Message from the President-Amanda Buchan
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their
dreams.
~Eleanor Roosevelt~
Welcome 2015! The New Year is here and it promises to
be a busy one. I am so excited to be the ADWC President
and look forward to building on all the amazing groundwork that has been laid over the past couple of years.
What an ambitious agenda we have ahead of us! Community Involvement, Membership & Clubhouse are the 2015
focus.
What is the Womens Club? It’s hard to believe that after
all these years there are still so many people in town that
ask that question. So this year we need to focus on making sure EVERYONE knows exactly WHAT the WC is and
WHAT the WC does. That is where the “Community Involvement” component comes in. We have been quietly
supporting the community for years. Time to pull out the
megaphones, toot our own horns and be the squeaky
wheel!
The “Membership” component is essential to our success!
We cannot achieve our goals without our members, and
the more the merrier! We have such a powerhouse of
women in our membership, and each and every one
of you has amazing friends! Now is the time to tap
that stored up energy. Share what you ABSOLUTELY LOVE! Cooking? - Host a “Soup”
night. Kids? - Host a “Movie” night. Beauty? - Host a “Spa” day. And you don’t have to do
it by yourself. Involve your family, invite a couple of friends, ask other members to join
you – and bring an idea that can be made into a reality!
President's Message, continued
And that leads us to the third goal – the building of a new clubhouse. We have laid the groundwork
so that we can get ready to pull permits and start construction. MONEY is required for those next
steps. We don’t expect to raise the funds required FROM our members. But we do expect to raise
the funds THROUGH our membership. It is time to reach out. Do you work with a company that
gives grants or provides fundraising opportunities? Do you know a grant writer, or work with
people who use the services of a grant writer? Do you have other ideas? Bring them!
December 2014 was a great month for the ADWC. We had so much fun at Parade of Tables and the
Installation Dinner and Gift Exchange. Thank you so much to Lee Sola, Lotte Franc, Yolanda Aiello,
Sarah Ash, and Sue White for chairing those events.
January promises to be a great beginning for 2015. While this is a Business Meeting, most of the
business will be related to getting our calendar together for the year – so be sure to bring in all
your ideas and what you are willing to volunteer for. And then it will be time for one of our favorite meetings of the year – White Elephant Gift Exchange! Bring your appetite, your ideas, your crazy gift and your sense of fun!
I am inviting each and every member to get your mind set in “productive” mode. Be ready to claim
your project at the January meeting. Our dreams are big, but not as big as our ability to achieve
them!

January Meeting
The January meeting will include a business meeting and a white elephant exchange.
Now, just because I say white elephant doesn’t mean we should bring things that nobody
wants, hopefully you will bring something that you don’t need, but someone else will
treasure.
About those January Birthdays…
Anne Marenco (January 8), a new AD resident, new member to the
ADWC and in case you did not recognize the name, the new newsletter editor, has a birthday on the same date as some very famous
people. First is Steven Hawking (born 1942), a theoretical physicist who was given a two year life expectancy due to ALS in 1963.
He is 73 years in 2015. For more information visit his home page
at http://www.hawking.org.uk. The second famous person is the
King of Rock and roll, Elvis, born in 1935. He died 8/16/77. And number three is David
Bowie who was born in 1947. Anne has been married to Enrique for 34 years and has a
daughter (30) and a son (25).
Mary Nores (January 25), had a wonderful time sharing the holidays with her loved
ones. Christmas spent with sweet 16 daughter Michelle, husband Jim, extended family
and a visit from son Christopher who currently is based in England (U.S. Air Force). New
Year’s Day was spent with son Matthew in Texas (U.S. Army) She says she is truly blessed
and hopes everyone has a wonderful New Year!
Kristen Hicks (January 25)-Hello Ladies! Wow, another year older...ouch! :-) It has been
an unforgettable year though! The most significant change in my life this past year was to
leave my property management job in June and join forces with my boyfriend Kelly to assist him with filming work. We completed our first job together in West Virginia, which
took about five months to film and edit the educational video content. Our location was a
110 acre farm...so beautiful! We will go back in the spring to finish building a little house
we started there on the farm and see if there are any additional filming projects.
We are thankful to have the flexibility to spend more time helping out with our
families now as well as have the opportunity to travel and enjoy the next adventure. I
have certainly missed all of the ladies at the Women's Club, being on the Board, the New
Building Committee, and planning the many fundraisers and seeing them through to fruition. The Women's Club has been such a big part of my life and I thank you all for being a
part of that! I look forward to contributing to the Club in any way I can in the future. Here's to 2015!
Barbara Bernero-A New Year’s Day baby, in fact, the first baby born in Chicago in… the
year in which she was born, Barbara is the youngest of two (her brother Scott still lives in
the Chicago area with his family).
