we need for the kids clinic. Danny 2nd

approved we would like to do this next year for Biggest Fish.
Old Business-Back in October we spoke about Membership packets. They get their membership card- By Laws and Constitution- 2013 Booklet and Stickers. Bob brought up the fact that all board and officers vote with the exception of the one
running the meeting. He would be the tie breaker. The nets pens were brought up Angie is moving forward and soon as
dimensions approved he will contact Gateway.
Chris brought up that it was brought up and approved and Chris would like some help with going through the information and get the ball rolling. There was discussion that even though Craig is trained in certain arenas. We still need to talk
to the people at reef point and how many of their employees also need to be trained and if we will help defray some of the
costs of their training.
Steve brought up taking the Boy Scouts out for a fishing trip the first weekend in June. There would be 15 kids and 5
adults.
New Business-Greg brought up that we need to truly get back to Roberts Rule of Order and have the committee lead come
to board with information. As Amy stated we need actually committee’s and not a committee of one.
There was a motion to adjourn by Jeff and 2nd Trad All were in Favor
