PO Box 2 Thalawathugoda Sri Lanka tel/fax ++ 94 114 307 287 [email protected] Availability List 26 Jan 2015 Updated Time : 06:23 PM How to Use this List This list shows what varieties are currently available and at which sizes. It’s linked real-time to our database and is updated very frequently. If an item is listed here, it’s available for our Distributors to order but they may not necessarily have that item in stock right now. If you see something you’re interested in purchasing through your favoured Distributor, you can ask them to obtain it for you. Price Categories The price categories are broadly as follows: A = inexpensive items, usually in good supply and also easy to grow. B = medium priced items, either quite rare and new or sometimes less easy to grow/produce. C = high prices items, usually new introductions currently in very short supply, and/or difficult to grow/produce. The actual prices charged by individual Distributors are likely to follow the general categories above but they are not bound by any obligations on pricing and if you wish to judge whether the price charged by a Distributor for a particular item is fair, the best way may be to compare prices between them. In countries with several Distributors, they are in competition with one another. It’s worth bearing in mind that price may not be the only factor to consider in choosing which Distributor to order from. Each Distributor receives exactly the same standard of produce from us but their costs of sale may vary a great deal depending upon how they handle the plants after receiving them. Some may sell them on quickly, others may take a considerable time re-establishing them before reselling. The obvious advantages in establishing the plants may be offset by the necessity to charge a higher price. It’s a matter of your personal preference which Distributor you choose. We don ’t recommend one Distributor over another. Size Categories These are the size categories we use when shipping. Please note that the Distributors are free to use different criteria for deciding whether a plant is small, medium, large etc. Plant Sizes The size of plants is categorised by measurement across the leaf span from leaf-tip to leaf-tip of the largest two leaves, not including tendrils and pitchers, as shown in the photos below. Species have a minimum leaf span of 5cm (2") but some may be larger than this, up to a maximum of about 15cm (6") leaf span. Hybrids have a larger minimum leaf span than the species at 6.5cm (2.5”) but as with species, some may be larger than this, again up to a maximum of about 15cm (6") leaf span. We ship plants on a first-come-first-served basis, starting with the largest plants we have in stock and working downwards. If you are ordering plants from one of our Distributors, you can expect your plants to arrive either bare-rooted or potted Species Sizes Maximum Minimum Hybrid Sizes Minimum Maximum Nepenthes species Nepenthes albomarginata Slender graceful pitchers. The pitcher colourations vary but always have the characteristic white band below the peristome. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3004 Brunei, assorted clones Mostly with green pitchers. Random assortment from 24 clones. Climate : Intermediate Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: A lower pitchers Nepenthes boschiana Rare spectacular species from southern Borneo. Peristome is dark purple with elongate purple flecked pitchers. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3643 Mixed seeds & assorted clones from microprop. Although we have released seed-grown Nepenthes boschiana before under BE- 3361, that was a cross between the slightly different Gng Besar and Gng Sakumpang forms. Finally, we have flowered and crossed two plants from the same location - Gng Sakumpang - and this is that pure cross. For purists and conservation-minded people alike, this is an important step towards preserving the integrity of the form of the species from Gng Sakumpang in ex-situ conservation. Climate : Intermediate Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: C intermediate pitcher Nepenthes burkei Endemic to the island of Mindoro in the Philippines, this under-appreciated species is as easy to grow as Nepenthes ventricosa and an ideal beginners plant. We find the hard woody pitchers exceptionally attractive, being red flecked on a yellow/green background with lustrous scalloped peristome. If pruned back it will form dense clusters of basal growths and many pitchers, with it being rare to find a leaf not developing a pitcher. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3254 Halcon, assorted clones A random assortment from 5 clones. The true species at last! Typical of the species, this is our clone #12 out of microprop and is the genuine item, with even juvenile pitchers showing the characteristic tongue. It is also far less expensive than it used to be, thanks to the benefits of in-vitro propagation. Climate : Highland mature plant Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: B lower pitcher Nepenthes lowii This is a fabulous species with extremely tough purple/green pitchers, slow growing but highly rewarding, since few other species have such contrasting and unique upper and lower pitchers. Nepenthes lowii rarely develops strong root systems until the plants become quite mature, so for this reason we cannot guarantee that plants we sell will always have well developed root systems but the leaf canopy will be healthy and hard and they will be in active growth. