1. Visit UNIST
Gamak Pond
UNIST Central Research Facilities(UCRF)
Long before UNIST Campus came about in this area,
a village called 'Gamakmotan' was here, with its name
derived from Gamak Pond which means ‘a pond with black
soil.’ With its surface area of 22,888㎡, Gamak Pond is
undoubtedly the center and the most remarkable landmark
on the campus that can be seen from any building on
campus. The view of the five fountains beautifully spouting
its energy into the sky is enough to catch the attention of
the by passers.
UNIST Central Research Facilities (UCRF) was
established in 2009 for the purpose of enhancing the
research abilities of UNIST through the sharing of
expensive equipment, the promotion of interdisciplinary
studies, and the establishment of a network of
professionals specialized in analysis and instrumentation.
The Garden of Nobel
The UCRF possesses facilities fundamental to academic
research including an analysis lab, clean room, machine
shop, enviromental analysis lab, UNIST - Olympus Biomed
Imaging Center(UOBC), In Vivo Research Center(IVRC)
and UNIST Radiation Safety Lab.

UCRF organizes the Review Committee of Equipment
Acquisition for effective equipment introduction and
utilization, and supports purchasing equipment approved
by the Review committee of Equipment Acquisition.
In the Garden of the Nobel, along Gamak Pond, there
are Monumental Planted Trees. The place which is for
commemorates Nobel prize winner's visits while providing
nice scenery and strong inspiration for the students and a
scenic resting place for anyone in the community. We are
eagerly looking forward to the day of our very UNISTARs
planting their monumental trees in the Garden of Nobel in
the future.
UNIST Supercomputing Center(USC)
The Nine Bridges
In its strive to build and eco-friendly campus, UNIST has
the natural waterways and has arranged main buildings
in a fan shape centering around Gamak Pond. 9 bridges
were built on a campus to preserve the small streams
flowing in out of the pond, called ‘The Nine Bridges.’ Each
bridge is yet left unnamed to be called after the future
Nobel prize winners arising from UNIST. It is our hope
that current UNISTARs who are working hard towards
their dreams as they cross ‘The Nine Bridges’ will come to
realize their dreams in the near future.
Library
The UNIST Library is a landmark site in UNIST which is
located in the center of the campus. The library is also the
best view in campus because of a great view of Gamak
pond.

UNIST Supercomputing Center(USC) was established
in March 2010 to lead the state-of-the-art research
using supercomputing technology. USC plays the
following four major roles. 1. "Leading Center for Stateof-the-Art Research", by integrating theoretical and
computational R&D capability, constructing infrastructure,
and leading creative, interdisciplinary, cutting-edge
research. 2. "Principle Network Center", as a principle
center for 'Partnership&Leadership for the nationwide
Supercomputing Infrastructure(PLSI)' and Ulsan
regional center for Korea Research Environment Open
Network(KREONET). 3. "Collaborating Center for
Research Institute&Companies", by collaborating and
developing design, analysis, and evaluation techniques
for products and manufacturing processes together with
companies, universities, and research institutes in the
Ulsan area using computing resources. 4. "Educational
Center for Specialists", by developing human resources
for computational research and supercomputing. By
playing the four roles, the USC now provides an excellent
environment for cutting-edge scientific researches not only
to UNIST members but also to local industry, research
institutes, and universities.

