WELCOME TO SGS COLLEGE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE
The Cotswolds - a beautiful
corner of England just waiting
for you to discover!
The Cotswolds area is one of England’s
favourite destinations; famous for hundreds of
honey-colour limestone villages in a beautiful
rural setting.
For lovers of the retro and vintage, the Cotswolds is a
delight - full of experiences, inspiration and shops that
you just can’t find anywhere else.
STROUD
Stroud is well known as one of the leading towns for
the Arts and you will have lots of opportunities to get
involved in cultural activities.
With its dramatic Cotswolds landscape, unique arts and
crafts heritage, fabulous festivals and independent shops,
the Stroud District is the one of the least commercialised
and unexplored area in the Cotswolds.
Encircled by five sweeping valleys opening out to the
River Severn and made famous by Laurie Lee’s novel
“Cider with Rosie”, the scenery is dramatic around
Stroud. It is a great meeting place, with direct links to
London and the South, making it a Bohemian/café/gallery/ bookshop sort of place. Jasper Conran described
the town as ‘the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’.
Outstanding by standing out
Situated in the beautiful five
valleys, SGS Stroud is based in a
modern, state-of the-art building
that combines purpose-built
facilities with the latest education
technology, offering interactive
learning for all students.
Set in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds,
Stroud is renowned for the arts, with a wealth
of festivals and events running throughout
the year. The regency town of Cheltenham,
with its internationally renowned festivals,
and the city of Gloucester, with its waterfront
culture, are both nearby.

QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED
Foundation Degree is a University level qualification.
Foundation degrees involve two years of study. It is similar to an HND but the awarding body is
the university. With this qualification you are able to seek employment at the end of your two years,
or you can enter the final year of an honours degree to be awarded the full BA or BSc.
Higher National Diploma
A Higher National Diploma is a work-related course. A HND takes two years to complete and
is generally equivalent to second year of a university. Awarded by BTEC Pearsons (Edexcel), they are
usually worth 240 credits and you can progress to University for a top up to degree qualification.
Higher National Certificate
A full-time HNC takes a year to complete or usually over two years part-time.
Many HNC courses cover the same subjects as an HND, but an HNC is one level below an HND.
HNC’s are available in a wide range of subjects and a great entry point to Higher Education, often
completed alongside employment.
Top Ups
Top ups are the final year of a degree course to give you the full BA or BSc degree. These can be
delivered at University or at Higher Education Colleges. Depending on your HND or Foundation
Degree and the top up you decide on, this could be one year or two years in length. It depends
on how closely your qualification matches up with the top up degree qualification.
Fast track Degrees
Fast track Degrees are usually completed within 2 years. The big advantage is that you get a full
BSc or BA (awarded by a University) in just two years. Fast track courses require dedication as they
run into the summer months and demand a high level of maturity. These courses will save you money
and you achieve the qualification quickly. Ideal, if you are considering a GAP year!

ACCOMMODATION
We understand that it’s important for you to know where you’re going
to live while you’re at college – particularly if you’re an international
students, and not familiar with the local area. Our experienced
accommodation officer can help by arranging your accommodation
before you arrive and offering ongoing support.
We provide an accommodation service for students who need temporary
accommodation while studying at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
Most of our accommodation is situated in pleasant residential areas with easy
access to both SGS Filton and WISE and Bristol city centre. Accommodation is
also available in the Stroud area.
There are three main types of accommodation available:
•
HOMESTAY: international students moving away from home for the first time
often choose the security and home-from-home appeal of a room in a family home. Host family accommodation typically includes breakfast, evening meal
and a couple of loads of washing per week.
• SELF-CATERING IN A FAMILY HOME: students have their own bedroom and
live within a family home but are self-sufficient and cook for themselves.
• Rented accommodation: living independently in a rented/shared house.
Homestay
Cost: approximately £120 per week, including bills.
This is the ideal chance for our international students to learn about British family life,
while practising their English. Living as part of a family, you will have a single room in
a comfortable home. Breakfast and dinner during the week and all meals at weekends
are provided. There may be other students living in the house, but they may not be of
the same nationality. Payment is made direct to the host family, by arrangement.
Self-catering in a family home
Cost: approximately £95 per week, including bills.
If you prefer to do your own cooking and live more independently, this may be your
best option. You’ll have the support of a host family when you need it, but you’ll
usually share a separate kitchen and bathroom with other students. Bills are included,
so budgeting is easy, and you pay your host family directly, by arrangement.
Rented accommodation
Cost: approximately £250-£350 per month,
excluding bills.
If you’re used to living independently, you
may prefer to live in rented accommodation.
You can share a house or flat with other
students (either British or international)
and be responsible for your own cooking,
cleaning and paying the bills.
You can only choose this option if you’re
staying in the UK for at least six months, and
you’ll need to pay a deposit equivalent to
one month’s rent. Please note that while we
can help you find rented accommodation,
we haven’t necessarily inspected all of the
available properties.
We can arrange homestay or self-catering
accommodation for your first month, and
can help you find a house or flat once
you’ve settled in. We can’t arrange rented
accommodation in advance, as you’ll need
to sign a contract with the landlord.
For more information on accommodation
available to SGS students, or to find out more
about hosting an SGS student in your home,
call 0117 909 2297, or email tina.gay@filton.

