AS WE GATHER
We welcome all who have come to this house of God today. God can and does meet us here in special
ways in our common worship. But God also comes to us unexpectedly, just as He did when He surprised
us by appearing on an ordinary night in an obscure town in the form of a baby boy. Please introduce
yourself at the door and fill out an attendance card available in the pew. If you would like a visit, prayer or
just information, please note that on the card.
PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
Gracious God of endings and beginnings, we commit to Your grace and forgiveness the year now
completed and commend to Your kindness the year now beginning. Throughout the coming weeks and
months make the presence of Your Holy Spirit known in our lives, drawing us ever closer to Jesus, our
Lord and our Redeemer, in whose wondrous name we make all of our beginnings. Amen.

In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our
Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
O almighty God, merciful Father,
I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have
ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am
heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless
mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved
Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the
Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my
Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of
the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And with thy spirit.
P Let us pray.
O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your
heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son,
our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Old Testament Reading
21
Do you not know? Do you not hear?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
23
who brings princes to nothing,
and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.
24
Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows on them, and they wither,
and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
25
To whom then will you compare me,
that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26
Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name,
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power
not one is missing.
27
Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the LORD,
and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
Isaiah 40:21–31
5
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
31
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gradual
Praise the LORD, all | nations!*
Extol him, all | peoples!
For great is his steadfast | love toward us,*
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory | due his name;*
bring an offering, and come in- | to his courts!
Epistle
Ps. 117:1–2a; 96:8
1 Corinthians 9:16–27
16
For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me.
Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but not
of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18What then is my reward? That in my
preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the
gospel. 19For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more
of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as
one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.
21
To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but
under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, that
I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
23
I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24Do you not
know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may
obtain it. 25Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable
wreath, but we an imperishable. 26So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.
27
But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should
be disqualified.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 1st chapter, vs. 29-39
Mark 1:29–39
29
And immediately [Jesus] left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with
James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him
about her. 31And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she
began to serve them. 32That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or
oppressed by demons. 33And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34And he healed
many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit
the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35And rising very early in the morning, while it was
still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and
those who were with him searched for him, 37and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is
looking for you.” 38And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there
also, for that is why I came out.” 39And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their
synagogues and casting out demons.

He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,

The Words of Our Lord
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had
given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body,
which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it
to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is
shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
Me.”

Today we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Body and Blood in which we joyfully receive Christ’s Body
and Blood, under bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins. As we celebrate the Sacrament we also
give public confession to our unity in the Christian Faith. This unity of faith in what we believe is normally
identified through the rite of Confirmation. Therefore, we invite communicant members of this
congregation, or another congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to commune. Visitors
who desire to partake in the Lord’s Supper are encouraged and welcome to join in a class of instruction
leading to confirmation. Please speak to Pastor Laux regarding your desire and may you receive the gifts
of our Lord Jesus through faith this Divine Service.

There is a lovely new piece of art hanging on the wall behind the altar. This beautiful work was the
brainchild of Esther Miller and was crafted by her with hand painting done by Ilene McQuality. Here, in
Esther’s words, is an explanation of how the quilt came into being and what each square symbolizes:
Pastor Laux, the inspiration for this wall hanging came from a quilt that was
on display at St. Lorenz Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod in
Frankenmuth, Michigan. Our wall hanging represents our Trinity Lutheran.
Row 1 - the 1st block is, of course, a replica of one of our stained glass windows;
the 2nd block is the dove in flight as a reminder of Jesus' Baptism; the 3rd block
is a replica of our large cross in the sanctuary and symbolizes the Crucifixion.
Row 2 - the 1st block is our pulpit from where you teach us all about God's word;
the 2nd block is our beautiful house of worship; the 3rd block is the communion
cup and reminds us of this Holy Sacrament.
Row 3 - the 1st block is the Nativity Scene and reminds us of the true meaning
of Christmas; the 2nd block is the Holy Bible and the verse "God so loved the
World...........” and it’s one of my favorite verses and promises us eternal life;
the 3rd block is the Lamb which reminds us that He is reigning on His throne.
This project was so inspirational and I felt as though God himself was working
through me. There were many times when I felt it would never be finished. The
persistence and physical stamina had to come from a Superior Being. The
choices for the blocks also seemed to jump out at me when I was searching for
ideas. It has been a real blessing to create something that has so much
meaning for me. My hope is that you and our congregation get as much
meaning and pleasure from this as I have.