2. UNIST History
History and Mission of UNIST
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology nestles in Ulsan Metropolitan City, an industrial powerhouse of
South Korea and a home to the world's largest shipyard and automobile assembly, and the world's second largest
oil refinery. As an industrial heart of South Korea, there had always been a craving for talented engineers and
scientists who can achieve new growth through technology innovation and research.
With this backdrop, UNIST was founded and opened its door to 499 students in 2009. UNIST's mission is to
advance knowledge and educate students in the field of science and engineering to serve the nation and benefit the
humankind.
The incumbent president Mooje Cho, now serving his second term, envisioned a global leading research university
when he was sworn in as the very first president of UNIST. In order to make this dream come true, UNIST has
adopted many audacious approaches in education and research. 'Flipped learning' teaching method, English-only
lectures policy and mandatory double major system are some of the good examples of such efforts.
Thanks to its member's hard work and the innovative system, UNIST has produced substantial outcomes despite its
short history. In June of 2014, UNIST ranked 4th in NPI(Nature Publishing Index), a yardstick of research capability
among Korean institutes. Also, a technology transfer agreement for the second lithium-ion battery technology
developed by an UNIST professor was signed by a local company for 6 million US dollars, ranking one of the top
technology transfer deals that have been signed in Korea. UNIST has also successfully invited Institute for Basic
Science(IBS) to establish three research centers at UNIST, each of which will be funded with 10 million US dollars
per year for the maximum of 10 years by the government in an attempt to nurture future Nobel Prize laureate.
During the past five years, UNIST has attracted world-class faculty and top-caliber students from Korea and
overseas, and has built the state-of-the-art research facility. UNIST will not rest on its laurels, but will continue
to make a good use of these resources in order to carry out the institute's mission and become a global leading
research university.

3. The Undergraduate Program
U
NIST establishes unique undergraduate degree programs. All students must
choose two tracks (primary and secondary major) throughout their college years.
All freshmen learn the basics of sciences and mathematics without deciding their
majors. At the beginning of second year, students decide their majors. This unique system is
to promote creative thinkings and broad experience in related topics with a strong emphasis
on the solid and cutting-edge knowledge on the interdisciplinary study topics.
Undergraduates complete at least 135 credits in Engineering Field(134 in Business
Administration field) including major courses, internship programs, fundamentals,
interdisciplinary project, leadership programs, and English proficiency test score for
graduation.
Major Courses
There are 20 tracks in 9 schools at UNIST. Students must choose more than two tracks and
complete the requirement of each track for graduation.
Internship Programs
The programs are comprised of research internship, industry internship, and entrepreneur
internship. The research internship offers an opportunity to participate in a research with
world-class faculty members. The industry internship gives students the experience in
the industry field, a way to employment, and the opportunity to find their career. The
entrepreneur internship intends to educate undergraduate students regarding establish a
business, promote their interests and knowledge, and let them have an easier way to start a
business.
Fundamentals
The basics of mathematics, science, IT, and business administration are the fundamentals
of major courses. They will help students to study the major courses.
Interdisciplinary Project: Based upon the two tracks students have majored in for 4 years, a
new interdisciplinary project is launched. An additional study field may be newly applied to
the project. A novel and innovative project can be created by fusing a variety of fields.
Leadership Programs
The program is to build a sense of community spirit, teamwork, and global leadership with
various team activities, laying the groundwork for the humanistic education like an attitude of
self-sacrifice and service spirit. In addition, it assists students with future careers and goals
through career search.
English Proficiency Test
To acquire the certificaed English test score Such as TOEIC, TOEFL, and TEPS can raise
qualities as global talent. You can prepare for further study and employment.

4. Graduate Studies at UNIST
U
NIST Graduate School opened its door with 29 students in 2009, and 5 years later,
we have currently had a total enrollment of 775 in 18 departments and 21 majors.
To be a world-leading research university, we have been endeavoring by setting an
initiative and taking a step towards our dream. In particular, UNIST Multidisciplinary Institutes
(UMI) plays a key role in
undertaking convergence research and UNIST Center Research Facilities (UCRF) that has
cutting-edge research facilities supports professors and students for their research activities.
In addition, we provide all students with on-campus residence and RA/TA scholarships so
that they can focus on study and research without any financial burden.
Prestigious fellowships such as Global Ph.D. Fellowship and R&D Felllowship are also
designed for excellent students who will be educated as a world-renowned global leader in
science and technology.

