European Standards for Hi Visibility
Garments
There are three types of signalling garments. The garments requiring
fluorescent base material coating and garments requiring retro-reflecting
material coating or alternately, garments coating made with both
characteristics.
EN340: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
This standard contains the general requirements of the protective garments,
defined as covering or replacing the personal garment and designed to
protect against one or several dangers.
Marking:
On the product itself or printed on a label fastened to the product.Set to be
visible and legible.Name, commercial brand.Designation of the product
type.Designation of the size.Number of the appropriate standard. pictograms
and, if necessary, performance levels.The "i" marked on a pictogram indicates
the need for the user to refer to manufacturer instructions.
EN471: SPECIFICATION FOR HI VISIBILITY
CLOTHING
Signalling the user's presence, in order for him to be detected
and seen clearly under dangerous conditions, by day or night
under all luminosity conditions, in the spectrum of head lights.
Classes of Hi Visibility garments
Each of these three classes must have minimal material coating constituting
the garment and this in conformity with the table below
Class 3: The class 3 defines the highest visibility level. Example: jacket with
long sleeves, parkas jacket.trousers suit. Minimum background
material 0.80m2. Minimum retro-reflective material 0.20m2.
Class 2: The class 2 defines an intermediary visibility level. Example: vests,
tunics. Minimum background material 0.50m2. Minimum retroreflective material 0.13m2.
Class 1: The class 1 defines the lowest visibility level. Example: shoulderbelts. Minimum background material 0.14m2. Minimum retroreflective material 0.10m2.
Class of coating of fluorescent basic material (0 to 3) :
It gives the class category of the visible material of retroflecting and
fluorescent.
Class of reflecting material (0 to 2) :
It gives the class category of the retro-reflecting material according to its
retro-reflection coefficient.

APPLICATION
Class 3 workwear must be worn by everyone working on roads with
normal speed restrictions, near railways and under cranes. It must
also be worn by members of the emergency services. As a general
rule, a set of workwear always constitutes class 3 workwear. A
typical combination is trousers and jacket. However, a combination
of shorts and traffic waistcoats also comply with class 3 standards.
A boilersuit by itself is classified as class 3. Parka coats and jackets
(size XS and up) that are worn separately also comply with class 3
standards.
Class 2 workwear must be worn by supervisors working in areas where
class 3 workwear is required. Class 2 workwear typically consists of
a traffic waistcoat, bib & brace or a T-shirt.
Class 1 typically consists of trousers and must be worn by visitors to areas
where class 2 or class 3 workwear is required. Visitors must be
accompanied by the people working in the area.

To ensure proper use of your Hi Visibility workwear the jacket
must be zipped to ensure that the reflective tape is not visibly
broken and the reflective tapes on the legs must not be covered
by the boots.

GO-RT 3279 - APPROVED GARMENTS FOR
RAIL WORKERS
The GO/RT 3279 standard is based on the European standard EN
471:2003. It requires garments to meet at least class 2 (the mid-point of a
3-class scale) of EN 471 for the minimum area of high visibility materials
used within a garment. Whereas the European standard permits several
different colours of high visibility materials, the railway standard
specifies an orange colour.
Railway locomotive headlights pick out retroreflective materials in high
visibility clothing. Again the railway standard draws on EN 471:2003 and
specifies materials for use that meet the highest level of photometric

RESPONSIBILITY
The law stipulates that the employer is responsible for ensuring
that adequate protective workwear is available for everyone’s
disposal in the workplace while the employee is personally
responsible for its proper use.

These are required to conform to class 1 design requirements of EN
471:2003, except they need to exceed the requirements in EN 471 for

This is also known as the air atomiser test which tests for chemical
sprayed under pressure. You’ll see on the logo there is a leaf, this
indicates that it is suitable for use with pesticides and herbicides.

GO-RT 3279 - APPROVED GARMENTS FOR
RAIL WORKERS
The GO/RT 3279 standard is based on the European standard
EN471:2003. It requires garments to meet at least class 2 (the mid-point
of a 3-class scale) of EN 471 for the minimum area of high visibility
materials used within a garment. Whereas the European standard
permits several different colours of high visibility materials, the railway
standard specifies an orange colour.
Railway locomotive headlights pick out retroreflective materials in high
visibility clothing. Again the railway standard draws on EN 471:2003 and
specifies materials for use that meet the highest level of photometric
performance criteria that are specified within the standard.
GO/RT 3279 also defines the requirements for a high visibility minivest.
These are required to conform to class 1 design requirements of EN
471:2003, except they need to exceed the requirements in EN 471 for
both the minimum area of the orange background material and
retroreflective tape used in the garment.

performance chemical protective clothing. Limited performance
chemical protective clothing is intended for use in cases of a potential
exposure to a light spray,
liquid aerosols or low pressure, low volume splashes, against which a
complete liquid permeation barrier (at a molecular level) is not required. The standard covers both chemical protective suits (Type 6)
and partial body protection (TY;e PB [6]). Chemical Protective suits
(Type 6) cover and protect at least the trunk and the limbs, e.g. one
piece coveralls or two piece suits, with or without hood, boot-socks or
boot covers. Partial body protection of similar limited performance
(Type PB [6]) covers and protects only specific parts of the body. e.g.
coats, aprons, sleeves etc.
ATEX DIRECTIVE
The ATEX Directive defines what equipment is
permitted in an environment where an explosive
atmosphere may exist. We recommend using garments
certified to EN1149 and EN ISO 11611 for added
protection in an ATEX environment.
THERMAL HAZARDS OF AN ELECTRIC ARC
An electric ARC or blast as a result of a disruption (e.g.) a short circuit)
in an electric installation generates a sudden release of intense heat
and light causing serious burns, blindness or even death. This blazing
bright electric discharge between two conducting electrodes
 lasts for a very short time (0.5 sec, 1 sec and rarely >1 sec)
 develops a very strong radiant heat (several thousands °C
 creates high physical forces, a pressure wave and generates
pressure shrapnel
 generates a splash of molten metal particles or even generates
vaporized metal
 up to 165 db noise

EC 61482-2 specifies requirements applicable to materials and garments (excl.) protection of head, hands and feet) for protective clothing for electrical workers against the thermal hazards of an electric

Jacket chest size
Here is a simple guide on how to measure yourself for your correct
sizes. It is advised that you take your body measurements as opposed
to measurements over your clothes. Select the corresponding size to
the measurement taken. i.e. if you have a 40” chest select the 40” jacket.
If you are a 41” select the 42” jacket.
All our sizes are what they say they are, so if you have a 35” waist then
we strongly suggest you opt for the 36” waist trouser rather than the
34”. By the very nature of formal events, it is unlikely you will be fasting
when wearing your suit! In any case, our trousers come with side
adjusters to reduce the waist size by up to 2 inches if required.

Measure the area on your waist where you like to wear your trousers.
This should be your natural waistline for formal trousers, however this
is down to personal comfort.
Measure around the middle of your neck, and depending on how loose
you require the collar, you may want to take the next half size up.

This measurement is taken from the centre back of the shirt to the end
of the arm. Our shirts only come in one sleeve length per collar size. As
a general rule, they have fairly generous regular length arms. There is
some minor adjustment in the double cuffs, but if you have relatively
short arms, you may need to wear arm bands.
This is often best taken from an existing pair of well fitting trousers you
have. Measure from the crotch down the inside seam to the end of the
trouser leg. When wearing formal trousers, the trouser leg should just
break on your shoe when standing up straight. We offer a choice of 3
leg lengths, however each pair come finished with approximately 1.5
inches of hem, so they can easily be adjusted if needed.
