Counter Resolution Less Chaos - More Calm Dr. Clayton Oliphint, Sr. Pastor February 1, 2015 Please silence cell phones as we prepare our hearts for worship. 8:45 9:45 11:00 *indicates the people standing Prelude Jubilation Fred Gramann Bells of Bronze; Elizabeth Garvin, Cathy Herring and Kathleen Parsons, directors Greeting Dr. Clayton Oliphint This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. *Hymn 111 How Can We Name a Love (Stanzas 1-3) Time of Prayer Rev. April Johnson Bristow Offering Our Gifts to God (Remember the Extra Dollar) Offertory Music (8:45) Wings of the Dawn Linda A. Spencer The Journey Youth Choir; Caitlin Wells, director O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit and when I rise. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I go from your presence? If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, Even there your hand will guide me. Your right hand will hold me fast. If I say surely darkness will hide me, and the light be dark around me, Not even dark is dark to you. Night will shine like the day. So I’ll praise you, lift up my voice and I’ll praise you, Lord, Father I praise you, my Lord, yes I’ll praise you, Lord. You created me within, You knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you for I am fearfully made. Your works are wonderful. (9:45 & 11:00) Peace Like a River arr. Mack Wilberg Chancel Choir; directed by Michael Lightfoot I’ve got peace like a river in my soul. I’ve got faith like a river in my soul. I’ve got hope like a river in my soul. I’ve got love like a river in my soul. I’ve got faith like a river, I’ve got hope like a river, I’ve got love like a river in my soul. Peace in my soul. Sermon Counter Resolution: Less Chaos - More Calm Invitation to Holy Communion John 4 Dr. Oliphint Rev. Scot Bontrager (8:45) Rev. David Scroggin (9:45) Julie Klossner (11:00) Prayer of Confession God who creates order out of chaos, we confess that sometimes our world seems out of control. We have filled our lives with so many things that there is scarcely room left for each other and for you. Slow us down. Forgive our busyness which destroys our openness, our preoccupation which distracts us from the movement of your Spirit, and our self-absorption which dulls us to the cries of our neighbors. Breathe into us your calm spirit. Help us to trust you with all the details of life and find your steadfast grace to be all we need. Guide us, holy One. Amen. Words of Assurance The One whose light illuminates our defects and flaws is the same One who died regardless of them. “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Glory be to God. Amen. Blessing of the Elements Rev. Fred Treviño (8:45) Rev. Marilyn Dickson (9:45) Rev. Debra Hobbs Mason (11:00) The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving of the Bread and Cup (Rice flour communion wafers will be available for those with gluten intolerance.) As you come to the altar for Communion, please bring your commitment card and place in one of the baskets at the front of the aisles.
