The past year brought about several staffing changes with the retirements of three long-term employees. Annie Armstrong joined the SMCE staff as a Nutrition Site Manager in 2001 and worked at our Romnes and Quaker sites. After 13 years, Annie retired this past fall, but has continued to show her dedication and commitment as a volunteer for our agency. Joan Duerst has spent her entire life committed to social justice and helping others and her work as our Home Chore Program Volunteer Coordinator for the past 6 years demonstrated her passion for making our community a better place. Joan retired from the Coalition in September, but will continue to be a force in the community as she pursues new, meaningful initiatives to make a difference. Sandy Spiece has been a Case Manager at SMCE for the past 6 years and will be retiring at the end of 2014. Sandy has been a dedicated, compassionate advocate for her clients and has worked tirelessly to connect people to vital services and resources. She has had a real impact on many lives in South Madison and will be missed! We wish to express our deepest gratitude for the meaningful contributions these wonderful women have made to SMCE and the older adults we serve, and we wish them the very best as they embark on the next phase of their lives. When one door closes, another opens and so we welcome two new staff members to our agency. Hannah Halverson has joined our staff as a General Case Manager. She has experience working with older adults and in the Mental Health field and is also a proud new mom! Jeanette Arthur is our new Home Chore Program Volunteer Coordinator, and has an extensive background working with community organizations in a variety of roles. She is an Edgewood College graduate and well connected to the community. Please join me in welcoming these new members to our fine staff. If you are feeling isolated because you can’t get out of the house like you used to—or if you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that will coax you out of the house for a chance to socialize with older adults of like interests, the programs below are for you! Each of these programs recruits volunteers who are trained and matched with an adult age 55 or older, who can use some positive support to remain independent. The emphasis is on sharing interests and activities through visits and outings. Volunteers in these programs are not expected to do chores, housework or perform personal care. Each program is slightly different, but all have coordinators to provide continued support and supervision. Catholic Charities Elder Mentor Program 608-833-4800 x 112 catholiccharitiesofmadison.org/ProgramsServices/ValuingSeniors Volunteer Mentors offer friendly visiting, help with errands, reading and small organizing tasks. Independent Living Friendly Visiting Program 608-268-9641 independentlivinginc.org/friendly-visiting Friendly Visitors help older and disabled adults remain independent in their homes, through regular outings or visits in person or by phone. Volunteers can also provide reminders of upcoming appointments. A small annual fee may apply, based on income. Peer Support of Dane County 608-846-9469 x 224 This program connects volunteers to homebound or isolated adults age 55 and older, with special attention to residents of smaller communities around the county. Volunteers may receive additional training, as needed, in how to support peers experiencing grief and loss, separation from family, health changes and other life changes. There are many areas of interest that you could be sharing with a peer. Here are some possibilities to get you thinking: books, board games, cards, cooking, crafts, exercise, gardening, history, music, needlework and sewing, pets, prayer or meditation, puzzles; vintage or antique collecting, window shopping, writing.
