Copy Textbook (Lenny’s Red Letter Day) – Chap – 3 & test pad page English Reading and Comprehension I. Read the passage carefully and answer in complete sentences I remember my early childhood years with much joy. I grew up in a large house with an even larger garden in Alternberg. My parents were supremely tolerant of my excessive love for animals. As a young toddler, I enjoyed stories of Mother Goose and I yearned to be a goose. On realizing that this was impossible, I desperately wanted to have one and when this also proved impossible, I settled for having domestic ducks. From a neighbor, I got a newly hatched duckling and found, to my great joy, that I followed me everywhere I went. As I cared for my duckling, my knowledge of waterfowl expanded and my interest grew. This was how I came to be very familiar with their behavior even as child. When I was about ten, I could read independently. I found a book entitled Evolution by Wilhelm Bolsche and it gave me the answer to a problem that had confounded me for some time. I had struggled with the issue of whether an earthworm was an insect. My father had explained that the word ‘insect’ was derived from the notches, or the ‘incisions’ between two segments. The notches in many insects and the notches on the worm were clearly similar. Was the earthworm, therefore, an insect? Evolution gave me the answer-if reptiles could become birds, it is possible that worms could develop into insects. That is when I decided to become a palaeontologist to study life in prehistoric times. At school, I made an important friend, Bernhard Hellmann. We became bosom friends as were both interested in water creatures. Fishing for ‘live food’ for our fishes, we discovered the richness of all that lives in a pond. We spent a great deal of time together helping each other with our individual experiments. This was how our friendship deepened over the years. On completing high school, I was still obsessed with evolution and wanted to study paleontology. However, as advised by my father, I studied medicine instead. It proved to be the best thing that happened to me. It was how I came to be a student of Ferdinand Hochstetter, a brilliant scientist. He helped me find answers to the many questions I had about evolution. Page 3 of 4 Later, when I had begun to study zoology at the zoological institute, I learnt about the work of other scientists. The turning point in my life occurred one day when my best friend Bernard came to visit me with a book entitled Die Vogel Mitteleuropas, by Oscar Heinroth. I realised that this writer knew things about animal behaviour that other scientists had ignored. This book inspired me to write mine. If not for it, the books I produced between 1927 and 1936 would never have been published and I would never have become well known in the scientific community. Q1. How did the writer’s parents react to his great love for animals? Q2. What unrealistic ambition did the writer have as a toddler? Q3. What does the word ‘confounded’ (line 12) mean? Q4. ……..‘it gave me the answer to a problem that had confounded me for some time.’(line 11-12). What problem was the writer referring to? Q5.What led the writer to conclude that an earthworm could be an insect? Q6. What three factors made the writer and Bernhard become close friends? Q7. ’It proved to be the best thing that happened to me.’ (line 26) What was the best thing that happened to the writer and why? Q8. According to the writer, if Bernhard had not given him the book to read, what would have been the outcome? Page 4 of 4
