Journal of Ophthalmology
Special Issue on
Photoreceptor Degeneration and Regeneration
CALL FOR PAPERS
Photoreceptor degeneration is the common outcome of many retinal degenerative
diseases including retinitis pigmentosa leading to severe loss of vision. Many
studies have been conducted for the purpose of understanding the mechanism
of degeneration and protecting the photoreceptor cells by using animal models.
However, the in-depth molecular mechanisms are still unclear due to complexity
of the diseases. On the other hand, researches on therapeutics or devices to restore
vision for blind patients have recently made significant progress in the areas of
developing retinal prostheses, cell based therapy, gene therapy, and so forth and some
of these have proceeded to clinical trials. Understanding the pathogenic mechanisms
is still the key for the development of therapeutic strategies to prevent photoreceptor
degeneration and to establish methods to restoring vision. We invite submissions of
original research papers as well as reviews.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Molecular mechanisms of photoreceptor degeneration
Degeneration and regeneration of retinal circuits
Cell based therapy
Gene therapy
Photoreceptor degeneration secondary to traumatic injury
