identification numbers. Taking photographs,
videos or digital recordings of contents can
also help police and your insurance company if
there’s a break-in, fire, or flood.
• Double-check: Never drive away without
checking that your overhead garage door is
down. Also check the operation of automatic
doors once a month for safety (read your instruction booklet or contact the door’s manufacturer
for details).
For more tips on crime prevention, visit the Calgary Police Service website at www.calgarypolice.
ca.
Garages are a favourite target for burglars — they contain valuable items such as vehicles, garden tools and
bicycles, and they’re often left open and unattended.
The Calgary Police Service suggests these simple tips to
help prevent thefts from garages:
• Protect your valuables: Put curtains or blinds up to
cover any windows in the garage, so thieves can’t look
for items to steal, or see if your vehicle is there.
• Make it secure: The person-door between your house
and attached garage should swing inward into the garage, be solid core, and have a deadbolt lock. The same
goes for other exterior person-doors on your garage.
• Don’t give thieves an open invitation: Keep your
overhead door closed and your other garage doors
locked, even when you are at home — this includes
the door between your home and an attached garage.
• Check your locks: Secure your person-doors with
deadbolts (which need to be operated from the outside with a key).
• Make it bright: Install lights near your garage to keep
the area around doors and windows lit: These can be
motion sensor or photo (light) sensitive, so that they
turn on automatically when someone walks past or
when the sun sets.
• Put up a number: Put your house number on your
garage, especially if it opens up into a back alley. This
helps emergency personnel to identify which house is
yours.
• Keep records: Catalogue your garage’s contents, including serial numbers of valuable items and vehicle

Alberta Health Services, EMS would like to remind parents and children of some basic sledding safety tips as
the winter season continues. Sledding injuries can result
from collisions with stationary objects such as trees and
rocks or with other people on the hill. Unprotected falls
can result in injury if you lose control at high speeds. Everyone is at risk – especially children. Educate your family how to stay safe by following these simple reminders
and have a fun day on the toboggan hill.
Equipment
•Ensure your sled is in good condition. Do not use sleds
with broken parts, sharp edges, or splits in the material.
•Currently, there are no helmets designed specifically
for sledding. However children should wear a properly
fitted helmet designed for high impact collisions, such
as hockey, cycling, or climbing helmets.
Plan ahead
•Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes.
•Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to
exchange wet garments for dry ones.
•Take breaks to warm up out of the cold.
•Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin.
•Even when properly protected from the elements, the
finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other
high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek
bones can be affected by frostbite.
•If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the
individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm
the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it or
by placing the affected part in warm water (not hot;
~41°C max.) until re-warmed.
Hazards
•Avoid hills that are too steep, or too icy – you can lose
control very quickly.
•Choose hills free of obstacles such as trees, rocks, utility poles, or fences.
•Be mindful of clothing that contains drawstrings, or
loose clothing, such as scarves, which can present a
choking hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Reading Resolutions
Family Literacy Day, held annually on January 27,
was established 16 years ago to raise awareness of
the importance of reading together as a family. Created by ABC Life Literacy Canada, the literacy initiative encourages entire families to work together to
develop better reading and writing skills. Reading
together sets a good example for children, fosters
literacy skills in youngsters and keeps parents’ own
skills sharp.
Observing Family Literacy Day is only the first step.
Like anything else, becoming skilled at reading requires practice. So this year, why not resolve to make
family literacy a daily habit in your home?
Here are tips to make your family’s reading resolution a success:
•Set an example for your children – let them see you
read and hear you discuss what you have read
•Have lots of books in the house
•Set up cozy, well lit spaces for reading
•Give books as gifts
•Make regular trips to the library to stock up on
books for the whole family
•Encourage your children to read both fiction and
factual books
•Have your children read out loud to you and to lots
of other people too
•Encourage your children to read the words that surround them every day – store signs, roads signs, flyers, labels and recipes
Having your children read a book more than once
is a great way to boost their confidence in reading
and improve their speed. With a little imagination, a
little encouragement and a lot of everyday reading,
your whole family will help build their brains—and
bonds!

