Position Title: Meteorologist Position Status: Full-time (40 hrs/wk), with benefits Position Location: Troy, NY Job Description: The meteorologist will play a multi-disciplinary role in MESO’s forecast operations group. This person will use a combination of meteorological and programming knowledge and skills to perform tasks such as preparing and delivering regular weather briefings, evaluating forecast performance, and writing software applications in support of operational forecasting systems within a real-time 24x7 data delivery environment. The exact nature of the programming component of this position will be based on the candidate’s programming background. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and in a team upon receiving direction. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential. Specific responsibilities of this position include: Interact with a team of meteorologists and programmers to develop and implement accurate and efficient approaches to operational forecas ting for a variety of weather-sensitive applications Create, modify, and maintain software programs to aid in the accuracy, functionality, and usability of operational forecasting systems Monitor forecasted and observed weather conditions to identify hazards that may have critical impacts on client operations Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or higher in meteorology or related field 2+ years on-the-job programming experience in a Unix/Linux environment Experience in programming with at l east one high-level language, such as Fortran, Perl, C/C++, or Python Ability to learn additional programming languages as needed Authorization to work in the U.S. (without sponsorship) Desired (but not required) Skills: Knowledge, education, or experience in the renewable energy industry Experience with web programming languages and databases, such as JavaScript, Ajax, PHP, CSS, and MySQL Familiarity with Java-based XML REST and SOAP web services Compensation: Negotiable, based on experience and qualifications.
