Recap of Backhaul Usage Model
• Small cells are becoming increasingly important for
cellular and Wi-Fi [1].
• Requirements:

~ 2 Gbps peak per small-cell data rate
100 m – 150 m cell size
Latency: ~ 5 ms, one way, end-to-end.
Support for bursty traffic
• mmW backhaul enabled by 802.11ad/NG60:
• Leverage availability of low-cost chipsets, driven by volume (ABI
Research: 1.5 billion chipsets by 2018)

What does backhaul need from NG 60?
• Multi-hop capability.
• Existing 802.11ad specification may not be sufficient for extended
range applications.
• Enhanced QoS guarantees:
• Beyond current 802.11ad specification.
• Higher data rate
• Will be addressed by planned high-data rate enhancements
(MIMO, channel bonding, etc.). MU-MIMO may be beneficial as
well.
• Enhanced discovery methods for longer range
• Discovery range = Communication range.

Use cases enabled
• Solutions that meet the backhaul requirements will also
provide benefits to other use cases of interest:
• High-data-rate indoor applications [2], such as video streaming,
would benefit from extended range.
• Deployment of infrastructure NG60 APs would benefit from the
possibility of self-backhaul, leading to lower-cost.

Conclusions
• Support for backhaul in NG60 may require MAC only
or PHY/MAC enhancements to current 802.11ad.
• Support for backhaul in NG60 will enable new
deployment and use scenarios that may not be fully
served by 802.11ad.
• Support for backhaul is complementary to high-rate
enhancements such as MIMO, higher-order
constellation, channel bonding etc.
