He received a B.S degree in chemistry from University of Science and Technology and China, Hefei, China, in 1997; M.A. degree in chemistry and Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1999 and 2002, respectively. From 2002 to 2008, Dr. Duan was a Founding Scientist, Principal Scientist and Manager of Advanced Technology at Nanosys Inc., a nanotechnology startup founded based partly on his doctoral research. In 2008, he joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Duan has carried out pioneering work in developing methods for rational synthesis and hierarchical assembly of semiconductor nanowires into increasingly complex architectures, and investigating and developing new nanoscale device concepts based on these assembled nanostructures. Dr. Duan has published key papers in Science, Nature, and Nano Letters, which have been highlighted by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and cited as Breakthrough of the Year (2001), by Science magazine, Chemistry Highlights 2001, and by Chemical and Engineering News.