Dental Health
and
Your Pet
Jennifer L. Scott, D.V.M.
I see dental disease in almost every pet I examine in
my veterinary clinic. Unfortunately preventative dental care is not something that most pet owners start
early and continue daily. Does your pet have gleaming white teeth? What about his back molars? Are
they free of hard tartar? Are the gums a nice pink or
is there a line of hot red swollen inflammation along
the teeth? Put your nail against the edge of the gum
where it meets the tooth, does your pet wince and pull
away?
Dental disease is graded by veterinarians depending
on severity from grade 1 needing a simple cleaning
with some plaque and tartar to grade 4 with open
draining holes around rotten foul-smelling teeth and
gums. Pets are likely in constant pain with anything
beyond grade 2 dental disease. Taking care of your
pet’s teeth can be time-consuming and expensive.
Owners tend to ignore the teeth because they don’t
see them, but healthy teeth are directly linked to your
pet’s short and long-term well being.
Many people believe if they feed their pet a hard food
they will not get dental disease. The value of specialized diets and dental products is limited, but really, if
there was some magic component added to food that
eliminated dental disease, wouldn’t people be eating
it to avoid our own dental disease and the ensuing
costs.
A dog or cat, ideally, should have their teeth brushed
daily. Use a soft small tooth brush. Finger brushes
do not get under the gum line. Animal toothpastes
do not foam or contain sodium bicarbonate so they
can be swallowed. They come in flavors ranging from
tuna to chicken to beef. Yum, yum! Many of my clients
have even taught their pets to tolerate electric tooth
brushes.
A few pets will not allow brushing under any circumstance. These pets will derive some benefit from chewing products as well as a specialized dental diet. Some
22
enzymatic products even claim benefits if just sprayed
in the pet’s mouth, but none of these products outperform the physical action of daily tooth brushing.
Never give your pet hard bones, ice, and very hard
toys. Fractured crowns expose pulp and cause dental
abscesses that may require emergency surgery. Abscesses hurt.
Pets should have preventative cleanings as required
by the individual, but more often owners will only
agree if tartar, gingivitis, or periodontal disease becomes visually obvious. Cleaning and examination of
your pet’s teeth is done under a general anesthetic. No
self-respecting pet will tolerate a complete scaling and
polishing below the gum line awake. It is the area you
don’t see that typically the worse disease is brewing.
I recently did a dental cleaning of a young dog’s mouth
expecting no or little disease. Visual examination prior
to the cleaning everything looked good, but I discovered four deep pockets between the gums and four
teeth. Dental radiographs confirmed the bone around
the roots of the teeth was being eaten away by infection. The removal of diseased teeth allows a better
chance to keep the surrounding teeth healthy. This
disease would not have been discovered without a
proper examination of an anesthetized pet. Superficial
scraping of visual tartar only hides disease and lulls a
person into thinking their pet’s mouth is healthy.
Rotten teeth and gums can be a portal to bacteria
entering the blood stream and traveling through out
the pet’s body. Dental disease advances more quickly
when pets have other illnesses such as kidney disease
or diabetes, and dental disease can make other diseases more difficult to control. When the teeth hurt it
can also cause an otherwise sweet pet to become cantankerous. Our pets are living longer than ever with
advances in veterinary medicine and superior diets so
your pets are going to need those healthy teeth also
longer…start brushing early.

Kindergarten:
where your child’s talents
are treasured
Kindergarten is the start of an exciting adventure full
of promise for children and their families. We understand that children bring their own unique talents
and gifts to their learning experience, which is why
we personalize students’ learning to help them reach
their full potential.
In the early years, personalized attention can make a
meaningful difference in children’s lives.
From the very first day of kindergarten, our teachers
begin looking into the future to help children take
those next steps in their learning. We never lose sight
of our ultimate goal, which is for every student to
complete high school with a foundation of learning
necessary to thrive in life, work and continued learning.
For those children who don’t attend a preschool program, kindergarten will be their first introduction to
school. This first year will be filled with significant early experiences they will remember for a lifetime.
We are proud to be a part of creating those memories.
We are proud to provide learning as unique as every
student. Come learn with us!

THREE MILLION
LAKES
Canada has a lot of great things in abundance, like hockey players, parkas and Tim Hortons
franchises. But did you know we also have more lake area than any other country in the
world? It’s true. The Great White North has 563 lakes larger than 100 square kilometres. The
Great Lakes alone contain about 18 per cent of the world’s fresh lake water. That’s a lot of
water. Makes you wonder if all of our country’s allies are actually just thirsty.

