Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

In the third line of “The Prayer of St. Francis,” the author moves into a series of dichotomies dividing
human from divine impulses. Rather than add to the hatred that characterizes many human
endeavors, he (or she) seeks the assistance of God to be a kind of love farmer. “Sow” denotes someone close to the earth—like Bill Bell, for example, who sowed love by teaching Mexican farmers to
increase production and feed the hungry. Matthew 25:40 speaks to his mission: “And the king will
answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my
family, you did it to me’.”
It is easy to love those who love us, harder to love our enemies and those who might be potential
targets of our hatred. False prophets warn, “Be careful what you pray for,” advice I reject at face
value; I doubt God grants prayers that will be harmful to me or others. But there is no denying that
there are difficult individuals that are hard to love; I hope to move at least to neutrality in those
cases. Certainly prayer for them and also for my attitude is a good starting point.
And, there is the problem of definition: to paraphrase some of I Corinthians 13: “Love is
patient, kind, does not envy, boast or dishonor others, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered and
keeps no record of wrongs. It does not delight in evil and always protects, trusts, hopes and
perseveres.” These words give me hope. Probably I can manage some of those things. Kindness to
people I do not much like is not difficult. Yes, that I can do. . . Amen.
