Welcome Zone
UniCycle pop-up shop
Open 8-26 September, Mon-Fri, 09.00 - 17.00
The UniCycle pop up shop is open every
weekday in the Welcome Zone. It sells recycled
and reconditioned stuff for you and your home,
so it’s well worth checking out if you’re moving
into your own place. As well as handy house
things like kitchen starter kits, it sells stationery,
books, clothing, shoes and accessories, all at
bargain prices.
Things are getting busy. If you fancy exploring
a little further afield, join one of our organised
trips into Manchester. Or, if sport floats your
boat, there’s loads of that going on with games,
matches and activities to suit all levels of fitness.
The Welcome Zone is the heart of the action.
This is where to come if you have any questions
about starting University or want to know what
activities are taking place during Welcome. Or
maybe you could just come and hang out: say
hello, play games, drink free tea and coffee we’re pretty easy going.
Also this week in the Welcome Zone:
If you’re moving into Horlock or Constantine
Halls, pick up your keys from the
Accommodation Desk in the Welcome Zone.
If you move in this week, USSU and Shock
student radio will welcome you to your new
home with three barbecues across all our
accommodation sites.
Any Kitchpack or eShop purchases you’ve made
can be collected from the Students’ Union shop
in Horlock Court.
Don’t forget to collect a Students’ Union
(USSU) festival lanyard and Welcome clubnight
wristband.
See www.salfordstudents.com for more info.
Campus walkabout
Find your way around campus with a studentguided walkabout. The first one leaves the
Welcome Zone at 11am and lasts about an hour.
There’s a walk on each day of Welcome.
Information desk and drop-ins
As well as the information desk, which is open
every weekday during Welcome, there are
drop-in sessions with different staff. Have a
theological chat with a University chaplain, ask
a disability advisor about a support plan, or chat
with our wellbeing team about healthy lifestyles.
If you’re on international semester exchange,
this is where you’ll find our Erasmus advisor and
drop off your paperwork.
There are lots of interactive workshops in
University House so pop in if you want to learn
how to live on your student loan, find part-time
work, polish up your CV or brush up your study
skills.
The Students’ Union goes mobile and leaves
University House to wander across campuses
saying hello and giving you free stuff. They’re
also hosting a tea party and organising dodgeball.
Oh, and all day Friday, my beauties, it’s Talk Like
A Pirate Day. If you want to get with the pirate
programme, pop down to the pop-up costume
shop in University House – LuvYaBabes is there
all day.
If you’re an international student, check-in
and register at Clifford Whitworth this week
and come to the party Erasmus is having for
you in Atmosphere Kitchen and Bar on the 18
September.
Event details and tickets from the USSU website:
www.salfordstudents.com/welcome
Monday 22 - Sunday 28 September
You can also meet your student reps at one of
the USSU roadshow events and find out more if
you’re thinking about becoming a rep yourself.
Welcome events planner can be found at www.salford.ac.uk/getready
The guys at USSU are really busy this week. They
also host a day trip to Liverpool, a ‘Choose your
own adventure’ day at the Trafford Centre and
open their new kitchen and bar, ‘Atmosphere,’ in
University House.
Week 3.
Induction week – things just got real. Meet your
tutors and coursemates, find out which group
you’re in and learn more about your course.
Look for your course induction schedule at
www.getready.salford.ac.uk/inductions.
4
Welcome club nights are held in town, in
a different location every night to help you
find your way around the local drinking
estabishments.
This week’s all about the fun times. There’s
mass Zumba on Monday, Oscar the HypnoDog
on Tuesday (no idea) and more than 80 clubs
and societies at the Union’s Activities Fair on
Wednesday and Thursday. Friday’s the big one –
it’s whats commonly known around these parts
as Free Pizza at the Trade Fair Day.
If you haven’t already done it, complete
registration and pick up your Student ID card
this week.
Get organised.
Your to-do list. Not all of these will apply to you,
but make sure you do what you need to before
your classes begin.
Still need somewhere to live?
Course induction
Student Halls are a great option. They’re cheap
and hassle-free and all your bills are included in
your rent, plus you’ll be living alongside other
students.
Don’t miss your course induction from 22
September. You’ll meet your tutors and all your
coursemates, find out which groups you’re in
and get loads of information about modules,
deadlines and other essential elements of your
course.
Go to www.accommodation.salford.ac.uk,
or ask at the Welcome Hub. If you want rent
privately, come and see us anyway – we’ll tell you
where to go to get the best and the fairest deals.
Pay your fees
Need a bank account?
You can’t register without a payment plan, so
unless you have a tuition fee loan from Student
Finance (who will pay us direct) you need to do
a bank transfer or set up a payment plan. There’ll
be staff at Clifford Whitworth during Welcome
who can help you sort it out.
We have a branch of Santander on campus, next
to Clifford Whitworth library. There are lots of
other high street banks in and around Salford.
Register
If you registered online, all you need to do is
show up and collect your ID card and we’ll do
the rest. If you’re an international student or
you didn’t register online, you’ll have to go to
Clifford Whitworth Library from 15 September to
complete your registration.
Visit www.getready.salford.ac.uk/registration
to find out what you need to bring along.

