(Social Emotional Learning for Academic Success) week is 1/26-1/30. We want to spend some time each day emphasizing one of our monthly themes. Students will bring home a daily question related to a theme to engage their families in conversation. The next day classes will share a few of the student responses. Here are the questions that will be sent home: Monday … FRIENDSHIP—What makes a good friend? Tuesday …UNIQUE—What makes our family unique? Wednesday … COMPASSION—How does your family show compassion? Thursday …RESPECT—How do you show respect at home, at school, or in the community? Friday …COOPERATION—How do you cooperate with your family? A comprehensive FAQ is posted about this state test, which is replacing the ISAT. 1/21/2015 ILLINOIS 5ESSENTIALS SURVEY Our D181 schools are once again administering the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. Teachers, parents, and middle school students are being invited to take the 15-minute survey to help identify strengths and areas for improvement in our schools’ climate and learning conditions. The survey will be open January 12 through March 13. Families, students and applicable staff can access the survey online: https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois-pilot. FROM THE MRC Keyboarding Club will take place in January and February for students in Grades 25. The AimsWeb Early Literacy and Reading Assessments provide us with valuable information regarding development and progress in the area of reading. This is a standardized test administered to students across the nation. The measures are short one-minute snapshots of your child’s reading ability. This program is open to girls in grades 3-5 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are very excited that many of the girls are looking forward to participating this year. We anticipate the start date being near the end of February. As soon as we receive the start date and registration information from the Girls on the Run organization, we will send it out. ENGINEERING CLUB WITH LEGO® BRICKS AT WALKER ELEMENTARY STEM Based Motorized Model Building with Lego Bricks, Gears & Motors Jr. Engineering Club with LEGO® Bricks Winter Session: Wednesdays, January 28-March 4, 2015, 3:15-4:15pm (6 weeks) Spring Session: Wednesdays, March 11-April 22, 2015, 3:15-4:15pm (6 weeks – no class week of 3/30) Open to grades K -5 In our 6 week session students will experience hands-on engineering fundamentals as they build motorized models using LEGO® bricks, gears and motors! Our programs are built around proprietary model kits, plans and STEM curriculum, designed by teachers, architects and engineers. The activities are interactive, hands-on and engaging to promote learning in a fun way. We Learn – Fun and interactive teaching period We Build – Students will build a new project each week using LEGO® bricks We Play – Once the project is completed, students use the rest of their time to expand on their project and collaborate with one another All materials will be provided. At the end of the week session students will go home with a custom LEGO mini-figure!
