We Take Play Seriously 2012–13 Annual Report

We Take Play Seriously
2012–13 Annual Report
“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from
serious learning. But for children play is serious
learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
— Fred Rogers
Play is essential. It’s how kids learn to invent, share, and explore.
We don’t impose boundaries and there is no right way to play at MCM.
This open-ended environment makes learning through play possible.
This year alone, over 210,000 children and families explored four
brand new, custom-crafted permanent exhibits and 14 temporary
exhibits in the galleries; expanded their knowledge at 800 educational
classes and workshops; and attended fun events that brought them
closer to the people and places of their community.
Madison Children’s Museum is a learning playground with chances to
make a discovery or a mess or a brand new friend during every visit.
We look forward to continuing and improving our work as we look to
2014 and beyond. Thank you for being part of it.
Deb Gilpin, Executive Director
We are blessed with community treasures that add such vitality
and character to our culture. That includes the Madison Children’s
Museum. No matter your age, you will learn in every visit to this
special place, and you will recognize the value of its programs and
people. This Annual Report is but a snapshot of events, participants,
and exhibits. It is such a worthy investment in our future. Come and
play! Be inspired! Learn and grow! Share talents and knowledge!
Become a part of our ever-growing family… and bring your friends!
Diane Ballweg, Chair, Board of Directors
Mission: Madison Children’s Museum connects
children with their families, their communities, and the
world beyond through discovery learning and creative play.

Discovery learning and creative play is central to every MCM exhibit. Here’s a glimpse into last year’s exhibit exploration at MCM.

It’s a three-season wonderland for the museum’s youngest
visitors to learn about sustainability and ecosystems as they
observe and interact with nature in the very heart of the city.
The Oscillaser! is lighting up the Wayback Machine
with far-out frequencies and wave patterns. Aspiring
tech gurus are in control, using their voices and
hidden microphones to create music and light shows.

MCM’s KidShare program encourages
kids to share their view of the world and
connect with their local communities
through creative storytelling, mapping
adventures, and question-and-answer
programs!
The HistoriScope offers kids an engaging look
into life on the Capitol Square from the Ice Age to
early European settlements. It features a series of
custom, 3-D illustrations that help kids visualize
Madison before their time.
MCM shared original, animated paintings from
author Maira Kalman’s What Pete Ate, a story
of Pete the pup’s adventurous appetite and
unconventional palate.

The Community Concourse features a variety
of artwork and is free and open to the public.

Community impact
Economic Impact Statement
We strengthen the local economy
We promote tourism
Madison Children’s Museum’s new building
represents a $16.5 million capital investment in
downtown Madison.
Since opening in 2010, the museum has served
visitors from 32 states and 23 Wisconsin counties.
In the summer, 15-20% of our visitors come from
outside Dane County.
We educate children and families
We offered more than 800 educational programs
in the arts, history, culture, science, health, and
civic engagement last year.
We model sustainability
Anticipated to be the first LEED-certified museum
in Wisconsin, MCM is a model of green renovation,
exhibit design, and sustainable operations.
We provide jobs
The museum provides 54 jobs (28 full-time and
26 part-time) for a wide range of skills.
We use Wisconsin products
From the beautiful hardwood floors to energysaving bathroom fixtures, our facility is a showcase
of Wisconsin natural resources and manufactured
products.
4
access for everyone
MCM’s goal is to always say yes to play, which is
why we created the Access for Everyone program.
After all, it’s the kids that fill our museum with
wonder!
Access for Everyone provided more than $200,000
in discounts in FY13, allowing 30,228 high-need
children, caregivers, and groups to engage in
playful learning at the museum — 14.4% of our
total audience served.
Access for Everyone is made possible by underwriting support from
generous corporations, foundations, and individuals.
Access for Everyone serves our community
through these primary initiatives:
Family Access Memberships
Last year, the museum offered 819 free and
reduced-priced family memberships, representing
17% of total memberships in FY13, totaling
$100,224 in discounts.
Free Family Nights
Free Family Night offers free museum admission
for all on the first Wednesday of every month from
5-8 in the evening. This highly visible MCM program
served 4,283 children and adults in FY13, totaling
over $34,000 in discounts.
819 Access memberships in FY13
Admission Discounts
MCM welcomed 13,706 discounted admission
visitors last year, for a total discount of nearly
$85,000.

SAPAR (School Aged Parents Program)
Spark!
MCM collaborates with Madison Metropolitan
School District to provide teen moms with support
services that meet their academic needs along
with childbirth, prenatal, child development, and
parenting classes.
Over the past year, SPARK! provided 35 cultural
programs to 338 people. SPARK! brings children
together with adults who have memory loss, where
they create projects, build understanding, and
learn new things. In 2013 MCM opened a second
monthy SPARK! workshop to better serve elders
in our community.
n 25 moms and 20 babies served this year

SummerPalooza takes over downtown
for a day of family fun. This summer
celebration is a partnership between
Rotary Club of Madison and MCM,
boasting free MCM admission for
everyone, creative and explorative
activities, a lively lineup of local
entertainment, and a parade around the
Capitol Square.
Part of a national program developed
by the Museum of Science in Boston,
MCM’s Living Lab gives cognitive
scientists the opportunity to conduct
experiments in child development at the
museum, and then talk with parents and
visitors about their research.
Adults enjoy the museum for a night
of lighthearted and environmentally
friendly fun.
MCM is committed to celebrating a
variety of cultures. In fact, the museum
has a traditional Hmong garden on the
rooftop and hosts two festivals a year
to share Hmong traditions, cuisine, and
language with visitors.