Married at eighteen, she and her husband, Ed, spent the first three years of married
life in the Philippines, returning home with three children (Amanda, Jason and Cristopher). Back in Chicago, Barbara went to school to study nursing then worked as a surgical
nurse until leaving Chicago for California in 1996.
Becoming involved in charity work in Los Angeles (she is a long time supporter of a
number of dog rescues among other charities), Barbara’s time is now spent between
working for those causes and helping with her five grandchildren (with number six well
on the way).
Stella Varela (January 8)-I've lived in Agua Dulce for 42 years, have been an Agua Dulce
Women's Club member since 1975 or 76. I worked at Agua Dulce School for 2l years and
retired in 1999. I love living in Agua Dulce, except for the heat during the summer
months.
We 've taken a few Cruises, we've visited Europe, Japan, Mexico. When we had a
motorhome we visited many of our US states. Now we are enjoying our home and trying
to keep up with our chores on the property. I don't attend the Woman's Club meetings,
but I do try to support some of the fundraising events as much as I can. Wishing all the
members a very Happy New Year.
Lotte Franck (January 10), is originally from Denmark and she loves to play table tennis
and hike in the surrounding mountains with her neighbors
What’s coming up in February?

Reflections from Sue White, Past Vice-President
I came back to Agua Dulce from Tennessee to enjoy the December festivities going
on the Women’s Club. And enjoy it I did!
A terrific group of ladies made a smash hit of the 2014 Parade of Tables. Being able
to have it at the Agua Dulce Air Park was the icing on the cake to help it work out
beautifully. It was so nice to have the room to see so many more friends than we have
been able to accommodate in our small old building. With luck and some hard work we’ll
have our own grand space to hold such events in the not too distant future.
After that I was pleased to be able to organize the Installation Dinner at Vincent
Hill Restaurant with the help of friends that I can always count on. I have to admit it
wasn’t as easy to do from so far away and I messed up a couple things that hopefully went
unnoticed.
Working with Kellie and her group from Vincent Hill was a pleasure. The Chef and
wait staff did a fantastic job for us. If they were here right now I would call for a huge
round of applause for them.
As usual, Mary Nores had my back covering all the things here that were hard to do
from that distance. She even brought those adorable lantern centerpieces. But nothing
can be more appreciated than just knowing she was always there to help and support me.
Thanks go to Julie White for being so willing yet again to provide the yummy holiday cupcakes for dessert. She’s always ready to jump in and help and fortunately for us
she’s one heck of a cook.
Thank goodness Tana Lampton is always prepared with her trusty camera, and this
year I have to thank Anne Marenco for jumping in already to begin her new position as
newsletter editor, by taking photos of all the goings on as well. Val DeCrowl from the
Country Journal was there to take some too, even though she has been quite ill. But the
press must get the good news out there. Thanks Ladies.
Thank you Judy Barlett for performing the installation of our new officers. No one
knows better than Judy what it takes to be on the board, nor how to volunteer to the fullest.
I can’t thank Lorna Leslie enough for taking on the job as MC at pretty much the
last minute since she knows how much I hate speaking in front of a group (of course my
friends know they can’t shut me up at other times). I did manage to mess her up by telling
her we were going to be playing a game and promptly forgetting to bring some of the critical things to do it; but trooper that she is, she carried on without missing a beat.
Of course Thanks to all of you very special ladies for joining us and making the
evening fun. It obviously would have been nothing without you there. And thank you to
those of you that couldn’t make it but put in so many hours of your hard work and
creativity to keep the Agua Dulce Women’s Club worth coming back for.
Happy Holidays and See you next year!

Agua Dulce Women's Club Installation
of Executive Board Officers for 2015
By Tana Lampton
Darlene Salazar (outgoing Facilities Director)
and Judy Bartlett (Installation Officer)
A bright, cheery and very social Installation Event
for Agua Dulce Women's Club Executive Board Officers was held December 11th at the fabulous Vincent
Hill Restaurant.
Per the Bylaws, the Hostess and "Chief Party Planner" for the annual event is the current Vice President and this year that magnificent woman and longtime veteran of the Board was Sue White. Glamorous and glitzy and at the same time hilarious and fun
-filled, the party was a direct reflection of our hostess who amazingly planned and coordinated
the event from several thousand miles away,
having spent past several months in Tennessee!
Other amazing Board Members pictured at
right with Ms. Sue are outgoing President (2013
-14) Mary Nores and Facilities Chair Darlene
Salazar. These two poised, chic, and ultra hardworking gals (shown receiving special commendation scrolls from Supervisor Antonovich)
sure have pushed the bar up very high for the
incoming Board of 2015!