to see what enterprise is all about. Throughout
the year, we run weekly Enterprise Academy

Study skills
We can support you through your studies in lots
of ways. We hold regular study skills workshops,
or if you prefer one-to-one help, make an
appointment to see one of our study skills
consultants. We also produce basic study guides
that you can read in your own time.
Support for Care Leavers
We’re very proud to offer quality support for care
leavers. The University is one of only a handful
to gain exemplary status in the Buttle UK Quality
Mark 2014, which measures the commitment of
further and higher education establishments to
young people who are in or leaving care.
Our support covers accommodation, finances
(including a limited number of bursaries),
emotional and academic support. We encourage
students who have been in care or are taking
Social Work and Social Policy courses to volunteer
to help raise aspirations of looked after children
in Salford secondary schools, helping them to see
university as a valid option.
If you’re a care leaver, you’ll also be invited to
sit on the board of Salford Community Action
Network, a partnership which helps to shape the
futures of care-experienced people in Salford.
Email [email protected] or

Support for student carers
Advice and wellbeing
If you support a sick, disabled or frail family
member (including children), friend or neighbour,
either formally or informally, we understand that
you’ll need some flexibility.
It’s not unusual for you to feel homesick, anxious
or unsure about life at University, and lots of your
fellow students will feel the same. If you’d like to
speak to someone about your concerns you can
talk in confidence to a member of our specially
trained wellbeing team. They’re there to help you
address any difficulties you’re facing and help
you overcome them. The wellbeing team will be
available during Welcome, but you can speak to
them at any time.
Student Life Advice Desks are open at:

disadvantage in their studies because they have
caring responsibilities, and we can arrange
an individual support plan based on your
circumstances and needs. We also have an online
forum where you can chat to other people in
the University in the same situation: it’s at
www.advice.salford.ac.uk/carers
If you’re a carer, email [email protected] or
telephone 0161 295 2152 for more information.
We’ll also be running a session for student carers
during Welcome.
Support for Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Trans (LGBT)
Students
Students at the University of Salford have one
of Europe’s most vibrant and diverse places for
LGBT people on their doorstep. Manchester has
a thriving scene, with something to do every
night of the week and plenty more at weekends.
The University itself has its own LGBT Student
Society which meets every Tuesday evening,
and is also heavily involved in celebrating LGBT
History Month, IDAHO and Manchester Pride. The
University also sponsors the Peel Park Pink Picnic,
Salford’s annual LGBT pink picnic held every July.
We have a dedicated LGBT contact:
email [email protected] or call 0161 295 2152.

with both the local area and
wider region.
Car parking
Getting Around Campus
Bus
There’s limited car parking at Adelphi, Peel

Get around the campus in ways
that will save your pennies and
the planet.
The University operates a free Campus Link
bus that completes a circuit of the campus and
residential sites every 30 minutes. Timetables,
which include bus stop locations, are available
from all receptions and Student Life.
Walking
The privately-operated number 50 service runs
between Peel Park and MediaCityUK and is free
between sites if you show your student ID card.
Normal fees apply if you’re travelling beyond
either campus.

Dedicated footpaths are laid out in direct routes
across and between campuses; however there
will be some slight disruption during the current
construction period. Future plans (when the
development phase is complete by the end of
2015) will limit inner campus vehicles to service
and delivery vehicles and disabled car parking.