SCHOOL
OF ART
Bristol Art School is the epitome of ‘small is beautiful’
- from the first week, I seemed to be on first name
terms with almost everybody... the culture of
acknowledging people ...(as opposed to walking
past]) is incredibly hospitable. Partly the teachingeverybody is very committed and enthusiastic
about their field- and also, equally, about teaching
us about it- its really most inspiring - literally
everybody seems to enjoy their own work

What you study:
The degree structure enables you to develop
your work through exploring selected media and
approaches, including: drawing, ceramics, moving
image, painting, photography, printmaking,
sculpture and combinations of these. Drawing
forms the backbone of the course.
Critical reflection and evaluation of different critical
approaches supports the creative and imaginative
processes involved. This requires you to value the
constructive criticism exchanged between staff and
students, and to participate in discussing your own
work and that of your peers. You are expected to
actively engage in seminars, tutorials and lectures
and helped to acquire independent learning skills.
You are encouraged to engage with what it means
to practise as an artist today on your own defined
terms, to place your work in relation to both historic
and contemporary art and broader contexts in
society, community and culture. You will investigate
a range of personal, social, community and commercial contexts to do this.
Professionalism underpins the degree, which
culminates in an off-site exhibition and a
small-scale work-related research project.
You are expected to be proactive in achieving
these objectives.
The School has developed professional relationships with other organisations. Local Museum in the
Park, for example, hosts various college exhibitions
and the Art School reciprocates with an annual
professional fundraising event for the museum’s
Walled Garden Project, which students can take
part in. The current academic team has a particular
interest in Artist’s Books. The college Glass Box
Gallery provides a first step to exhibiting off-site.
What makes this course special is a dedicated team
of experienced tutors and technicians who place a
strong emphasis on student-centred learning, and
a questioning, critical and outward facing approach
to what making art might be the 21st century.

ILM is Europe’s leading awarding
body for leadership and management qualifications. More people
in the UK gain leadership and
management qualifications with
ILM than from any other awarding
body – in fact, they award more
qualifications in leadership
and management than all the
others in the UK combined.
ILM qualifications bring about
practical benefits to you and your
organisation because they focus
on improvement – improvement
of leaders and managers in their
roles, improvement in the teams
they lead and in the products
and services they provide, and
improvements in your organisation
and the way it operates.
Level 3 Award in Leadership
and Management:
This qualification is ideal if you have management
responsibilities but no formal training, and are
serious about developing your abilities. It’s
particularly suited to practising team leaders seeking to move up to the next level of management

ILM Courses at South Gloucestershire and
Stroud College 2013/2014
The unitised structure of ILM qualifications
is designed to make it easier for learners to
continue with their development by progressing
onto additional qualifications.
There are four main pathways of progression for
the successful candidate to consider.
1. Deepen your learning by moving to a larger
qualification at the same level. Build on your
award to gain a certificate, or your certificate
to gain a diploma.
2. Extend your learning by gaining a qualification
in a different aspect of your role
3. Develop your career by moving up to a
higher level qualification to prepare yourself
for promotion
4. Build on your credit by transferring it to another
ILM qualification.
For those looking to ‘top up’ their current Level 5
Certificate to the Diploma, only Wednesdays will
need to be attended. Those wishing to start the
Level 5 Diploma with no previous credits will
be required to attend on a Tuesday once the