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3100 Trusmadi, assorted clones Random assortment from 22 clones. From a single clone, nursery hardened, leaf canopy is about 2.5cm or 1" in diameter. Random assortment from 22 clones. Please note that it is a characteristic of this species that sometimes plants may have a healthy leaf canopy and pitchers and little or no root system. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3067 from a single clone This is the most spectacular form of Nepenthes maxima we know of which is why we use it extensively in our hybridising program. Red striped pitchers compliment a beautiful glossy red and burgundy peristome. It's also very fast and easy to grow. A most rewarding variety of the species for growers of all abilities. Climate : Highland Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: A lower pitcher upper pitchers Nepenthes mira An unusual species from Palawan which is closely related to N. rajah. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3123 assorted clones Red or dark pink bulbous pitchers. Random assortment from 24 clones. Climate : Highland Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: A lower pitcher Nepenthes palawanensis A new introduction from Borneo Exotics! Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3651 Mixed seeds & assorted clones from microprop. First introduced in January 2015. Plants are as yet too small to see much individual detail but are believed to be true to type. Climate : Highland Last Update : 26-Jan-2015 Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: B juvenile plant in 30cm pot juvenile pitcher 7 of 32 Nepenthes species Nepenthes peltata This easy to grow species is characterised by a peltate tendril attachment and conspicuous indumentum in mature specimens. The pitcher shape seems rather variable but is still not well recorded in habitat and rare in cultivation. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3464 From a single clone out of microprop. So far as we can tell at the time of writing (June 2012) this is the true species. The pitcher shape seems somewhat atypical judging from the few habitat photos available but so does the shape of the pitcher of the only other commercially available form from another producer. The plant certainly has plenty of indumentum on leaves, tendrils and stem but we can make no guarantees at this stage. Climate : Highland Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: B juvenile lower pitcher mature plant Nepenthes pervillei The only species known from the Seychelles, this beautiful plant is very rare in cultivation. It's renowned as a difficult grower and although it's supposed to be a lowland species, we've had most success in our highland nurseries. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3134 From a single clone. Small plants are about 5-8 cm (2-3") in diameter and are healthy, with many leaves but few pitchers. There is now no limitation on orders of this item. Climate : Intermediate Last Update : 26-Jan-2015 Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: B lower pitcher mature plant 8 of 32 Nepenthes species Nepenthes robcantleyi Some time back we bred two of the only nine plants known in cultivation of this, one of the rarest of all Nepenthes. The area where seed that gave rise to the original nine plants was collected was devastated by logging activities in the late 1990s and Nepenthes robcantleyi is believed to be either critically endangered, or possibly even extinct in the wild. The female parent of this release has the cultivar name ‘Queen of Hearts’, and is very probably the most photographed Nepenthes in history, having appeared on many of our gold medal winning Chelsea Flower show exhibits. The male parent named ‘King of Spades’ is darker in overall colouration than the ‘Queen of Hearts’ and has green peristome wings. For some years we labelled these plants as a form of Nepenthes truncata, although there were clearly striking taxonomical differences between them and the existing published description of Nepenthes truncata. In December 2011 Nepenthes robcantleyi was described in the Noridic Journal of Botany as a distinct species in its own right by Dr. Martin Cheek, a taxonomist with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The publication gives the history of this species in cultivation and the reason why the name Nepenthes robcantleyi was chosen. Some differences in pitcher colouration, morphology, plant vigour and size when mature, can be expected to appear between individuals, but so far we are seeing good uniformity amongst these plants which are all raised from a single grex of seeds. Cat.# Item Name Item Description BE-3561 Extra Large Size > 25.5cm (10") in dia. These are as for BE-3517, being a random assortment from 550 clones out of microprop but they are nearly mature, being what would have fallen under our old XL size category. These stunning specimens would be good for breeding purposes or for immediate use in exhibitions. All show the dark colouration that seems to be an invariable characteristic of the species. Most are so large that in order to get them into the box we have to ship with just one pitcher per plant. Climate : Highland Click on photo below to enlarge Price category: C large plant in 15cm pot sale quality plant in 30cm pot Nepenthes sibuyanensis Fascinating species with long burrowing tendrils bearing large pitchers with scalloped peristome.
