In October, approximately 150 parents turned out for the Parent Academy Workshop, sponsored by the district and the Baldwin Council of PTAs, where educational consultant Melissa Pagano presented the components of Go Math!, which encourages active learning to solve and explain math. This was followed by more math strategies for parents of students in grades 3-5 at the Districtwide Parent Workshop at Steele in November and a Parent University program in December. There will be a Parent University program for parents of students in K-2 on January 27 and a Districtwide Parent Workshop in the spring. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shari L. Camhi has also started a series of professional development programs for district administrators. At the first meeting in October, they worked on a deepening understanding of the rubric for the Danielson Framework for Teaching that correlates with the Common Core. Baldwin’s teaching practices focus on five pillars of instruction: differentiation, inquiry, Teaching for Understanding, Understanding by Design, and social/emotional learning. At the Superintendent’s Conference Day in November, staff participated in a variety of workshops, including ones on Go Math!, elementary writing, and Response to Intervention (RtI), and out-of-district trips such as to Brookhaven Lab, Cradle of Aviation, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