The 2014 Parade of Tables
BY Yolanda Arvizu
On Saturday, December 6, 2014, the 21st Annual Parade of Tables was held at the Agua Dulce Airport! This is the main event
to raise funds for our student scholarships and philanthropic
endeavors. This was the first time the Parade of Tables was
held at a different venue. Co-Chairs: Yolanda Aiello, Sarah Ash,
Lotte Frank, and Lee Sola decided that they wanted to have a
venue that would hold all the tables in a comfortable environment no matter what the weather and to hold as many tables
as possible since this was the main event to raise funds! This
made it possible for all the hostesses and guests to see, hear
and be a part of the program as well. All those who attended
were pleased that all the tables were in one huge room! Many
thanks to all our members who went above and beyond to
make the event successful as we continue to invest in our
youth! To find out how much was raised make sure you attend the first meeting of the year on January 8, 2015!
and By Anne Marenco
For my first “parade” I was thoroughly enchanted. I love teddy bears and so this one
was perhaps my favorite. However, ALL of the
tables were beautiful and creative. The wonderful ladies who adopted each table put in so
much work and it really showed. The food was
good despite the oven glitch. And the entertainment was so enjoyable. Meghan Freeman was an inspiring speaker and I got a chance to chat
with her for a few minutes after her talk. She is a remarkable person. The raffle prizes were a delight, from handmade items to elegant baskets. I can’t wait for next year. For more photos visit
our gallery at www.ADWC.org
And By Jeanae Ruddell
As the Holidays have descended upon me I strive once again to fulfill my annual Christmas cheer by
participating with friends during the Parade of Tables event. Every year, for the last 9 years, I look
forward to this joyful and colorful gathering through invitation sitting and catching up with some
friends. My dear good friend Julie White amazes me how she goes out of her way every year to create that perfect theme for this event using her magic touch with coordinated dishes and tablecloths
to get that unique look that makes it even more exciting to proudly sit at her table. Not to mention
this year’s event was certainly more spacious helping servers maneuver around better. I cannot
think of a better way to bring in the holiday festivals this time of year then through good food,
drinks, friendship, and sharing the love of the Christmas spirit all together as this traditional event
keeps getting better and better! Love, joy, health, laughter, and peace in 2015.
THANKS TO MY WOMEN’S CLUB FAMILY!
While I’m considered
a “new resident” having
moved here just 12
years ago, one of the first
things I did was join
the Agua Dulce Women’s
Club. See, we bought
our house from Lee and
Lois Moore, whose
daughter Wendy was
then president of the Women’s Club. Wendy and her Mom encouraged me to join the Club
to meet other ladies in the area. And what a good move that was. I have met some very
special ladies that I am honored to call my friends. Just wanted express my gratitude to the
special ladies of my Agua Dulce Women’s Club Family. My sweet mother-in-law, Betty
Johnson, at age 94, started having some serious health issues in October. After each hospital stay, she would come and stay with Martin and I to get back on her feet so she could return to her independent living. Her health was failing quickly, and after her last hospital
visit she chose to be treated with Hospice care at our home. During her last few months,
my family of AD Women’s Club members was a pillar of strength that helped me through
this difficult time. Mary Nores and Julie White were cheerful beacons that always had kind
words and sympathetic shoulders. Julie Feuerhelm paid a visit and shared stories. Former
member, Shirley Brandon, made herself available to help with Betty’s physical care. Lorene
Cangiano offered guidance and expertise about Hospice programs. Pam Baird and her
daughter, Maile, lightened my load finding a home for my horse and Pam was a constant
source of comfort. Sue White, Rosie Heffley, Judy Bartett, Yolanda Aiello, and Adele Parrillo
always had a kind word to offer. Ellen Young’s mom Dorothy was Betty’s roommate at
Henry Mayo and rehab-mate down the road. I have become closer with Ellen and her family and will always have a special bond with
them. And my good friend, Claudia Garner
was by my side through the many ups and
downs. You may remember Betty. I
brought her to many of the ADWC luncheons and other events. She always had a
smile on her face and a cheerful greeting
for anyone she met. I’m going to pay that
forward and vow to smile more. Betty
Johnson: May 20, 1920 – December 18,
2014. With Love, Gratitude, and a Smile,
Mary Johnson
How are you paying it forward?
Paying it forward is an expression for when a person does a good deed for a person without
expecting something in return from that person. It doesn’t matter whether the deed is large
or small. As a club, we do so much in a formal way, but I know we all pay it forward in an
informal way.
For example, I had 68 cents left on a Starbucks gift card and so I gave it to the guy behind
me. I also gave my leftover Albertson’s pot and pan stickers to the man behind me in line.
Another member told me she bought a drink for the kid in front of her in line at Starbucks
who was counting his coins and didn’t appear to have enough.
Someone else went to visit her dad at hospital on Xmas Eve with her family. While they
sat in the hallway waiting for the staff to tend to his needs, they started some impromptu
caroling. Pretty soon several members of the staff were singing along. Then heads started popping around doorways as the patients joined in. Many of them have no one that
comes to visit and loved the memories that caroling with a "family" brought back.
What little things have you done to pay it forward?
