We are Fairford
As a true innovator we can proudly lay claim
to creating the digital soft starter market as we
know it today. In 1979 Fairford introduced digital
electronic control of electric motors to the world.
This significant technological leap gave engineers
the ability to efficiently control the use of electricity
in motorised applications.
McKinsey Global Institute
Since this date Fairford have concentrated on what
it does best. Innovation.
At the heart of this is our focus on developing and
innovating efficiency technologies for industry proven
to meet the economic, financial and corporate social
responsibility needs of global markets.

intelligent Energy
Recovery System
iERS is an advanced industrial technology for use in fixed speed applications.
It is proven to reduce the energy consumed in a variety of industrial and
commercial applications and has been implemented in everything from
HVAC to Oil & Gas.
Soft Start Technology
synergy™ is the result of over 4 years of research development and testing
for a fixed speed soft start motor controller that delivers unrivalled energy saving
by incorporating Fairford’s intelligent Energy Recovery System as standard.
With a world ever hungry for efficient
sources of energy, Fairford can supply
you with the very latest technology that
not only reduces overall running costs,
downtime and maintenance but also
meets the needs of Corporate Social
Responsibility.
iERS is technology that matches the
power consumption to the load of the
motor required. It intelligently monitors
and regulates energy consumption on
fixed speed motors.
iERS monitors the voltage, current and
power factor during the start to deduce
the full load figures. During the running
stage the power factor continues to
be monitored. When the power factor
drops and the motor is lightly loaded,
the inherent losses in the design of
a motor cause excess energy to be
wasted. These are known as excitation
losses. iERS’s constant monitoring
automatically recognises these costly
losses and in turn reduces the voltage
and current. This not only increases the
part load power factor, but reduces the
energy consumption in kW. When the
power factor increases, the motor is
more loaded. iERS then automatically
bypasses itself to remove any losses
within the equipment.
iERS matches power
consumption to the
load required and
intelligently regulates
energy consumption
In 2011 after 20 years of designing
motor control solutions Fairford
developed its first soft start motor
controller with the sole aim of optimising
energy savings. Fairford developed
synergy™ to meet a growing worldwide
need for industry to lower energy
consumption and increase systems
efficiency. With over 70% of the worlds
AC induction motor applications being
fixed speed, synergy™ has been
developed to focus on energy saving
whilst enhancing the increasing
demand for ease of set up and
reduction in downtime.
synergy™ is now being specified as a
retrofit product and also integrated in
OEM equipment from factory build.
synergy™ offers a distinct advantage
over traditional starting methods and is
not only a soft starter. At its core it offers
the additional benefit of a 45 minute
installation time, full programmability,
integrated power meter and field
upgradeable software.
It is unparalleled in its design using
touchscreen technology and offers
the user simple and effective reporting
and communications.
8
synergy™ is not just a soft starter,
it improves AC motor efficiency and
increases overall systems savings for all
motor applications.
Fairford continue to design, supply
and manufacture its standard 2 phase
and single phase soft starters for the
commercial markets and have advanced
the single phase product to incorporate
iERS. Still recognised as the pioneers
of this technology we continue to work
closely with OEMs globally and design
specific and branded products to the
commercial soft start market. Our
design teams work closely with the
marketing and development groups
within these large OEMs and ensure
that products meet the objectives both
commercially and technically that clients
require for their market.
Synergy is state of the art

Vertical Transport
All over the world millions of people are moving every second, on elevators,
escalators and moving walkways. A vital part of the operation of most buildings
vertical transport is proven to save people time but it also consumes a
significant amount of energy. The inherent problem being the continuous power
consumption even during low load, low traffic periods. Fairford have now
designed a simple retrofit that can significantly reduce power consumption with
the added benefit of improving the life of the motor itself, saving downtime.
Medium Voltage
Heavy industries are looking for ever more efficient solutions that are easy
to implement and highly reliable. Fairford and its partners have developed
technological solutions to meet the needs of large industrial users including
Marine, Oil & Gas and Water.
With over 1,000,000 low and medium
voltage soft starters in operation,
Fairford have the expertise and
application knowledge you need.
With exceptional protection our medium
voltage soft starter, Centris, is the
number one choice for fixed speed
motors. Centris protects both your
motor and your load and is recognised
by users and OEM’s around the world
as a leading medium voltage soft starter
on the market today.
Centris provides the system protection
features found in expensive “stand
alone” motor protection relays without
costly add-on cards or discreet devices.
Choose the acceleration ramp that
is best for your application from the
Centris profiles.
Fairford have designed the first motor
controller for the VT market and
specifically for enhanced energy saving in
escalators and hydraulic elevators.
With increased rebate schemes on offer
to offset costs and the spiralling costs of
maintaining contactors in escalator
applications, synergy™ VT is now
becoming specified as a retrofit product
and also integrated in OEM equipment
from factory build.
At its core it offers a 45 minute installation
time and full programmability as well as
an integrated power meter and field
upgradeable software. Using touchscreen
technology it offers the user simple and
effective reporting and communications.
10
With over 15% of a buildings energy
consumption attributed to elevators and
escalators, the potential savings are
substantial. A simple 45 minute retrofit
can contribute up to 8% savings in
elevator and 15 - 30% in escalators
energy consumption.
With the added benefit of a soft start
included our technology also:
• Reduces motor temperature
• Reduces peak in-rush current demand
• Increases motor life
• Decreases stress on mechanical
systems
• Reduces machine room temperature
• Reduces AC costs
• Reduces oil temperature

Oil & Gas
The energy sector is increasingly looking to develop resources which previously
either technically or economically were unfeasible. The cost in energy terms
of recovering these reserves is now a key factor and Fairford have developed
solutions to reduce the amount of energy required to extract oil and gas by
up to 32%.
Fairford has thousands of motor
controllers working in sites all over
the world covering a wide range of
applications in oil & gas industries.
These range from controlling the energy
consumption of artificial lift pump
jacks in US oil fields to natural gas
compressors in the Middle East. At
Fairford we have the experience to help
you get the most out of your application
with the minimum possible input.
Because our Sales and R&D
departments are part of an integrated
team on one site, Fairford are uniquely
able to respond and apply our wide
experience to specific problems in this
industry. Taking this innovative approach
enables Fairford to become an integral
partner to your project rather than just
another supplier.