Division of General Studies
School of Design and Human Engineering
Students enter UNIST into Science/Technology Group and Management Group. DGS is responsible for their
basic science and cultural education during their freshmen year. Upon completing freshmen curricula at DGS
successfully, students choose their special field (division/department/track) according to the UNIST regulation for
the next level education. DGS offers courses in Mathematics and basic sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) as
well as basic IT and management courses that would provide solid foundation for students when they study major
fields of their choice.
In order to cultivate a wide intellectual horizon, an innovative creativity, and a harmonious personality through
cooperative endeavor for each student we offer essential courses in Humanities, Social sciences, English, and
Arts.
The School of Design and Human Engineering focuses on theoretical and practical studies on innovative design
creation by investigating all aspects of product and product-service system development including needs finding,
strategy establishment, planning, conceptualization, analysis of human capabilities and limitations, system
integration, manufacturing and business implementation. DHE emphasizes synthetic thought processes that
require interdisciplinary and convergent knowledge from (but not limited to) art, engineering, humanities and
science. DHE provides two specialized tracks - Industrial Design and Human and Systems Engineering. A wide
range of curricula will help students become global experts making innovations with creativity in diverse areas
across design and engineering.

School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering

The School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering (MNE) consists of two tracks such as Mechanical Engineering
(MEN) and Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE). The MNE focuses on world-class research and education
in order to nurture creative experts and scholars who can contribute to the development and advancement
of cutting-edge industries. With the state-of-the-art facilities, the combination of traditional engineering and
IT, and interdisciplinary approaches, the MNE concentrates on a variety of research fields, including design,
manufacturing, system analysis, energy, unmanned vehicles, sensors for IoT, materials for extreme environments,
nuclear reactions, nuclear fuels and nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear fuel cladding and structural materials, nuclear
reactor/system thermal-hydraulics and safety, nuclear radiation, waste disposal, and many nuclear applications.
Although the MNE provides two disciplines with students it together emphasizes the creativity and ingenuity of the
education.

School of Urban and Environmental Engineering

Environmental pollution and climate change caused by industrialization and urbanization are directly related
to the survival of human society. With no surprise, studies on these issues are gaining in importance. Urban
and environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary research field focusing on environmental protection and
sustainable urban development with ultimately aiming toward the improvement of human welfare. In this division,
students will gain fundamental knowledge related to urban and environmental issues, and will study more
advanced courses represented by three tracks: Environmental Science and Engineering (environmental analysis,
water and air treatment, climate change, global environment, environmental modeling), Urban Infrastructure
Engineering (urban planning, structural mechanics and design, health monitoring, construction materials),
and Disaster Management Engineering. The School of Urban and Environmental Engineering is committed to
developing innovative technologies in the fields of urban and environmental engineering and educating leaders
who will have a large impact on our profession and society.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field which emphasizes the study of
processing-structure-property relations in materials. In order to develop new materials and find their applications,
it is important to understand the fundamental relationship between the structure, processing and properties. The
School of Materials Science and Engineering covers conventional materials to most advanced materials including
nano materials and beyond.

The School of Energy and Chemical Engineering was designed for an emerging field combining chemical
engineering principles with research about energy conversion and storage. Students can learn fundamental

challenging issues of the 21st century. The field of Energy and Chemical Engineering encompasses a wide range
of interests including green chemical processes, chemical engineering, advanced materials, and energy conversion

The school of electrical and computer engineering at UNIST is dedicated to educating students in interdisciplinary
scholarship that will serve for our future society. Our teaching and research take places in interdisciplinary

enabling technologies for the future way of life through the convergence of electrical and computer engineering

School of Natural Science

Natural Science strives to improve the quality of human life through finding and understanding basic rules in nature.
Historically, the convergence of basic science and engineering has been a key process for the advance of human
civilization. We believe that the systematic interdisciplinary research between natural science and engineering will
be able to speed up the convergence of these two disciplines and UNIST proudly provides an unprecedented and
unique education system in Korea for this purpose. All the faculty members in School of Natural Science are jointly
appointed to engineering divisions and they recruit graduate students, fellows, and postdocs from both engineering
and natural science backgrounds such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Thanks to this interdisciplinary
system, all the researchers are systematically trained and naturally mingle in the environment of convergent
research. From a practical point of view, such experiences with people from various backgrounds will be a big

ith a strong emphasis on research, many of UNIST's professors and their
laboratories have published in the top scientific journals, including Nature,
Science, and Cell. UNIST ranked in the top 5 Korean Universities for the first time
since its opening 5 years ago, according to the Nature Publishing Index(NPI) Asia-Pacific
2014.
Each professor belongs to at least two different schools at UNIST, encouraging them and

