PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Happy New Year! It is great to see everyone healthy and rested after a long winter break. With term two up and rolling
at a typically brisk Osler pace, I have been thinking about the important of grit (and therefore courage) for achieveing
success. One definition of grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals (Duckworth et al., 2007). Students at
Osler are encouraged to try new things, face their fears and to not give up when things become challenging.
These quotes highlight the importance of overcoming fear and managing vulnerability.
“Grit is pushing beyond the platitudes, and finding authentic connections that will encourage you to embrace discomfort
and embark on a journey that always seeks to push you outside the box.” unknown
“Grit is staring down the barrel of the difficult and the unknown, rejecting the voices that say I’m not enough, and
pushing through anyway.” unknown
Often even extremely capable students may not try due to fear of failing, or may simply give up when things get difficultthis is possibly due (in part) to a lack of grit. We can encourage grit by reassuring students that it is better they take a
risk, try and experience failure instead of not trying at all. We need to teach them that there is much to learn when we
fail and that is often where the most growth is. I encourage you to work with your child(ren) and encourage them to
develop grit throughout term two. One great book on Grit is How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden
Power of Character by Paul Tough.
The rest of the newsletter has important information about what is happening at Osler this and next month. Please let
me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you around the school.
Sincerely, Shannon Burton

Term Goals. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol. 92(6),

OSLER THINKS
Our school goal is developing critical thinking.
Critical thinking is important for students to be
able to solve problems in a variety of situations.
Questioning is a key part of critical thinking. How
are you helping your child(ren)
develop their questioning
skills?
Page 3
•
•
•
Do you ask your child why they think one
way or another?
Do you encourage your child to give
reasons for their beliefs, and ideas?
Do you let your child try to solve his/her
problems before helping them?
find your MLA and in 10 seconds help BC put a
poverty reduction plan into action!
Please donate non perishable items between now
and February 6th. Boxes are located in classrooms
and in the main foyer of Osler School.
If you answered no to these questions and need
some tips on helping your children with
questioning, please come to see me, the
classroom teacher or our teacher librarian. The
staff at Osler are here to help!

HELP OSLER SUPPORT THE FOOD
BANK
The Osler students and staff are doing a food
bank drive for the greater Vancouver Food Bank.
Grade 7 MACC student, Julia Grabovac wrote this
to help the community learn a little about poverty
in Canada. “Poverty affects over 10% of British
Columbians, and yet, BC still does not have a
poverty reduction plan. Right now, BC is losing 8-9
billion dollars per year due to the costs of poverty.
Implementing a poverty reduction plan would only
cost 3-4 billion per year, saving 5 billion dollars
that could be spent on other pressing concerns,
such as healthcare and education. Many people
who live in poverty are working full-time, but are
only paid the minimum wage ($10.25 per hour),
which is not enough to raise them above the
poverty line, especially if they also have to support
a family. A poverty reduction plan could change
this all. In other provinces, it was community
pressure that forced the government to take
action. You can join BC’s effort to make our
government take action by asking your MLA to
commit to tackling poverty. Go to

LUNAR NEW YEAR
Lunar New Year this year is on Thursday February
19th, 2015. Many cultures celebrate the new year
on this day. Osler Elementary School will be
celebrating Lunar New Year on Friday February
20th, 2015.
I am looking for a committee of parents who
would like to help run some stations to share
Asian culture and traditions. The stations will be
from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the gym, and will
be followed by a lunchroom Lion Dance.
Please contact me at [email protected]
On February 20th, you can send your child to
school in traditional Asian clothing. Also send a
change of clothes in case they want to change
when they go outside at lunch.
We are looking forward to celebrating culture
together on Friday February 20th, 2015.

Sir William Osler’s Lunch Program
Term 2 – Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from January 29th to April 2nd
Hello Parents and Happy New Year!
It’s time to place your lunch orders for Term 2.
By purchasing lunches for your child(ren), you are helping to raise essential funds that allow us to purchase
necessary supplies, and to support the many programs at Sir William Osler Elementary school.
To place your order, please go to www.munchalunch.com/schools/osler and click on “Login Here” to login to
your existing account. If you have not yet set up an account, click on “Register Here” to create one.
ORDERING DETAILS:
Online ordering will be open on Monday, January 12th and will remain open until Monday, March 23rd.
Make sure to submit your order by January 19th to receive lunch for the first lunch date, January 29th.
All orders must allow for a 10-day processing period. What this means is you can order lunches at any
time; however, your order must be received and paid through MunchaLunch at least 10 days prior to
the lunch date.
We encourage and hope you will place all your lunch orders at one time. This will help save the OPG
additional credit card processing fees and per transaction fees.
Payment will only be accepted by Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal. MunchaLunch will redirect your
account to PayPal to process your payment. You do not need a PayPal account.
The day before each OPG Lunch Day, you will receive a reminder e-mail from MunchaLunch to confirm
your order. If you do not receive an e-mail, you did not order lunch for the following day.
There are no refunds for missed hot lunches due to school absences. You are welcome to pick-up your
child’s lunch, but we cannot keep it for them for the next day. Any excess balances are considered a
donation to the OPG.
Please print the attached calendar below to help record the lunches you order.
If you need assistance with your lunch order, do not have internet access, or if you have any questions,