Serving the communities of: Silverado, Chaparral, Cranston, Walden, Auburn Bay,
Copperfield, Mahogany, New Brighton, Shepard, Seton and Legacy
After parents, teachers are the single most important
contributor to student success. Outstanding educators
inspire students to reach their full potential both in
and out of the classroom.
Alberta’s Excellence in Teaching Awards has helped us
celebrate these phenomenal teachers and principals
for 27 years.
Alberta focused on fiscal restraint
Despite positive second quarter results, declining
oil prices require government to be diligent in fiscal
planning.
Second quarter fiscal results show a strong first six
months of the 2014-15 fiscal year; however, the ongoing decline in oil prices suggests this is not business
as usual and government will respond appropriately.
Second Quarter Results
The surplus for 2014-15 is now forecast at $933 million,
down from $1.1 billion forecast at budget.
The 2014-15 revenue forecast has been updated
to $45.0 billion, $637 million higher than originally
estimated at budget. Total expense is now forecast
at $44.1 billion, up $791 million from budget, mainly
due to higher capital grants, disaster and emergency
assistance and operating expense increases.
The capital plan is providing $7.3 billion for Alberta’s
infrastructure, a $673 million increase from budget,
primarily for additional school projects. Direct
borrowing for capital purposes is forecast at $2.2
billion, $2.7 billion lower than budget, due to improved
2013-14 results and cash from 2014-15 operations.
The revised revenue forecast is based on $75 US per
barrel for the remainder of the fiscal year. For the first
six months, WTI averaged $100.08 but with the recent
decline in energy prices is now forecast to average
$88.88 for the fiscal year.
Alberta’s economy continues to grow and real GDP is
still forecast to expand by 3.8 per cent in 2014. Record
numbers of people are migrating to the province and
Alberta continues to lead the provinces in job growth
this year, forecasted at 2.9 per cent for 2014 and 2.0 per
cent for 2015.
As your MLA, I invite you to recognize the dedicated,
creative and talented educators who inspire students
in our community. Nominate them for an Excellence
in Teaching Award and celebrate the positive impact
teachers and principals make in the lives of students.
And for the first time, nominations for pre-kindergarten
teachers will also be welcomed.
Approximately 130 semi-finalists will be selected
from the nominations received, and 20 teachers and
principals will receive Excellence in Teaching Awards.
Award winners will be presented with a certificate of
recognition and funding for professional learning.
Since the program began in 1989, more than 10,000
nominations have been submitted and more than
500 teachers and principals have received Excellence
in Teaching Awards. Add your favourite teacher or
principal to this growing list of exceptional educators
by
visiting
www.education.alberta.ca/teachers/
excellence.aspx. Nomination forms will be accepted
until February 6, 2015.
Together, we can recognize the excellent teachers
helping to prepare our children for success in their
future.
From my family to yours, I wish you a wonderful 2015.
I am privileged to serve as your MLA, and am always
happy to answer comments, questions and concerns.

The New Year is here. Here are some neat snack ideas for those
New Years or leftover holiday parties you may be attending.
HELLO DOLLIES
¼ cup butter or margarine melted in a 9x9 or 9x12 pan
1 cup fine graham cracker crumbs
1 cup desiccated or flaked coconut
1 cup chocolate or butterscotch chips
1 cup chopped nuts
1 can Eagle brand condensed milk
Arrange ingredients in layers over the melted butter in the
order noted above and without stirring. Bake at 325ºF for
30 minutes. Loosen edge. Cool in the pan. Cut into one inch
squares.
CULINARY FILE: new year snacks
CAULIFLOWER BUFFALO “WINGS”
1 medium head cauliflower, chopped into bite-size pieces
1/2 cup garbanzo bean flour
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon melted butter or ghee
2/3 cup hot sauce
Preheat oven to 450ºF. In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour,
water, garlic powder and salt. Whisk together until smooth.
Toss cauliflower into garbanzo batter, making sure to coat
each piece completely, then place battered cauliflower on a
lightly greased, non-stick baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes,
tossing halfway through.
In the meantime, combine melted butter and hot sauce in
a large bowl, regularly stirring. When cauliflower is done,
remove it from the oven and gently toss it in the hot sauce
mixture. Place cauliflower back on the baking sheet and cook
for an additional 25 minutes until it becomes crispy. Allow
cauliflower to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!

7 Helpful Tips for a
Good Night’s
Sleep
Does the recent time change have you feeling a little
groggy? As we re-adjust those sleeping patterns and
enter into the busy holiday season it’s important that
we don’t forget to make sleep a priority.
Did you know not getting enough sleep can make it
harder for you to lose or maintain weight? Lack of sleep
has been shown to increase your risk of developing high
blood pressure, diabetes and depression. At least seven
hours of sleep a night is recommended for adults.
Here are some helpful tips for a good night sleep:
•Keep your bedroom quiet, dark, and temperature-controlled at night and bright in the morning.
•Use your bed only for sleep i.e. no eating or working
in bed.
•Instead of watching TV, reduce overstimulation by
reading a book.
•Get up at the same time every day; this will help you
fall asleep right away every night.
•Even if you are tired, avoid afternoon naps. This will allow you to fall asleep quicker at night.
•Refrain from eating heavy meals or spicy foods two
hours before bedtime.
•Exercise regularly; this will help you become a “good
tired” at night.