7. UNIST Research and Innovation

NIST is making outstanding research achievements through organic cooperation and close networks
among track-oriented convergence undergraduate programs, research & educational graduate programs
of convergent academic systems, UNIST Multidisciplinary Institute(UMI) and UNIST Central Research
Facilities(UCRF)
There are more than 770 externally sponsored projects throughout UNIST, with the total budget for sponsored
projects at $78 million during 2013-14. Of these projects, the government sponsors approximately 84 percent. In
addition, nearly $12 million in support comes from non government funding sources.
IBS Campus Research Centers at UNIST
* The Institute for Basic Science(IBS) will serve as a model of Korean scientific excellence to join the ranks of the world's
leading institutes in basic science research.
Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (Director Rodney S. Ruoff)
The goals of the Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM) include making entirely new classes of
carbon and related materials, and characterizing their structure, physical and chemical properties.
Center for Soft and Living Matter(Director Steve Granick) the subjects encompass the chemistry and physics
of biomolecular science; the intellectual complexity of complex materials; the puzzles of understanding structure
and dynamical processes of matter far from equilibrium.
Center for Genomic Integrity(Director Kyungjae Myung) studies the molecular mechanism of DNA repair
pathways that are important to conserve genetic information in biological systems.
Research Centers at UNIST
KIER-UNIST Advanced Center for Energy aims to work collaboratively and to generate synergy between the
original technology of UNIST and the system technology of KIER, in order to develop the next generation of battery
technology and to achieve industrial core technology.
Hans Schőler Stem Cell Research Center is the first iPS research center in Korea. In 2012 January, HSSCRC
was appointed as Max Planck Partner Group among other international research teams and many joint
research projects are being conducted with MPI-MBM. We aim to understand how stem cells differentiate and
pathomechanisms of disease models generated using patient-specific stem cells.
Center for Battery materials for mobile IT devices is dedicated to development of next generation battery
materials eligible for applying to mobile electronics.
Fusion Plasma Stability and Confinement Center will challenge unresolved physics problems in stability and
confinement area with the advanced 2D/3D plasma imaging diagnostics in two fusion plasma devices, KSTAR,
Korea and WEST, France.
Green Energy Materials Development Center is targeting to develop the high capacity and high energy lithiumion anode and cathode materials for Li-ion batteries to be implanted for usage of long driving distance electrical
vehicles for ~ 300 km.
Organic light-emiting display (OLED) Research Center is comprised of 4 divisions; Circuit division, Material
division, Device division and Human engineering and design division. Those researches are interacted with each
other and progressed researching on OLED efficiently.
Center for Superfunctional Materials focuses on the theoretical design and experimental development of
novel functional molecular/material systems and molecular/nano devices through the understanding of molecular
properties/mechanisms/assemblies and the elucidation of electronic/spintronic transport properties of matterphoton/electron interactions.
Catalytic Research Center the mission is the promotion of fundamental research for developing new catalysts,
new catalytic reactions, and new catalytic technologies.
Industrial-IT Convergence Technology Research Center is a base institute of source technology industrialization
that aims to be the world’s best education center for professional IT convergence technology training.
KIST-UNIST Ulsan Center for Convergent Materials was founded in september 2012 based on funding from
UNIST, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and KIST with missions of developing convergent materials and their application
into energy and environmental technologies.
Future Nuclear Environmental Safety Center (FNESC) FNESC addresses environmental radiation monitoring
and analysis, radiation public health, safety of radiation environment, advanced environmental radioactivity analysis
technologies including the development of the nuclide recognizing prompt radiation distribution monitoring system.
BK21Plus, META-material-based Energy Harvest and Storage Technologies
focuses on developing novel materials for future energy and energy devices based on the materials, producing
creative and well trained manpower for our societies.

