• The course is undertaken in the
following sequence:
• (a) first year is composed of seven arts
and one social work unit (48 points)
• (b) second year is composed of five arts
units and three social work units (48
points)

• (c) third year includes three arts units
(which complete the major sequence);
the rest are social work units (including
the first field education placement)
• (d) the final year is composed of social
work units only, including the second
field education placement.

For the Arts component :
• A major and minor study as follows:
• arts discipline major (48 points)
• arts discipline minor in a different area of
study (24 points)
• Additional arts elective units (18 points)
• All Social Work units are compulsory (96
points)
Psychology Major
• The APAC accredited psychology major
is available for students who wish to
complete a further two psychology units

Enrolment Limits
Full time students can enrol in four (six
point units) per semester.
Double weighted units are twelve points
and you will undertake several of these
in social work:
Critical Social Work 1( 12 points)
Supervised Professional Practice 1 and
2 are both 12 points
Critical Social Work 4 is 12 points.
Overloading
Students may not take more
than 24 points of study each
semester.
Overloading (exceeding the 24pt
limit) is restricted to students
who have completed at least one
year of university study and have
achieved at least a credit
average in the previous
academic year.

Internet Usage
• Approximately 1GB per semester is allocated to each
student
• This should be sufficient to meet the needs of your study
• Downloading which exceeds the allowance will be charged
to your account. Monitor your usage via the “Personal Info”
section on the My Monash Portal.
• Keep your User ID & Password safe - all Internet
transactions are recorded and can be traced to a User ID
• Internet use not directly related to your studies is not
permitted.
Supervised Professional Practice - Field
Education
• Supervised Professional PracticeField Education is part of your Social
Work program.
• All students undertake 1000 hours of
supervised field education placement
(500 hours first placement usually in
year 3 and second semester of your
degree and again in the 4th year of
your degree.
• Please note that in the third year
placements start in June- meaning no
semester break.
Working with Children Checks
• Students/staff at hospitals with
exposure to children are now
required to undergo a Department
of Justice check once every five
years.

• If you are participating in field
education placements you will
be required to undergo a police
check each year.
