Technical Information – Planibel Sample 06/2014 1 INTRODUCTION This Technical information gives information about sample of the range of float glass Planibel: Planibel Clear, Planibel Clearvision, Planibel Linea Azzurra, Planibel Azur, Planibel Bronze, Planibel Dark Blue, Planibel Dark Grey, Planibel Green, Planibel Grey and Planibel Privablue. 2 COLORS OF GLASS SAMPLE VERSUS FULL SIZE INSTALLATION. The comparison of a small size glass sample, especially looking the color on the edge of glass, and the final product full size installation can show some variation due to the different size and thickness of the glass. The color of the glass is due to the absorption inside the glass when the light passes through the glass. When looking at the glass from the top (through the face), light travel through a few millimeters of glass few light absorption. (see figure 1 left.) When looking at the edge of the glass, the light passes through the all length of the glass so light travel through several centimeter or meter of glass increased absorption (see figure 1 right.) Figure 1. Absorption is smaller when looking through the face of the glass than when looking through the edge of the glass because the distance is more important. 2 Example : The table below show an approximation of the visual aspect on the edge of clear and extra clear glass for several size of sample. Color of 50 cm sample of extra clear glass appear on the edge as quite similar to 5 cm sample of normal clear glass. Size of sample (cm) Extra clear glass Normal clear glass 5 10 20 30 40 50 Conclusions : - Color of glass when looking from the top (face) or through the edge appears different. - Color of glass when looking from the top (face) appears different in function of the thickness of the glass. - Color of the glass through the edge appears different function of the size of the glass sample. Based on these fact, we can recommend : - Always compare sample of same size / thickness. - Be aware that visual aspect on the edge of final full size glass surface can be different than the visual aspect on the edge of a small glass sample. - On a particular application, always use same glass thickness on all the visible surface (especially if colored glass is used) to have the same visual aspect on all the surface (for tinted glass, color appearance is function of the glass thickness). 3 OTHER RELATED DOCUMENTS Following documents are also available from www.YourGlass.com: Processing Guide Technical Data Sheet Cleaning and Maintenance Guide for Façade glazing Glazing Instruction CE-Marking declarations 3
