It also comes from smoke exhaled from the smoker. Each year secondhand smoke causes about 46,000 deaths to nonsmokers from heart disease and 3,000 deaths from lung cancer. Children living in households where adults smoke are at high risk of exposure to secondhand smoke. Parents who smoke provide almost 90 percent of a child’s exposure to secondhand smoke. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). They also have more health problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and ear infections. Children living in households where adults smoke are hospitalized more than children living in smoke-free homes. With 28.9 percent of adults smoking (based on a 2009 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Kentucky outranks most other U.S. states for smoking prevalence. For this reason, a coalition of Kentucky hospitals and community organizations, led by UK HealthCare, UK Markey Cancer Center and Kentucky Children’s Hospital, is working to educate Kentuckians about the health risks of secondhand smoke and how to avoid or minimize exposure. Two brochures are available. Secondhand Smoke discusses the risks of exposure, and Tips for Avoiding Secondhand Smoke provides a variety of actions you can take to minimize or avoid exposure. Secondhand smoke campaign materials can requested by calling 859-257-1000 or 1-800-333-8874 (toll free). Information can also be found at www.takeitoutside.org. Saddle Up SAFELY Horse riding and handling injuries are more common than most people think. While novice riders and children are more likely to be injured, even instructor-level riders have an almost 40 percent chance of being seriously injured in their lifetimes. To reduce the number and severity of injuries, a coalition of more than 30 medical and horse-related organizations led by UK HealthCare and the UK College of Agriculture Equine Initiative have embarked on a campaign to educate the horse-riding community about safety. The Saddle Up SAFELY campaign is based on studies that show that 40 to 60 percent of injured riders report that their injuries were preventable and due to rider error. Resources available include three booklets – Horseback Riding Safety, Horse Transmitted Diseases and Horse Riding Injuries. To request copies, call 859-257-1000 or 1-800-333-8874, or visit SaddleUpSAFELY.org to download a printable pdf. Also at SaddleUpSAFELY.org is an ever-growing list of safety tips shared by riders around the world, as well as columns by experts and a blog by Dr. Fernanda Camarga. 58 If you’ve found this guide helpful, please recommend it to a friend.
