THE VOLUNTEERING NEWSLETTER OF YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST
Marie joins the team

My name is Marie Fooks and I am the new
Volunteering Development Officer for the North
and East regions; some of you may recognise me
as this is not my first role with Yorkshire Wildlife
Trust. Five years ago I worked for a short time in
the volunteering team as a Volunteer Assistant and
was lucky enough to get out and meet quite a few volunteers and Supporter
Groups back then. More recently I have worked on the Dig In Project, first as a
Project Assistant and then for the last year as Project Officer. In between roles
at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust I have worked for another conservation charity,
The Conservation Volunteers, in roles that were centred around volunteer
involvement and development. My three years working on the Dig In project
has showed me the power of volunteer involvement in communities and how
much positive difference volunteers can make to our natural environment and
wildlife! I’m also a volunteer myself and help out with a community garden
where I live and I am the Treasurer for a small group that helps raises funds for
environmental projects in York. I look forward to working with you and getting
out to meet some of you on site in the coming months.
NEW! Spurn Point task days
Wednesdays and Sundays from 10am—3.30pm.
Meet at the Blue Bell, Kilnsea, HU12 0UB at 9.45am.
Come along and meet staff and other volunteers and get stuck in with helping
to look after this National Nature Reserve and unique sandspit habitat for
migratory birds. Tasks such as scrub management, habitat restoration and
replacement of signage and benches are all needed in the coming months
(full training and instruction will be given on the day.) We may be doing work
at the northern end of the reserve or travelling by Unimog to the Point area
depending upon tide times and weather conditions. Appropriate clothing
should be worn and wellies are best so you don’t get wet sandy feet! Please
bring a hot drink and food with you as there aren’t catering facilities on site
(except the hot dogs provided on the March Task Day!)

to develop their leadership skills and knowledge to be able
to help with leading
tasks with groups of
volunteers in the future.
Topics covered include
“what makes a good
task day?”, health
and safety aspects of
running groups, the
paperwork you need
to use when leading
groups and dealing
with difficult volunteers
and problem solving.