Easy Plants for the Office
The short, dark days of winter don’t have to be dreary
– now is the time to celebrate the ‘indoor season’ with
some easy and favourite plants. Not all offices have ideal
light, but some plants can do very well under florescent
lighting for a long time. These popular houseplants will
transform your office from stark white to instantly appealing and comfortable. Each does well in low light or
under florescent lighting, but keep in mind that all plants
need some natural light to stay healthy and beautiful.

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
One of the best plants for removing formaldehyde released from carpet and other materials in our homes
and offices.
It likes bright indirect light; preferably a northern exposure. This plant is perfect for the office because does very
well under florescent lights.
Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron scandens) also
known as the Sweetheart Plant.
There are two kinds of philodendron, the upright and
the trailing. For the office I recommend the trailing variety. They don’t mind being kept in a small pot and they
are very lovely hanging in a north facing window or sitting on a bookshelf.
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
I have mine hanging over the hutch on my desk. It is
quite full and lush and has really cool spiderettes hanging down. They prefer natural but not direct sunlight.
Upright
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
This elegant plant is at the top of the list for removal
of toxins such as formaldehyde, ammonia and carbon
monoxide from indoor air. The foliage is attractive with
long dark-green, deeply veined leaves. It grows up to 3
feet tall and will do well in medium to low light.

Northern
Pygmy Owl
Small But Fierce
Article: Janis Turner
Photo: Dan Arndt
You can guess just by its name that the Northern Pygmy
Owl (Glaucidium gnoma) is very small, because that’s
what the word “pygmy” means. This little bird of prey is
just 16-19 cm tall and weighs between 48 – 60 g. Size
certainly doesn’t dictate how it lives as it hunts birds
and mammals much larger than it is. It has a small head,
stout and sturdy body, short rounded wings and a long
tail. Females are slightly larger than males.
This little owl is non-migratory (even in Alberta), and
lives in mature or second growth woodlands that have
open spaces (like meadows). You might see it perched
on a treetop, listening and looking for prey during the
day (although it will also hunt at night), or you might
hear it “tooting” to announce its territory.
The Northern Pygmy Owl is known for its feather markings. It is described as “earless” because it has no feather
tufts on its head. The bird has brown upper parts with
small light spots on the head, back and wings. The
male is greyish brown with fine white spots, the female
tends to be a darker brown. The under parts are white,
streaked with brown, and the brown tail is barred. The
beak and eyes are yellow. These little owls have markings called ‘false eyes’ that look like “eyes in the back of
their heads”. They are large black eye-spots bordered
with white, which help them look bigger than they are,
confusing predators and mobs of songbirds that might
otherwise attack. Sometimes they also try to conceal
themselves by erecting little feather tufts, compressing
their body feathers, and placing one wing across the
front of their body to blend into the woodland around
them. After all, when you are as small as a Pygmy Owl,
you can be prey as well as predator.
The Northern Pygmy Owl usually fly short distances,
from perch to perch, just above the ground with a low
rise and fall to their flight pattern. They hunt for small
to medium sized birds (waxwings to chickadees) and
small mammals (mice, moles, voles, chipmunks) and
sometimes insects, and even small reptiles and amphibians. These owls must hunt and feed throughout
the day in order to meet the needs of their small, but
high energy consuming bodies. They use a perch and
pounce technique when hunting, switching their tail
excitedly from side to side like a cat when focusing on
prey, then zig-zagging from branch to branch before
dropping straight down onto their prey. Prey is usually
carried off to feeding sites. They are able to carry prey
three times their own weight.
Northern Pygmy Owls are seasonally monogamous,
which means that they stick to one mate for the breeding season. They take over holes in trees made by
woodpeckers and northern flickers that they can move
into as nest sites. They raise 3 to 7 owlets after an egg
incubation period of about 4 weeks. The young are
hatched in one day, with the male bringing food to the
female and young. Soon the females start to forage for
food to help feed the young, and the pair will feed and
protect them until they fledge (3 to 4 weeks) and protect them for the same length of time after fledging.
What’s unusual about these owls is that they are noisy
flyers, not silent predators as you would expect. Because they don’t eat large amounts of feather, fur and
bones, their pellets are formed infrequently, are very
small (3 cm), and fall apart quickly after discharge.
If you find an injured or orphaned Northern Pygmy
Owl, or other wild bird or animal in distress, please
contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society for
further instructions 403-239-2488.
