Wet Plate Collodion Juried Show
Quinn Jacobson, Juror
January 20"–"March 4, 2015 • Mariani Gallery, Guggenheim Hall
Closing Reception and Gallery Talk • Wednesday, March 4, 4 – 6 pm
The collodion process is an early photographic process, introduced in the 1850s.
The wet collodion photographic process produced a glass negative and a beautifully
detailed print. Preferred for the quality of the prints and the ease with which they could
be reproduced, the new method thrived from the 1850s until about 1880. The wet plate
collodion process has undergone a revival as a historical technique over the past few
decades. Many fine art photographers also use the process and its handcrafted individuality
for gallery showings and personal work.
Juror Quinn Jacobson is
a Denver fine artist and art
educator who has taught and
created in the United States and
Europe for over 30 years. Since
2000, his area of expertise has been
in historic photographic processes,
concentrating mostly on Wet Plate
Collodion. He played a central role
in (re)introducing the Wet Plate
process to Europe (2006 – 2011)
which created a revival of the
process there.

Alternative Photo Processing:
Down the Rabbit Hole (detail) by Kira Gehle
Alternative Photo Processes are
often called historical, or non-silver,
processes. Most of these processes
were invented over 100 years ago and
were used by early photographers.
Today many contemporary
photographers are revisiting
alternative processes and applying new
technologies and practices to these
techniques.
These works of Alternative
Photo Processes will showcase the
photography of students at UNC.

UNC Opera Theatre
Spring Opera Scenes “Epistles: Letters in Opera”
Saturday, April 4 • 2pm & 7:30pm
Hensel Phelps Theatre, UCCC
A letter is late, a note is noticed, a missive goes missing, and suddenly the entire plot
of the opera is changed. Our program features scenes from operas as diverse as Rossini’s
Barber of Seville to Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin; from comedy to tragedy we’ll exploit
every plot twist on paper in this grand and glorious thing called opera!
Bizet’s Carmen
April 24 & 25 • 7:30pm
Monfort Concert Hall • University Symphony Orchestra with Russell Guyver, conductor
Featuring William Wilson, baritone
Few women in opera evoke such passionate response as Bizet’s gypsy temptress,
Carmen. Is she just using the officer Don José or might she really love him after all?
Presented in the original dialogue version, this production is performed in French, with
English supertitles, featuring our own award-winning University Symphony Orchestra with
Dr. Russell Guyver; directed by Brian Clay Luedloff.

Performing Arts Series
Intimate Apparel
February 5"–"7, 10"–"14 • 7:30pm • February 8 and 15 • 2pm
Norton Theatre • Drama by Lynn Nottage • Directed by Shelly Gaza
Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and the Outer Critics Circle
Awards for Best Play, Intimate Apparel is a deeply moving portrait of Esther, a middle-aged
African-American seamstress, who lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate
apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. Her skills and
discretion are much in demand, and she has managed to stuff a goodly sum of money into
her quilt over the years. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and
move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. Written by
the award-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, Intimate Apparel offers poignant commentary
on the turn-of-the-century era when the cut and color of one’s dress—and of course, skin—
determined whom one could and could not marry, sleep with, or even talk to in public.

Langworthy Theatre • Musical with book by John Caird • Music and lyrics by Stephen
Schwartz • Based on a concept by Charles Lisanby • Directed and Choreographed by Matthew
Herrick • Musical Direction by Dr. Richard Shore
Full of joyous music by legendary composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell,
Pippin) and freely based on the story of Genesis, Children of Eden is a frank and humorous
examination of conflict between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah and the “Father”
who created them deal with the cataclysmic actions of their children. Children of Eden
delivers a bittersweet, inspiring message: “the hardest part of love... is letting go.” Rated PG

Once In A Lifetime
April 23"–"25 • 7:30pm • April 26 • 2pm
Langworthy Theatre • Comedy/Farce by Moss Hart and
George S. Kaufman • Directed by David Grapes
Set in the 1930s, Once in a Lifetime is wacky tale of three
on-the-skids vaudeville troupers heading for Hollywood to
try their luck at the newest craze: “talkies.” After hilarious
misadventures and blunders, the unassuming George is
carried to fame and fortune, becoming (for a short time) a
captain of the film industry. This wild comedy romp offers
slapstick humor and all the lunacy of a Hollywood film set.
