Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades From Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA & in conjunction with the GSGLA Camporee: GSGLA Team Song Camporee October 2012 1 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades Introduction This booklet contains the lyrics for 76 songs identified by a group of long-time Girl Scout singers as a kind of core collection of songs enjoyed by Girl Scouts through the years. Some effort was made to assign songs to the year they were published, if known, but often a song was placed in the decade that the Scouts remembered learning it in. In any case, there is no need to sing them in any particular order. A small subset of songs is called out as The Basic Eight: songs that together express a number of key Girl Scout traits and values that we feel all Girl Scouts should know. These are identified in the book with an asterisk following the song title. Where we had supplemental information about a song’s provenance or composer, we’ve provided it as a “Song Snippet.” The file is formatted for 2-sided printing and being collected in a binder. General Singing Instructions: • On Rounds: everyone sings the whole thing through once, then the parts come in as the numbers indicate. Sing the song the number of times there are parts; i.e., if there are 3 parts, everyone sings the song three times through. You can always do a smaller number of parts than is shown if there are not enough singers, or they are very new to singing rounds. • Song actions or instructions are in italics 2 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades The Basic Eight* Brownie Smile Song G For Generosity Girl Scouts Together Hello Make New Friends On My Honor Sing Together When Ere You Make A Promise These eight songs together express key Girl Scout traits and values. 1910s Daisy, Daisy Hark to the Chimes Home on the Range Taps When Ere You Make a Promise* White Coral Bells 5 1920s Chairs to Mend For Health and Strength Great Tom is Cast Hello* Waddlee-Atcha We’re All Together Again 7 1930s Brownie Smile Song* Our Chalet Song Rise Up, O Flame Sing Sing Together* (3 part Round) Sarasponda The Ash Grove (Down Yonder Green Valley) This Land is Your Land White Sand and Gray Sand (3 part round) 9 3 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades 1940s Don Nobis Pacem Girl Scouts Together* Kookaburra My Paddle/Canoe Song Peace I Ask of thee O’ River/Peace of the River Rose 12 1950s Barges Dona Edelweiss G For Generosity* Have Fun I Love the Mountains Michael Row Your Boat Ashore Music Alone Shall Live 14 1960s 500 Miles Blowin’ in the Wind Buddies & Pals Girl Scout Spirit I Know A Place If I Had A Hammer Kum Ba Ya Linger Moon on the Meadow One Bottle Pop Reach Where Have All the Flowers Gone 17 1970s Coast-to-Coast Country Roads Flicker of the Campfire Hear the Lively Song Jamie Boy Little Canoe 22 4 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades On My Honor* On The Loose The Garden Song 1980s A Ram Sam Sam Alive Awake Alert Enthusiastic Dum Da Dada Oompa Grace Turn the World Around Weenie Man 26 1990s 40 Years on an Iceberg Banjo Song Black Socks Boom Chicka Boom Daisy on My Toe I Can Make a Difference Moose (Juice) 30 2000s Cowgirl Grace Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) GS Beat I am One Voice No Bananas in The Sky (chant) Say When When I Was One/Pirate Song 33 2012 & Beyond The WAGGS World Song 35 5 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades 1910s Daisy, Daisy Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true I'm half crazy over the love of you It won't be a stylish marriage I can't afford a carriage But you’ll look sweet, upon the seat Of a bicycle built for two Frequently sung second verse: Harry, Harry here is your answer true: I'm not crazy over the likes of you It won't be a stylish marriage You can't afford a carriage And I'll be switched if I’ll be hitched On a bicycle built for two! Or at the bright noontide, in solitude wander Amid the dark shades of the lonely Ash Grove. 'Tis there, where the blackbird is cheerfully singing, Each warbler en-chants with his note from the tree. Ah, then little think I of sorrow or sadness, The Ash Grove, enchanting, spells beauty for me. The Ash Grove, how graceful, how plainly 'tis speaking, The harp thro' it playing has language for me. Whenever the light, thro' its branches is breaking, A host of kind faces is gazing on me. The friends of my childhood again are before me, Each step wakes a mem'ry as freely I roam. With soft whispers laden, it's leaves rustle o'er me, The Ash Grove, the Ash Grove, a-lone is my home. Song Snippet: “The Ash Grove” is a traditional Welsh folk tune, though the current words date from the early 1800’s. 11 Songs Sung by Girl Scouts Through the Decades This Land is Your Land by Woodie Guthrie 1940/44 Chorus: This land is your land, this land is my land From California to the New York Island, From the redwood forest, to the Gulf Stream waters, This land was made for you and me. Our flag on high, Is never furled throughout the world, For hope shall never die! We must unite for what is right, In friendship true and strong, Until the earth, In its rebirth, Shall sing our song! Shall sing our song! All those who loved the true and good, Whose promises were kept, With humble mind, whose acts were kind, whose honor never slept; These were the free! And we must be, Prepared like them to live, To give to all, Both great and small, All we can give! All we can give! Song Snippet: The “World Song,” highlights the principles and spirit of the Girl Scout and Girl Guide Movement. It was adopted in 1950 at the 13th World Conference in Oxford, England with the original in French lyrics. The music was originally composed as a march for one of Finland's oldest Scout companies and was adapted with the approval of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. This is much better known by Girl Guides in other countries than here in the US, and we want it to be better known here, which is why it’s in the ‘future’. 36
