Heinz site...
One of the greatest spiritual resources we have in our faith tradition is a “Retreat”. I am aware that
people go on retreats for business purposes as well. But in our Christian/Catholic tradition “Retreats”
are a wonderful and very impactful way for us to renew and strengthen our faith. This is not just my
opinion; there are data that tell us that for many people, going on a retreat has been the most significant way to have an experience of God. Pope Benedict and Pope Francis have both told us that
people need to have an experience of the “Risen Christ”. Retreats help people to have these experiences. I absolutely agree with this. Every year for over thirty years now I have gone on a silent directed retreat lasting at least one week and sometimes as long as eight days. One year I went on a
thirty-day silent directed retreat and it was a life-changing experience for me. There are not a lot of
people who can take one month or one week from their schedule of family and/or work and go on a
retreat. But it was an amazing gift for me and for others who have done it.
There are other types of retreats that don’t take 30 days or one week. This very weekend we have
about 25 women from St. Norbert on a Renewal weekend (retreat) called Christ Renews His Parish
or CRHP at Techny Towers. This weekend is being directed by other women who have already
been through the weekend last year. This past November we had about 20 men go through the
same weekend for men. It was a very prayerful and uplifting experience for all the men who attended
and I expect this weekend will be equally enriching for the women.
Another type of a retreat is a silent-preached retreat like they hold at St. Robert Bellarmine Retreat
House in Barrington. These retreats go from Friday evening to early Sunday afternoon. The meals
are great, the talks are very good, the accommodations are adequate and the result is faith enrichment. There are many ways to describe a weekend like this but I like to say it is a weekend of letting
God speak words of love to you. With the busyness of our lives we do not let that happen too often.
Men and women from St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook have a history of attending retreats at
Bellarmine Retreat house. In fact, in the coming months there are already men and women from
both parishes signed up to attend a retreat at Bellarmine. You may want to consider giving yourself
this gift.

Another weekend that is a retreat-like experience is called, “Light of the World Parish Retreat”.
Mrs. Emilia Yosick has been on this weekend and speaks very highly of it. As Catholics we are all
called to evangelize and that is what this weekend is about. It is not only enriching your relationship
with God but it moves you to do something about it in the world.

“Bulletin Building Blocks” - 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled OI (for Oleum Infirmarum), is often reserved with chrism and the oil of catechumens in an ambry. An ambry is a cabinet, often beautifully ornamented and kept near the baptistery in the church. Olive
oil, with no fragrance added, is blessed at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week by the bishop, although there is now a provision for a priest to bless oil if none is available. This restores to our Latin Rite practice a tradition never lost in the Eastern tradition, in which priests consecrate the oil of the sick, even at the sick person’s home. Any vegetable oil may be
used now, since olive oil is difficult to obtain in some places. Many priests keep a small supply of oil close at hand in a
small metal tube called a “stock.”
In the former rite, every sense of the body was anointed, accompanied by a prayer for forgiveness of sin. So, the
eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands, and feet were all touched. Today, this is simplified to an anointing of the forehead and
the hands, but generally today the oil is used more lavishly, and the symbolism of touch so central to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest will invite everyone present to join in the “laying on of hands.” Sick persons are often pushed
aside or feared in our culture, and to be reverently touched in love can be a profound experience of God’s healing, forgiving, accepting presence through the ministry of the Church.

2015 Annual Catholic Appeal
“Entrusted with Responsibility”
Please spend some time this week reflecting on
the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you
received with your bulletin. Please remember that
the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different
than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge
campaign where you can make a gift payable in
installments.
As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all
that you have. With these gifts, you are entrusted
with responsibility. Your gifts to our parish, to
the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church
throughout the world should be given in gratitude
for the continuing gifts that God gives you.
Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of
many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed
ministries and services. Our combined gifts not
only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a
significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese.
After our parish goal of $23,800 is reached in
cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to
our parish to help to fund our needs.
If you received your pledge form in the mail,
please complete it and mail it back or bring it to
Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not
receive a mailing or have not had time to respond
to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process
at all Masses next weekend.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
“To grow in discipleship throughout life, all believers need and are called to build a vibrant parish and diocesan communities of faith and service.
Such communities cannot exist without a strong, complete, and systematic catechesis for all its members. By
‘complete and systematic’ we mean a catechesis that nurtures a profound, lifelong conversion of the whole
person and sets forth a comprehensive, contemporary synthesis of the faith” (Our Hearts Were Burning
Within Us, the Bishops’ pastoral plan for adult faith formation)
Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, our parish mission, and our speaker’ series, as well as on-going
scripture and catechetical study.
Winter Ordinary Time –
Our Sunday Scripture reflection “Who Do You Say that I Am?” led by Dcn Dennis McAllister will continue on
the first and second Sundays of each month at a new time and place: right after the 10:00AM Mass at
11:30PM in the Library of the religious education wing.
Our adult faith formation offering is Fr. Robert Barron’s Untold Blessings: Three Paths to Holiness. Sessions
are on Thursdays, at 9:15AM in the Mother Cabrini Room. All are welcome.
Lent-Easter Season -As with winter Ordinary time, we were looking at a variety of possibilities.Fr. Bob has asked that we read
Pope Francis’ The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium). This Apostolic Exhortation is his vision of how we
are to be a church of witness and mercy. Sessions begin on Thursday, February 26, and will run to May 28,
at 9:15AM and 7:00PM in the Mother Cabrini Room.
This year the Bellarmine men’s retreat is the weekend of April 17-19 and the women’s retreat is the weekend
of May 1-3. We will have more information on this coming out soon.
There are other weekend options available, if these weekend dates do not work for you here are some alternatives: Men’s Retreats -- Feb. 20-22, Feb 27-Mar 1,

Religious Education & Youth Ministry
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade
5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the
Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people.
3rd Gr. Grade Level Mass
Sunday, February 15th is a grade level mass for all the 3rd graders at the 9:30am mass at St Norbert. At all the grade
level masses, students and families worship, sing and pray in the company of the parish community. Students process
in during the opening procession and donated items are presented as part of the Offertory. Our students are asked to
bring canned goods or non-perishable food items. Please plan to join this and all these special liturgies.
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
There is First Reconciliation for all second graders this Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:00pm in SN church. The first communicant and a parent are to attend this simple service initiating the children into this blessed sacrament of forgiveness.
SOUP AND STATIONS
AT OUR LADY OF THE BROOK
We will once again be offering a simple supper of soup and bread before the Stations of the Cross each
Friday of Lent. Soup will be served at 6 pm, and Stations begin at 7 pm.
We are looking for volunteers from OLB groups/ministries and all parishioners to provide the soup that
will be served each week. Soup should be meatless. Each offering should serve 8-10 people.

Lenten Regulations
During this Lent, the Holy Father has called on us to rediscover the “value and meaning” of fasting in solidarity with the poor
and hungry around the world. Fasting and almsgiving — donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of
charity — are two of the three pillars of Lenten practice. Our special focus on these aspects of Christian living during Lent helps
us to develop a state of interior penance. At all times, Christian living requires us to follow the teaching and example of Christ,
the commandments, the precepts of the Catholic Church and its principles of moral life which are explored in this section.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who
have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal.
Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have
reached their 14th year.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to
honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more
readily his Resurrection.
Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year.
