Big steps in our Listening into Action journey!
It’s a really exciting week for Listening into Action this week, because on
Friday we will be announcing the first schemes that will be taken forward.
The LiA sponsor group have read and analysed every single piece of
feedback we received through the Big Conversations – including each of
the hundreds of comments you wrote on tablecloths and all the additional
comments that came from our additional online “Three Big Questions” survey – so that we could gain a full
understanding of what matters most to all of you. We have also analysed all of the results of the Pulse Check
Survey that more than a third of you took part in back in October, right at the beginning of our LiA journey.
On Friday, we will unveil our single “What Matters to Our Staff” document, which maps out
the issues that most affect you and the overall actions that will bring you the biggest positive changes.
Our LiA lead Liz
McDougall
The group has also read and analysed everyone of the dozens of expressions of interest
we received in shaping and leading the “First 10” Pioneering Schemes, – and there were
some really inspiring suggestions, with the enthusiasm of staff members shining through
each of them. So on Friday, we will publish details of which schemes will be our “First 10”
Pioneers, along with details of “Enabling our People” programmes specifically designed to
break down the barriers we all face in our day-to-day work. We’ll also be announcing some
really quick, immediate actions we will be taking that you have told us will help you give
better patient care.
Look out for much more information on Friday, and don’t forget to keep an eye on our Listening into Action
intranet page and website page.
Don’t forget about our waste amnesty...
Make sure you make the most of our waste amnesty dates at all sites on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February .If
you have old chairs, cabinets, medical equipment and electrical items cluttering up your wards and departments,
then get rid of them!
Contact the Patient Environment Team in advance to arrange collection of any heavy or bulky items from your
area. For more information on the amnesty contact the Waste Manager on 07813 454159, or the Patient

A helping hand at WGH from local MP
Our patients and staff at WGH had a helping hand on Friday 9 January, in the
shape of Tim Farron MP. Tim visited the hospital to spend time working under
supervision with our catering, portering and domestic teams as they work hard
to keep our buildings and services running smoothly.
He met and chatted with volunteers, tried out working on our reception desk,
served coffee in our 2Go cafe, took calls at our switchboard, helped clean our
wards and corridors, and served meals to patients.
Tim said; “I want to pay tribute to the amazing doctors, nurses and staff I met
at WGH. They really are second to none.”

Helme Chase on-call service - a reminder for staff
Just a reminder to all staff that Helme Chase at WGH now operates on an on-call basis only out of hours and
at weekends. Whilst this still means that women can give birth at the unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
staff are not resident in the unit during these times so are unable to answer calls from within the hospital,
unless it is in regards to a women needing help and support. Thank you in advance for your support.
An out of hours on-call service allows us to use the workforce we have more
flexibly to support maternity services wherever it is needed. For example, if a
midwife is on-call one night, they would not be on the rota for a shift the following
day in case they are called out overnight. If they are not called out during the
night, they will be able to work where the service needed them to the following
day. It will also offer women greater choice; with a further opportunity to consider
a home birth should they wish.

Anti-Fraud - what do you know about it?
Do you know who your Local Counter Fraud Specialist is? Would you report your
suspicions or concerns? According to the National Fraud Authority, fraud and
corruption costs the NHS over £2 billion a year!
We all have a duty to protect the NHS and every one of us has an important part to
play in creating an effective counter fraud and corruption culture, especially in the
current climate of ever-tightening NHS budgets and constraints.
Your Local Counter Fraud Specialist, Claire Ward, needs your help in understanding
how effectively the anti fraud arrangements are working and therefore would appreciate it if you would take a couple of minutes
to complete a brief staff survey by following this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JQ2WF2Q
The information you provide will be acted upon by the Local Anti-Fraud Specialist and your help may prevent money being
defrauded from the Trust.
We can all start by being more vigilant and if you do suspect someone may be committing fraud or corruption against the Trust,
please report it via one of the following methods:
 Our Local Anti-Fraud Specialist (LAFS) Claire Ward on 0151 285 4714 or [email protected]
 Confidentially, via the NHS Fraud and Corruption Reporting Line on 0800 028 40 60
 Confidentially, via the online reporting form at www.reportnhsfraud.nhs.uk
Employee Self Service
The Electronic Staff Record (ESR) is an integrated Human Resources and Payroll system used throughout
the NHS. As part of the development of ESR, staff are now able to amend their own personal details, and
view the following:
 Employment information
 Payslips and P60s
 Total reward statements
This facility can be accessed via the Employee Self-Service section of the Pay
and Pensions page on the Trust’s intranet:http://uhmb/cd/hr/pp/Pages/default.aspx.
A user guide is also available on the intranet giving full details of this new facility.
The ESR will be rolled out in stages, and there may be some issues for those staff
that Employment do not have the Smartcard details for. If you have any queries or issues accessing
Employee Self-Service, please contact Employment Services on ext 42105.
Incident and Risk Reporting
All staff have a professional and ethical responsibility to ensure that patients, staff, and visitors come to no
unnecessary harm whilst in our care or at work. Incidents (including near misses) should be reported within 24
hours of the incident occurring. All staff have access to the online incident and risk reporting form which can be
accessed via the intranet >Favourites>Incident and Risk Reporting. Your username and password are the same
as your usual computer login . Training sessions are available for all staff, bookable on TMS, for incident
reporting, managing, and root cause analysis.