7. UNIST Research and Innovation
BK21 Plus, Strategic program of interdisciplinary human & systems engineering for technologically driven
human-centered factories of the future Human & Systems Engineer education program aims to produce
top-level engineers who can lead the innovation of manufacturing processes and environments by integrating
contemporary technologies and knowledges in human factors engineering and systems engineering.
Center for aging dynamics conducts multidisciplinary research to understanding molecular and cellular
mechanisms underlying development and ageing. Furthermore, we aim to develop therapies to prevent or halt
neurological disorders and other aged-related diseases.
The Genomics Institute is to build Korean reference genome maps, collecting Korean/Asian genetic diversity data
called “variome, and their applications into bio-medical technologies. The aim of the center is to provide the most
accurate and precise genome data references to lay the foundation of Korea’s bioindustry.
Center for A2 (Advanced Analytics) focuses on the development of innovative analysis methods and the
cultivation of analytic professionals in Big data era. Our strategic focuses are analytics for manufacturing and
healthcare. The center emphasizes on active collaborations with industries and amis to contribute enhancement of
industrial competitiveness in the country.
Center for Global Energy Trading & Finance is trying to role of the Brain Tower for the successive establishment
of the Northeast Asian Oil Hub. The center educates to bring up professionals for energy trading/finance and
researches to activate local oil market.
Center for Entrepreneurship Education(CE2) aims to support integrated curriculum of entrepreneurship
education for science, engineering, design and management students. Additionally, it operates UNIST startup
project in conjunction with Venture Internship.
Center for promotion of Academic-Industry fusion area participates in cultivating facilities for Industry-Academic
Cluster, which will be located in Ulsan Technopark Complex in Ulsan. The Center has been also operated a variety
of industry-academic cooperation programs in order to develop its local community.
Center for GEV creates the global brand of UNIST in its unique technology through the research and development
of core technology in green electric vehicle. In addition, the center cultivates talented individuals of research and
development for green electric vehicle by providing hands-on education as well as getting students involved with.
Center for Nano-convergent bioimaging is developing new in vivo imaging biomarkers for translational
applications.
Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy System focuses its research on the theoretical and experimental
approaches to develop the safe and economic nuclear systems as well as to establish the advanced science and
technology for future nuclear systems.
Converging Research Center Innovative Battery Technology focuses on the application of scientific principles
to design and fabricate novel next generation battery system.
Center for Advanced Pseudo-satellite is aiming for developing hybrid MEMS or NANO sensors for detecting
airborne viruses or toxic gases for (biological/chemical) disaster monitoring. The center will also develop a small
unmanned aerial vehicle with the sensors installed towards quick and robust monitoring as well as a disasterhandling robot. The research on the scenarios of the disaster will also be conducted.

Low Dimensional Carbon Materials Center consists of more than 20 faculty members. The center, as a model
of industry-academy-government joint cooperation, will create new growth engine of Ulsan in the fields of fine
chemical and automobile.
Center for Cell to Cell Communication in Cancers is one of the leading cancer research center in Korea and
made up of diverse groups of specialists for a cooperative research with focus on cell to cell communication
networks.
Technology Licensing
In 2009-2013, UNIST generated 281 patent applications and 80 patent registrations in domestic and overseas,
which show significant increases annually.
In 2010-2013, UNIST received more than $1.3 billion in gross revenue from 12 technologies. In 2013, there was
an increase of 250% in number of technology licensing and 4,100% in revenue compared to the previous year.

