Family Literacy Olympics: March 4 Three –way conferences: March 26, 27 Cultural Potluck and Cultural Evening: April 23 3 Make Fire Safety Part of Your holiday Season Saskatoon Fire & Protective Services urges residents to keep fire safety in mind as they celebrate this festive season. Everything from dry Christmas trees to overloaded electrical circuits can pose a threat to your family’s safety. Please keep these fire safety tips in mind: Natural Christmas trees are a fire hazard if they are allowed to dry out. Choose a fresh tree, trim the trunk at an angle, and check the water reservoir daily to make sure your tree is receiving enough moisture. Set up your tree at a safe distance from curtains and heat sources such as vents, fireplaces and radiators. Make sure the tree is not set up in a place that will block an escape route from your home. Use outdoor lights outdoors only (the same applies to indoors). The lights should be in good repair. And always unplug Christmas lights before going to bed. Don’t hide extension cords under area rugs or coiled behind furniture. The heat generated by the electricity can burn through the insulated jacket and cause a fire. At the same time, care must be taken to place cords where people will not trip over them. Use fireplaces and wood burning stoves carefully. Burn only seasoned wood - not Christmas tree branches or wrapping paper. Never leave burning candles unattended. Careless use of candles is a leading cause of fire in Saskatoon. H I R A 1. A C S R Saskatoon Public Schools will require the use of helmets for students who are on ice during supervised non-instructional time. That is, use will be required during those times of the school day when students are normally supervised out-of-doors by a staff member or noon hour supervisor. In past years, we have required helmets to be used on the rink during physical education classes. This standard of care will now extend to the 15 minutes before school, recesses and during the lunch hour. All students using the rink at these times must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to play on the rink. 2. H O I P A S Our school division cares about the safety of your children while at school. One of the steps we regularly take is to review our division-wide safety practices to ensure we are following current, generally accepted safety measures. During our last review, we learned that it has become a generally accepted standard of care and safety across the province to require students to wear helmets when they are supervised on ice during instructional and non-instructional times. Therefore, as soon as our rink has been flooded this year, we will require helmets for students who are on the ice 15 minutes before school, at recesses and during the lunch hour. All students using the rink at these times must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to play on the rink. Your child’s teacher may be reinforcing the importance of helmets and the nature of brain injuries in the classroom. 3. H D H W ? When the head hits a hard surface, it stops moving very quickly. This can cause the brain to hit the inside of the skull, and can also damage the connections between brain cells. The surface of the head can also be cut or bruised, especially if it hits a sharp object. In severe cases, the skull may fracture. In general, helmets are designed to: help the head slow down more gradually, spread the impact over a larger area, and prevent direct impact to the skull. 4 Winter Weather Watch Saskatoon Public Schools' guidelines state that students will remain inside the school when the wind chill temperature is minus 27C. Red Light The wind chill temperature is minus 27C or colder. Students will be inside when they arrive at school and will stay inside for morning, afternoon and lunch recess. Yellow Light The wind chill temperature is minus 20 to minus 26C. Students are expected to dress warmly and go outside for fresh air. They can come in to the school to warm up in the boot room. It is expected that students who come in to warm up will sit quietly and then go outside after a few minutes. Green Light Until the wind chill temperature dips below minus 20, students are expected to play outside. Parents and students can help by: Posting the Winter Weather Watch information on your fridge and listening for the wind chill temperatures each day. Ensuring that appropriate clothing (mitts, toques, scarves, jackets, and boots) is worn to school. Staying active while outside!