Self Administration of Insulin Policy
The use of insulin is complex and its misuse can have
major consequences. These consequences may vary
from prolonged length of stay, through to serious
drug-related harm or even death.
Many people are highly skilled in administering their
own insulin. It is recognised that patients with diabetes
are often the expert in their own insulin regime, and
should be encouraged to continue this selfmanagement in hospital where possible.
A new procedure has now been implemented at
the RLI (from Monday 19 January 2015), with FGH
to follow at a later date.
Rollout will be supported by the Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurses at ward level, we will highlight appropriate
patients and assist with the process initially, our rolling education programme has also been adapted to include
training on new policies. This can be found on the Diabetes Intranet page at http://uhmb/clinicalservices/
diabetes/Pages/default.aspx
The quality and safety of care, as well as patient choice, will be significantly improved if patients who choose
to manage their own diabetes treatment are encouraged to do so, wherever possible, and as early as possible.
The document also supports improved sharps safety. A high percentage of needle-stick Injuries within the
Trust involve inappropriate disposal of insulin related sharps by patients. Patients self-managing their insulin
will be encouraged to use the safety needles, or be counselled on the importance of safe disposal to protect
hospital staff and other patients.
The procedure can be found on Heritage, and on the Diabetes Intranet page. All clinical staff should familiarise
themselves with this document as soon as possible. This policy is a positive step forward for the Trust,
leading the way for future developments in self-medication schemes for patients for other long-term
conditions.

Equality and Diversity improvement
How well does our Trust do at making sure everyone is treat equitably, no matter who they are? We are about to
launch a new initiative to improve support for patients, their carers, staff and visitors who have one or more of the
‘protected characteristics’ listed in the Equality Act 2010.
To help us set this off, we are calling on staff who have a general interest in diversity and inclusion, or in one of the
protected characteristics in particular, to tell us your views! For more information about our plans, and an informal
discussion, please contact Karmini Willmott, HR Business Partner,
[email protected], or 07760 426250.
Protected characteristics under the Equality Act are:
Age
Disability
Gender reassignment
Marriage
Civil partnership
Pregnancy and maternity
Race
Religion and belief
Sex (gender)
Sexual orientation
Go to the Equality and Diversity intranet page for more information
about our current work in this area, as well as more detailed descriptions
of protected characteristics.
Job of the Week
We are looking for an enthusiastic Radiographer to join our
friendly team. You will be expected to participate in the shift rota, which includes extended days and night duties,
as part of their core hours. We are currently training radiographers to perform CT head scans. This is a progressive
directorate that supports CPD and role development. If you are interested in pursuing your career in a friendly and
progressive department, please contact Christine Spry, Deputy Head of Department, on 01229 491033 for further
information or to arrange an informal visit. Closing date is 26 January 2015.
Re-vamped Pulse survey next week!
There will be no excuse not to take part in our next round of re-vamped staff Pulse surveys
next week! HR staff will be walking around our sites with iPads, helping those who have less
access to computers as part of their day-to-day work, to complete the survey.
Pulse surveys will now be held every month, so that we can accurately benchmark and track
how staff are feeling, drilling down into a clear picture of whether staff you feel supported and
valued by your managers, whether you understand the ongoing work and priorities right
across the Trust, and whether the structures and processes you work within are helping or
hindering your work. New questions have been added to the survey, based on our ongoing Listening into Action
programme.
After we have carried out the first few months’ surveys, we will also be asking you whether you feel that your
feedback through the Pulse survey has been taken into account. We’ll also be following up with managers where
views don’t appear to have been acted upon. So please take part and be honest, and help us to make our Trust:
“A great place to be cared for; a great place to work”!
