Sunday, Janury 18, 2015 U PASTOR’S PAGE The Liturgical Year – A Rhythm That Makes Our Lives Holy Our year of worship or Liturgical Year began with the 1st Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. The Advent season of preparation for the Lord’s return in glory, as well as the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, came to its conclusion on Christmas day. The Christmas season extended from December 25 through our celebration of the Baptism of the Lord on January 11, 2015. Ordinary Time starts this Sunday, January 18, 2015. Our Liturgical year is built around the great feast of Sunday, the Lord’s day. We cannot speak of Ordinary Time without speaking of Sunday. The every seven-day celebration of the Lord’s Day is the basic structure upon which the church year is built. “Remember, keep holy the Lord’s day. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work….” (Exodus 20. 8) The great liturgical seasons of AdventChristmas and Lent-Easter are more expansive celebrations of particular aspects of the one Passover or Paschal mystery which we celebrate every Lord’s Day; the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “The special seasons focus our attention upon critical dimensions of one mystery, a mystery so overwhelming that we are compelled to separate out its various elements for particular attention. These seasons in no way minimize the critical importance of the Sunday celebration throughout the rest of the year. which comes together, remembering that on the first day of the week the Lord of life was raised up and creation came at last to completion. Sunday as a day of play and worship is a sacrament of redeemed time. How we live Sunday proclaims to the world what we believe about redeemed time now and forever. What happens in our churches every Sunday is the fruit of our week. What happens as the fruit of the week past is the beginning of the week to come. Sunday, like all sacraments, is simultaneously a point of arrival and departure for Christians on their way to the fullness of the Kingdom. This is not ordinary at all. This is the fabric of Christian living.” (Taken from the St. Andrew Bible missal, William J. Hirten Co., Inc., Brooklyn, New York, 1982.) Ordinary Time this year will end with Ash Wednesday on February 18, and the beginning of the 40 day Lenten season of prayer, fasting and works of charity (almsgiving). The high point of our church year is Holy Week, concluding with the Easter Vigil on the night of Saturday, April 4 and the start of the 50 day Easter season of rejoicing in the victory of Christ over sin and death. The birthday of the church, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, completes the Easter season of festivity. Ordinary time resumes and extends until the 1st Sunday in Advent, 2015. Peace, Father Bruce Ordinary time is not very ordinary at all. Ordinary time, the celebration of Sunday, is the identifying mark of the Christian community 2 U St. Kilian Catholic Church Sunday, January 18, 2015 Serving the Parish of St. Kilian Mission Statement The Catholic family of St. Kilian Parish, guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by God’s Word and the Eucharist, building on our Benedictine tradition of welcome, prayer and liturgy, seeks to be a vibrant, faith-filled community, committed to worshiping God, loving God and witnessing God in and through our neighbor. St. Kilian Catholic Church 7 Sunday, January 18, 2015 Counseling Information for Families and Individuals Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: What blessings you bring to our Church when you share your Catholic faith as you Serve God by Serving Others. Your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal touches so many of our neighbors in need, and we are so grateful for your important participation. As we begin the 2015 Appeal, I am reminded of Pope Francis’ call that “amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others.” When we come together to help support these critical ministries, that is what we are doing – we are dispelling that darkness and bringing hope and love to more than 600,000 people every year. You are helping to feed the hungry, provide clothes and emergency support to the needy, strengthen parishes throughout our Diocese, help form our future priests and deacons and provide funding for Catholic Charities’ outstanding programs and services. You are also helping to ensure that our ministries bring Christ’s light to hundreds of thousands of people in hospitals, colleges and even our jails. We hope that you will once again join with me, your Pastor and many of your neighbors by making a gift to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal, and if possible increasing your already generous gift in an effort to help spread the “light of hope” to even more people in need. (516)- 249-0127 Ext. 129 Padre Antonio. “Vengan a ver”.
