INTRODUCTION This guide has been written to help you get up-and-running quickly with the Pakedge S24P8 Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch, with a few assumptions in mind: a. You have a working knowledge of networking hardware configurations b. You have a working knowledge of PC operations QUICK SWITCH OVERVIEW This Quick Start Guide has been written for the S24P8 Gigabit PoE switch. The Front Panel of the S24P8 (shown in Figure 1) has several LEDs to display the status of the switch ports. The explanations of the lights are found in Table1. Table 1: LED Light Explanation S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 3 The rear panel (Figure 2) is where the connection ports to power and other equipment are located. Speed: 38400bps, RJ45 interface Table 2: S24P8 Rear Panel Port Description S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 4 PREPARING TO INSTALL THE SWITCH Installing the S24P8 is similar to installing any other PoE Switch. If you have installed an Ethernet switch before, the process will be very similar. Tools Required: •Phillips Screwdriver (if using rack-mount brackets) •PC or Laptop with Ethernet Interface and a web browser (an integrated DB-9 port or USB-to-Serial adapter may be necessary if you would like to use the console interface) •Ethernet Cable INSTALLATION 1.Open box and remove unit. 2. OPTIONAL: If mounting the switch in a standard 19” AV rack, attach the rack-mounting brackets that come with the S24P8 to the sides. If not rack-mounting, ensure that the switch is physically mounted near power and network connections. (i.e., backbone switch or firewall/router). 3.Connect power to the device. 4.Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to any port on the switch. 5.You are now ready to configure the switch to an IP address that matches your network. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 5 CONFIGURATION METHODS There are two ways to complete the initial configuration of the S24P8 switch – either by using the standard IP address and a web browser or the console cable and a terminal emulation program such as PuTTY or HyperTerminal. IMPORTANT NOTE: This Quick Start Guide only provides instructions for resetting the IP Address of the switch and restoring it back to Factory Default with the console cable. Please reference the User’s Manual on our website for additional CLI commands. CONFIGURING THE SWITCH USING THE WEB INTERFACE 1.Connect the switch to power. Power LED will light up and switch fans will start. 2.Connect a PC or laptop to any standard Ethernet Port on the switch. 3.Configure the PC with the Static IP address of 192.168.1.10, and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and then open any web browser. Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Chrome browsers all work for configuring the S24P8, but Internet Explorer is preferred. 4.In the browser, enter the switch’s default IP address of 192.168.1.205 into the Address Bar and press <ENTER>. 5.A window similar to the one in Figure 3 (p.7) will appear, prompting you for a username and password. Enter admin for the username and leave the password field blank. Then, click “OK” to log into the web administration portal. 6.Once you have logged into the switch, you will see the web interface as pictured in Figure 4 (p.8). We have included common configurations in the next sections for your convenience. To access the full spectrum of configurations, please refer to the User’s Manual on our website. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 7 Figure 4: S24P8 Web Interface S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 8 CHANGING THE IP ADDRESS OF THE SWITCH To change the default IP Address of the switch, please follow these instructions: 1.Open the “IP Configuration” folder in the GUI and click on “IP Address Configuration.” 2.Under “Line Item” select “1.” Your page will reset and you can now enter the new IP Address under “IP Address / Subnet Prefix.” 3.Once you are done, click on “Create/Modify IP Address” and your new IP will be saved as seen in Figure 5. Figure 5: IP Address of the Switch S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 9 SETTING THE DEFAULT GATEWAY IP ADDRESS To set a default gateway on the switch in order to access it from anywhere on the network, please follow these instructions: 1. Open the “IP Configuration” folder in the GUI and click on “Host Static Router Configuration.” 2. Enter “0.0.0.0/0” under “Target Address/Subnet Prefix.” 3. Enter the router’s IP address in the “Next Hop” field. 4.Click “Apply” and you should see a page that resembles Figure 6. Figure 6: Default Gateway S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 10 CONFIGURING VLANs The S24P8 switch has an advanced web interface that allows you to configure each port on the switch to the desired VLAN. It is important to configure the ports on the switch with the correct VLAN settings to reflect what you are trying to accomplish on the network. This Quick Start Guide provides instructions for configuring the ports of the switch when using a Wireless Access Point or a wired connection with VLAN tagging. Table 3: Port Configuration Key Table 3 and Figure 7 provide a network configuration example that you may use as a guide to properly configure the switches on your network. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 11 Figure 7: S24P8 Switch Setup Example with Pakedge’s K62 Kit S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 12 Figure 8: VLAN Configuration CONFIGURING HYBRID PORTS FOR WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS If you are connecting a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to a port, please follow these steps: 1.The first thing to do inside the switch is to create the VLANs. Start by expanding the “VLAN Configuration” folder and then click on “VLAN Configuration.” In the VID field, enter the number of the VLAN you want to create and then click “Apply.” You can repeat this process to create the desired number of VLANs as shown in Figure 8. 