www.theheraldtorc.com THE HERALD • JANUARY 28, 2015 • PAGE 4 Lady Tigers Aiming to Break Seven-Game Slide This Week By Tony A. Archuleta HERALD Reporter Minus some of their top ball handlers, Hot Springs was unable to overcome a wave of first-half turnovers against Silver on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in Tiger Gym. And a fourth quarter comeback never quite materialized for the home team despite an 11-point second half effort by senior power forward Limor Johnson. With two starters, pointguard Baylee Henderson and shooting guard Maria Chavez, sidelined for the game due to injury, HSHS struggled getting good looks at the basket, while the Lady Colts cashed in on Tiger giveaways for double digit leads most of the night. Compounding the ball control problems for the Lady Tigers, replacement pointguard Madison Smith sustained a minor ankle injury in the second quarter. Silver won the District 3-4A opener 49-37. Johnson led all scorers with a total of 13 points, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that brought HSHS within 35-28. Junior forward Melene Berkstresser also scored in double figures with 11 points on the night. While four other Lady Tigers also contributed buckets, including sophomore post Callie Jo Swaim with five points, Silver was far more productive offensively, with 11 Lady Colts scoring. The first quarter was especially damaging for the Lady Tigers, who only managed a bucket by Johnson while Silver scored 13. The Lady Colts owned a 2513 halftime lead. Buckets by Johnson, Berkstresser and Swaim (two free throws), helped bring Hot Springs within five points (29-24) late in the quarter, but a Silver fast break and a Tiger turnover gave the Colts a 3124 advantage heading into the final quarter. Silver started out the final frame by running a spread offense in order to run some time off the clock. The strategy paid off as Silver’s Tracey Lackey got fouled, hit two free throws and put her team up by nine points. The Lady Tigers made one final surge to come within five points (42-37) with under two minutes left in the game on a bucket by Berkstresser, but Silver outscored the Tigers 7-0 the rest of the way. Hot Springs was scheduled to travel to Ruidoso on Thursday, Jan. 22, for a non-district game, but the game was canceled due to a snowstorm that swept through southern New Mexico and led to travel email: [email protected] & [email protected] DOUBLE DIGITS - Hot Springs junior forward Melene Berkstresser (23) scored 11 points against Silver, helping fuel a third quarter scoring run that got the Tigers within five points. FILLING IN - In the absence of senior starting pointguard Baylee Henderson, Hot Springs junior guard Madison Smith (10) stepped up to run the offense in the District 3-4A opener Tuesday, Jan. 20, against visiting Silver. Smith scored three points early on, before a minor ankle sprain in the second quarter slowed her down a bit. The Lady Colts prevailed 49-37. HERALD photos/TONY A. Hot Springs (5-8 overall, 01 district) was set to resume league play on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with Socorro visiting Tiger Gym. The Lady Warriors beat HSHS 51-47 at the Hope Christian tournament on Jan. 17 in a non-conference match-up. It’s a three-game week for the Lady Tigers, with a nondistrict game against visiting Magdalena on Thursday, Jan. 29 (junior varsity game starts at 4:30 p.m.) and a 34A showdown at Cobre on Friday, Jan. 30. Covarrubias (34), found success going inside against Silver, but the Lady Tigers struggled getting the ball up the floor against the *** Lady Colts’ aggressive full-court press. HSHS Falls at Silver, Cliff League Play Resumes Against Socorro, Cobre, HVH HERALD Staff Hot Springs senior forward Josh Koch had a career night Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Silver in the District 3-4A opener, scoring 22 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Koch shot 71 percent from the field and was 2 of 2 at the free throw line. Silver, a perennial preseason favorite in 3-4A, took a 16-11 first quarter lead, and extended the advantage to 35-25 by halftime. The Colts outscored the Tigers 16-14 in the third frame, and blew the game open in the fourth, with a 22-13 burst for a final score of 73-52. “Our menace, once again, we continue to throw the ball away,” HSHS head coach Gus Cardona said of his team’s 17 total turnovers compared to six steals. The Tigers (5-10, 0-1) were scheduled to play at Tularosa on Thursday, Jan. 22, in a non-conference outing, but the game was canceled due to weather. On Saturday, Jan. 24, the Tigers traveled to Cliff. One again, turnovers were an issue for the Tigers, with 14 giveaways, according to Cardona. A less than stellar field goal shooting percentage (33) contributed to Cliff’s 68-37 win. High scorer for HSHS once again was Koch, the only Tiger to score in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore guard Ryan Johnson added eight points for the Tigers. The Tigers went 2 of 9 from beyond the arc (22 percent) and 13 of 42 on two-point attempts (30 percent). They shot 5 of 9 from the free throw line (55 percent), to go along with 15 offensive rebounds and 16 defensive rebounds. “If I had to say anything went our way, it would probably be the rebounding,” Cardona said. “It seemed like there was a cap on the goal, not to mention the blown opportunity of lay-ups, which has become a chronic problem for us.” Meantime, Cliff seemingly could miss, according to Cardona. Hot Springs was scheduled to resume district play on Tuesday, Jan. 27 against visiting Socorro in Tiger Gym (C-team game starts at 4 p.m.). “I think there is an urgency now to do well in district after losing to Silver,” Cardona said. “By looking at all of the teams, I believe the district (regular season championship) is up for grabs. I still believe that we are still the team to beat.” But Cardona, said, Hot Springs will have to play more aggressively and start taking advantage of its superior height and depth. The Tigers host Cobre on Friday, Jan. 30 (C-team game starts at 4 p.m.). They travel to Hatch Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 3. *** Subscribe to The Herald (575) 894.2143 email: [email protected] & [email protected] www.theheraldtorc.com TheHeraldNM 5552 And Growing!
