A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD
CONFESSION AND SATISFACTION
The adversaries say that satisfactions benefit by the outward work in such a way that, even
though they are done in mortal sin, they still deliver from the punishments. When the
passage of Paul is cited against us, "But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be
judged [by the Lord]" (1 Corinthians 11:31), "to judge" should be understood to include
all of repentance and required fruit, not works that are not required. Our adversaries pay
the penalty for hating grammar. They understand "to judge" to equal making a pilgrimage
dressed in armor, or similar works. "To judge" means all of repentance; it means to
condemn sins. This condemnation truly happens in contrition and the change of life. Isaiah
1:16-19 teaches, "Cease to do evil, learn to do good.… Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow.… If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of
the land." Neither should a most important meaning be transferred from all of repentance,
and from works required or commanded by God, to the works of human traditions.
Common evils are reduced by our repentance and by the true fruit of repentance, by good
works completed from faith. Here belongs the example of the Ninevites (Jonah 3:10), who
by their repentance (all of repentance) were reconciled to God and received the favor that
their city was not destroyed.

It pleased the Lord to call Barbara Gobert to Himself on Saturday, January 17. She died
after a very long illness in Kitchener-Waterloo, On. Her funeral plans have not been announced,
but will be shared with our congregation when finalized. Jesus said, “As I live, you shall live
also” (John 14:19). God impress that promise deeply on all who feel sorrow at Barbara’s death.
Sunday School for Adults- The New Sunday Morning Bible Class (9:30-10:15) will
cover the same lessons as our Sunday School but look at them at a broader level. This Bible class
is for you. Whether your children are in Sunday School or you are looking to understand more
about what God has done for you, come out and see. Both of our Pastors (Schnarr and Bugbee)
will take turns leading the class.
Monday Evening Bible Class - "The Faith" will run February 2nd to March 30th
from7:45-9:00 pm. It will cover the foundations of the faith Luther taught in the catechism. It
will double as an adult instruction class for those desiring to go to the Lord's Supper, so come
prepared to ask those hard questions you have in your heart and mind, for this class is going to be
gritty.
Ash Wednesday - On Feb. 18th Beautiful Savior will begin the observation of Lent with a
soup supper at 6:30 pm followed by service at 7:30 p.m. The service will feature the imposition
of ashes and the Lord's Supper. This year's Lenten theme is "Calling Us Home" - a look at the
book of 1 Peter.
Preaching Occasions - Pastor Bugbee will be preaching on Feb. 15th and Mar. 15th.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Lutheran Volunteer Ministries need’s volunteer’s to visit
Lutheran patient’s residing in Personal Care Centre’s in Winnipeg. Training is provided and time

On Saturday, January 31st Canadian Lutheran World Relief will present a matinee
screening of The Good Lie at the Bord-Aire Community Club. This movie (starring Reese
Witherspoon, rated PG-13) was released last year and tells the true story of four young Sudanese
refugees relocating to the United States by way of the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Our own shipment
to Kakuma arrived just last month! The Bord-Aire Community Club is only a few blocks from
the CLWR warehouse at 471 Hampton Street. Doors will open at 1:00pm, the movie starting a half
hour later, followed by a coffee & tea reception with guest speakers.