2.Next, configure the port to allow the VLANs to pass through. Click on “VLAN Port Configuration” and under the Port dropdown select the port you are connecting the WAP to. Under the model dropdown select “Hybrid,” under “Current VLAN” highlight “vlan1” and then click “Default VLAN.” (Make sure vlan1 is an untagged member of the port). S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 13 Figure 9: Correct VLAN Port Configuration for WAP 3.Now click on the next VLAN in the list under “Current VLAN,” and then click on “tagged.” You will need to do this for all remaining VLANs in the “Current VLAN” list that you want to use with this port. You can also highlight all the VLANs at once and click “tagged” to make them all members of the port. The end result should look something like Figure 9. 4.You may repeat this process to configure any necessary ports the same way in the switch. NOTE: The port which will be used to connect to the router must be configured as a “Hybrid” port. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 14 Figure 10: Wired VLAN Tagging CONFIGURING ACCESS PORTS FOR VLAN TAGGING 1.Click and open the “VLAN Configuration” folder. 2.Select the port you want to change under the Port column, then select “Access” under Model. Select the desired VLAN under “Current VLAN” and click on “Default VLAN.” The configuration should look like Figure 10. 3.Once the port is configured this way, any device that plugs into that port will receive the assigned VLAN tag. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 15 Figure 11: VLAN Information NOTE: To check your current configuration, you can go to “VLAN Information” and see a summary of which ports are configured to which VLANs. See Figure 11. NOTE: The switch will save every configuration you perform automatically and load it the next time the switch is rebooted. You DO NOT need to hit the save button after every change. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 16 Figure 12: PoE Power Control POWER CYCLING PoE PORTS The S24P8 switch allows the user to power cycle each port from the GUI screen of the switch. This feature is very useful if you have devices that are located in hard-to-reach places and need to be power-cycled for any reason. NOTE: Only the devices that are powered on through PoE will be affected by the power cycle. Please follow these instructions to power cycle PoE devices: 1. Within the GUI of the switch, expand the “PoE Power Control” folder and click on “PoE Power Control.” You should see a screen similar to Figure 12. 2. Next to the “PoE Port” drop down menu, select the port you wish to power cycle. 3. In the “PoE Power Status” drop down menu, select “disable” and click “Apply.” You have now successfully turned off power to that port. 4. To turn power back on, select the port you wish to turn on and choose “enable” in the “PoE Power Status” field. Then click “Apply” and your port will begin sending power to the device. 5. Wait 2-3 minutes for your device to start working properly. You should then have access to it if everything is working properly on the network. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 17 CONFIGURING THE SWITCH USING THE SUPPLIED CONSOLE CABLE Configuring the switch using the console cable method is more involved. However, this method is helpful if the Ethernet interfaces are not functioning properly or the incorrect IP address was accidentally set on the switch, rendering it inaccessible through the web interface. 1.In order to connect to the switch, you must first have a PC with a DB-9 serial port or a USB-to-Serial adapter. In addition, you need to use software such as HyperTerminal or PuTTY (available for free on the Internet) to connect to the switch’s command line console. 2.Once you have located the serial port on your computer, plug the supplied Console Cable into the computer and the switch (DB9 end to the computer and Baud Rate 38400 RJ-45 end into the switch’s “Console” port). Character Size 8 3.When your physical connection is set up, configure your terminal software to connect to the switch. You should Parity Code None already know which COM port your PC uses for a serial Stop Bits 1 port (COM1 or COM2 on most computers, COM1 Flow Control None through COM10 if using a USB-to-Serial adapter). Table 4: Default Serial Port Settings for 4.In addition to the COM port number, Table 4 shows Console Connection the necessary settings that must be set in the terminal communications software in order to make a successful connection. 5.Once the connection is properly established, you should see a screen similar to Figure 13 (p.19). S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 18 Figure 13: Console Connection in Terminal Window S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 19 RESETTING THE IP ADDRESS OF THE SWITCH To configure your switch back to the default network IP address of 192.168.1.205 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0, complete the following steps: 1.Establish a connection with the switch using the instructions previously listed. You will see a screen similar to the one in Figure 13. Once this screen appears, type enable and hit <ENTER>. You will see the prompt change from Switch> to Switch#. 2.Type conf t and press <ENTER>. 3.Type interface vlan1 and press <ENTER>. 4.Type ip address 192.168.1.205/24 and press <ENTER>. 5.Press <CTRL> Z. 6.Type write (you will see Building and writing configuration ...). 7.Type copy run start (you will see Building and writing configuration ...). 8.Your switch should now be accessible from the network. S24P8 QUICK START GUIDE 20 RESETTING THE SWITCH TO FACTORY DEFAULT NOTE: RESETTING THE SWITCH TO FACTORY DEFAULT WILL DELETE ALL OF YOUR CONFIGURATIONS. 1.Establish a connection with the switch using the console cable. You will see a screen similar to the one in Figure 13 (p.19). Once this screen appears, type enable and hit <ENTER>. You will see the prompt change from Switch> to Switch#. 2.Type delete startup-config and press <ENTER> 3.When you see: Do you wish to continue? [Y/N] – press <Y> 4.Now, type reset and press <ENTER>, then press <Y> 5.The switch will automatically reboot and will be restored to factory default.
