46th ANNUAL
We need to pray and intercede before God for more
vocations to the priesthood. This is becoming more
critical in dioceses throughout the country, especially
our Diocese of Rockford. Without the priesthood there
is no Eucharist Adoration, no Mass and no absolution
of our sins in the Sacrament of Confession. The number of priests being ordained each year is less than the
number of priests who step down from active ministry each year. We are
blessed to have three priests at this parish, therefore, we are often called
upon to assist at other parishes. Fr. Draper, for instance, has been helping
assist Msgr. Tom Bales, a.k.a. “Fr. Tom”, at his parishes the last few weekends. Fr. Tom wrote in his bulletin last week that he has been tired and
short of breath because of heart trouble. Let’s keep him in our prayers
and many of the veteran priests who serve so faithfully. We need them
healthy and younger priests to assist. There are a number of parishes in
our diocese, especially west of Rockford, that do not have Mass every
day because one priest is serving as pastor to several parishes.
The good Lord truly wants to give us far more than we can ask or imagine. But we need to pray daily for men who are called. Pray that they
hear God’s voice and courageously accept the invitation to priesthood.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that we are to be prayer
intercessors. "In intercession, he who prays looks "not only to his own
interests, but also to the interests of others" (C.C.C. # 2635).

NATIONAl SANCTITY OF HUMAN lIFE DAY... is celebrated
on January 18, 2015. National Sanctity of Human Life Day is
an observance declared by several U.S. Presidents who
opposed abortion. President Ronald Reagan designated
January 22, 1984 as the first National Sanctity of Human
Life Day. The date was chosen to coincide with the 11th
anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that
first recognized the constitutionally-protected status of
abortion in the United States.
Fourth Friday - Friday, January 23rd is Holy Cross's day to
provide a prayerful presence at Planned Parenthood in

Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, volunteer agency that is directed and operated by community and local
church volunteers throughout the Fox Valley. Those who visit and
use the Food Pantry are our neighbors and friends: people with
disabilities, seniors, low income families, and families who have
lost their jobs. Holy Cross has a monthly collection the first
weekend of each month. Our next collection is the weekend of
Jan. 31st & Feb. 1st. We are responsible for collecting non-perishable food items and paper products. All donations should be
brought to church and placed in the coat closet in the narthex.

FROM THE ‘CARD SENDING’ lEADER …
WE NEED YOU! by Kay DiVerde
I have been sending cards to lonely seniors through
the Enriching Lives Ministry (ELM) for over 6 years.
I was a little overwhelmed when I took over
coordinating this part of ELM. As the years go by,
I am amazed and overjoyed at the generosity of
people willing to share their love with others.
It's always so exciting when I get a note from
someone asking for another dozen names to send cards to. Scout groups, youth
groups, classroom teachers and individuals contact me asking for names. What
great lessons our kids are learning about reaching out to others. I know sending

cards is such a rewarding activity for so many people. I am reassured of this
when I get notes from volunteers asking for names to give to their friends and
family to start sending cards. Thank you to all of our volunteers for your generosity. We have many lonely people waiting to hear from you. Please prayerfully consider joining this ministry in the new year.

We are now in Ordinary Time in our Church year. That is an
interesting term that is used between the major feasts of the
Church year, but time is never 'ordinary' in our lives. Our
'ordinary time' passes very quickly as one day flows swiftly
into another day. It seems that our days are very crowded
with all the electronic gadgets that are always 'on' and
keeping us 'connected' to the point of frustration many times.
Haven't we all heard ourselves say, "I'm too busy"! Don't let this new
year rush by...take time to push your 'pause' button so that you slow
down and 'pray'! Prayer is a form of communication with God and
we don't need an iPhone or and iPad or a computer to do it! We just
need to talk to Him in our own way! It doesn't have to be formal
prayers. Just talk to Him as though He is your friend because He is
just that and so much more! He is a very good listener too! We don't
even have to talk all the time as it is wonderful to just listen to what
He has to say to us! He is speaking to each of us most of the time,
but we're too busy with the chatter of the media to hear Him! Daily
prayer provides structure in our lives and keeps our thoughts
focused on God, Mother Mary, the Saints and the Angels who influence our lives. Let God lead the way! Give the power of prayer a try!
This Saturday, January 24th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint
Francis De Sales, Bishop, Doctor of the Church, Patron Saint of journalists and writers. He was known as the 'gentleman saint' as he
lived a life of patience, humility, Christian meekness and love.
Through his example, and his writings, he reinforced the role of faith
and love in everyday life...not just for the clergy, but for the secular/ordinary person as well.
One of his greatest works was Introduction to the Devout Life which
is still a powerful and meaningful source of spiritual direction for all
of us! This book is worthy of our contemplation as St. Francis De
Sales attempts to help us discern what it means to be a child of God
in this secular world. He shows us how to glorify God in our secular
world; how we can be a testimony to the world of God's abounding
grace, love and mercy. Just like each of us, he was also very busy
with not much time to think of himself, but he praised God, for he
found that active work did not weaken his spiritual inner peace, but
strengthened it! He encouraged ordinary people to love God by
turning their hearts to God in prayer and meditation so that their
whole soul would be filled with God. "Bring all of your prayers to the
presence of God." He often advised busy people to, "Retire at various times into the solitude of your own heart, even while outwardly
engaged in discussion or transactions with others and talk to God."
May we follow his fine example!
Let us pray: Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather
look at them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own
you are, will deliver you from out of them. He has kept you hitherto,
and He will lead you safely through all things, and when you cannot
stand it, God will enfold you in his arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today
will take care of you then and everyday. He will either shield you
from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at
peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

PARISH POLICY ON DISTRIBUTING MATERIALS. . .

office. No materials shall be place placed on parishioners’
vehicles or anywhere on the parish property. In order to
properly review the aforementioned items, it is recommended that they be submitted at least one week prior to distribution.
PARISH CALENDAR ROOM RESERVATIONS. . . MUST
be made in advance for any parish group wishing to meet at
Holy Cross. Call the parish office to reserve a room. If you
are not on the parish calendar you do not have a room. Our
parish calendar is set up for an entire year and most rooms
are currently reserved. We will make every effort to accommodate any parish group.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Participation in a baptism preparation class is mandatory for
infant baptism. Parents are encouraged to attend the class as
early as possible - up to 3 months prior to the arrival of their
baby. Sessions are held in the CECC building room 216 on the
3rd Sunday of every month following the 8:00AM Mass.
Baptism dates are assigned at these sessions. Baptisms are held
immediately following the 4:15PM Saturday evening Mass.

SACRAMENTS OF FIRST HOLY
COMMUNION AND FIRST RECONCILIATION
Youth participate in the sacramental preparation program coordinated by the Children’s Religious Education Minister in their
2nd grade year. Contact the religious education office at 630-8794751 ext. 110 for details.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
Youth participate in the sacramental preparation program coordinated by the Early Teen Minister and are confirmed in their
8th grade year. Contact the religious education office at 630879-4751 ext. 109 for details.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Only registered parishioners are eligible. Arrangements are to
be made by calling the parish office at least 6 months in
advance. It is necessary to book your wedding date with the
parish office prior to booking a reception hall. Weddings are
held on Saturday afternoons only, at 2:00PM.
SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Please notify the Parish Office if you or someone you know will
be hospitalized or confined at home and would like to be
anointed by a priest.
SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS
If you or someone you know is interested in the priesthood,

(RCIA)
An experience of learning and discernment for Catholics who
