Contact: Jenny Wennell, [email protected] One School, One Book – Manchester Elementary School During the month of February, Manchester Elementary School is participating in “One School, One Book”, a program that promotes literature at home and the school environment through the use of one common book. The school will be reading The World According to Humphrey. Each student and classroom teacher will receive a copy of the book, as well as a schedule for reading during the month. In order to engage the students and their families, an evening event entitled “A Dinner Date with Humphrey” will be held on Tuesday, February 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. The evening will include dinner and a display of school projects and student work. A guest reader will entertain the students and rotations throughout the classrooms will take place to support the book. Ecker Boardroom at the Board of Education offices, located at 125 North Court Street in Westminster. Agenda items will include the adoption of the FY16 Operating Budget. In addition, the Board will begin discussions on make-up days for inclement weather. There will be time for citizen participation at this meeting. The public is encouraged to attend. The purpose is to promote string instrument performance and to encourage current students to continue to participate in school orchestra throughout their public school years. This Suzuki-style performance begins with the FSK High School orchestra. Middle and elementary school students will be added as the performance continues. The evening ends with a mass orchestra of 100 or more musicians in grades 4-12. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The workshop, entitled “Around the World of Special Education”, gives participants an overview of the special education process and acquaints them with the terminology and procedures involved in special education. Topics will include the definition of special education terms, federal and state laws, the special education cycle, eligibility, advocacy (parent involvement in the IEP process), Individualized Education Plans, and resources. This musical will be held on Friday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, February 21, at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m., at Winters Mill High School in Westminster. Snow dates are February 27 and 28 at the same times and location. Those who wish to attend are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance to help reduce long lines at the ticket counter. Tickets are available for a donation of $5.00. In addition, attendees are asked to bring a can of food to be donated to Carroll County Food Sunday. All bags are themed and filled with great contents. Themes include Ravens, Orioles, MD Terrapins, gardening, cooking, scrapbooking, golf, car essentials, office, dogs, gift wrap, pool toys, movies, technology, FSK Graduation (includes 2 reserved tickets to graduation and a reserved parking pass), FSK Prom (includes 2 free FSK Prom tickets), and FSK Spirit (includes 2 free FSK spring sports passes). There will also be a special 31 bag containing hundreds of dollars of gift cards and gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and bingo will begin at 7 p.m. The event will include food, a 50/50 drawing, door prizes, and numerous vendors. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. The event will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carroll County Arts Center, located at 91 West Main Street in Westminster. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. A performance by a high school jazz band and book displays from the school system and the public library also will be featured during the reception. The read-in will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Local high school students will share book excerpts and poetry written by African American writers.