T
he UNIST Library is one of UNIST research infrastructures which provides academic materials and
information services to support the UNIST's vision and goals. The library is located in the center of the
campus with great view of Gamak pond. From the first floor to forth floor, the library has an ideal environment
to use various types of materials and do individual and group study.
The library has about 190,000 volumes of print and electronic books, more than 10,000 electronic journals and 26
databases in Science and Technology. The library also provides library instructions and 'Subject Guides' to support
UNIST member's learning and research activities.
The UNIST library has an institutional repository 'ScholarWorks@UNIST(http://scholarworks.unist.ac.kr/)' which is
an organized collection of research results published in UNIST to share and proliferate research performance on
the Web. The library also has a research information manage system 'myARICLEs' to collect and manage research
performance in UNIST. In 2014, the system contains about 4,500 data and it is used to analyze and evaluate
UNIST's research performance.

9. Student Life
Student Organizations
There are about 13 organized student body and 53 registered clubs at UNIST. The Student Union of UNIST is the
representative government for UNIST undergraduates, and UISO is working for the UNIST international student
welfare and assists UNIST in communicate with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. UNIST Clubs are
voluntary creations of students from all fields and majors. Clubs have attained extraordinary achievements in offcampus events through their special organizational power and impetus.
Tradition
Freshmen Orientation UNSIT carries out programs for freshmen to plan their scholarly life and socialize with one
another, sharing common interests.
10. Cardinal Athletics
S
triving to cultivate global leaders with knowledge, virtue and physical fitness, UNIST puts emphasis on
building up of student’s upright characters and physical strength along with strong academia.
UNIST actively supports and encourages students to participate in various sports activities. Specifically, expenses
for student club operation, various competition entry fees, and the cost for sports goods and facilities installation
are supported by UNIST from 30% to 100% accordingly.
UNIST is equipped with two soccer fields, eight tennis courts, four outdoor basketball courts, a volleyball court and
a tracking course. Other on-campus sports facilities include a gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness center, indoor
driving range, dance studio and GX room. Outside of the campus, UNIST rowing training center and various sports
facilities are available with the support of local community.
Spring Festival & Autumn Academic Festival Students can express their youth, passion, and vitality at the
festival, briefly escaping the daily life grind with a chance to relax and let off steam. The festival engages the local
community by hosting various cultural events and promoting student creativity.
About eighteen sports clubs and numerous small sports groups for rowing, soccer, basketball, baseball,
badminton, tennis have students briskly working in their respective teams. In addition, UNIST does support outside
sports activities that are not feasible on campus such as skin-scuba, yacht, and skiing in order to give students
access to variety of sports.
UNISTADIUM UNIST Athleticcompetition is held among engineering universities such as UNIST, KAIST, POSTECH
and GIST. The competition comprises soccer and basketball games, with players and cheering squads from each
university visiting UNIST.
With school’s active support and growing number of participation in the competitions, UNIST is becoming
distinguished with its excellence in both academics and sports. High level of achievement is being gradually noted
from the winning of the rowing competition and in other areas.
UNIST holds intramural sports league every semester and regularly plays with the teams from domestic prestigious
universities such as KAIST, POSTECH and Seoul National University. UNIST plans to increase not only study
exchange but also sports exchange with foreign prestigious universities in the future.

ur ancestors, regarded the positioning of natural environment very important and, considered the mountain
in north and the river on the south as the optimal arrangement, believing in the symbol and the power of
soil and ground according to “Baesanimsoo.” UNIST stands on a basin surrounded by the mountains which
beautifully offers an open view to the east. Taehwa River, located on the east of the campus, allows a rich body
of water such as Gamak and Banyeon streams to flow across the campus and form Gamak Pond. Centering the
pond, both the east and the west are covered with the valleys which stand to surround the basin. While establishing
a symbol of science and technology, UNIST campus strives to treasure the harmony with the nature by forming an
eco-friendly campus rather than developing an artificial environment.

n 2014, UNIST is a 152,677,000 enterprise. This figure represents the university's consolidated budget. It does
not include the budget for the AIRC(Academy-Industry Research Corporation). Major sources of funds are
transferred money and tuition fee. Main expenditures are assets purchase, scholarship and labor costs.
NIST is Korea's first incorporated national university, which adopted performance-based and corporation-like
management system with greater autonomy, enabling its agility to deal with a constantly changing outside
environment and remain competitive in the fierce global competition. Under the Act on Establishment and
