The USA Hockey curriculum was designed to be taught over two years whereas our four classes are taught in 52 weeks. Sessions are often repeated in order to master the skills needed to play in organized hockey leagues. Attending sticktime sessions, skills & drills classes, taking private lessons and attending public skating sessions will help improve skills. Introductory hockey classes are offered every 4 weeks! A great way to try hockey to see if you like it Beginner skaters, Skating skills are essential to being able to participate in a Hockey class. If you can’t skate across the ice without assistance, we recommend that you consider enrolling in a Pre-Alpha class through our Learn to Skate program. Class Descriptions Parent/Child Hockey 1*: This class is for kids ages 7 and younger. A parent may participate in the class along with their child. Parents will need to fill out a registration form to enroll in the class, and sign a parent waiver form. The class uses the Hockey 1 curriculum. This is a great way to introduce kids to structured hockey classes. Children may attend this class by themselves. Hockey 1*: This class is geared for new players, 8 or older. Hockey 2, 3, & 4 are a stepped learning program designed to master the skills needed to play hockey. *Parent Orientation: Orientations will be held at 7pm on the Wednesday after the first week of class for Parent & Me and Hockey 1 Parents and students. Kids can skate the public session free while parents attend the orientation. All Youth Learn to Play Hockey parents are welcome to attend. You must attend this orientation to check out the loaner gear packages, otherwise, only helmets, sticks, shin guards, and skates will be available for use for the duration of the semester. Parent Orientation will be held March 11th, 2015 for the upcoming classes. Equipment Requirements: Full equipment, including shin pads, hockey pants, shoulder pads, elbow pads, helmet, and gloves are required for Hockey 2, 3 & 4 classes. Skates, helmets, and sticks are available at the rental counter. Loaner Hockey Gear: Loaner Hockey Gear bags can be checked out for Hockey 1 and Parent & Me. A $100 deposit is required. Gear for Parent & Me and Hockey 1 are issued only at the Parent Orientation. If you do not attend the Parent Orientation, you will not be able to check out a Loaner Gear Package. Class format/length: Learn to Play Hockey semesters are 13 weeks in duration and last one hour and 15 minutes. The first hour is warm-up, followed by structured drills and games designed to reinforce skills being taught. The final 15 minutes is “pond hockey fun time” designed for the kids to play unsupervised hockey among themselves like they would on an outdoor pond. All classes will be conducted in a cross ice format using 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 of the ice. Classes of less than 5 students may be cancelled or combined with another class. Cost: The $195 fee is payable upon registration. Online registration is available. A split payment plan is also available and will include a $5 handling fee. $95.00 is due at enrollment and $100 is due April 20th. Late enrollments are allowed with Hockey Director approval and fees will be pro-rated. Payment plans are not allowed on prorated sign ups. No check payments allowed with payment plan. Students receive: Skatetown Hockey jersey (new hockey 1 students only), voucher booklet with one free skate rental voucher for each class, a coupon for 10% discount off hockey skates, and (2) two–for–one skating passes to any public skating session. All passes expire the last day of classes. Missed Classes: Make-up classes will not be permitted. Hockey 4: Ask about our Practice-Only Red Shirt Program This program allows players to attend league practices, but not participate in the games. During practices, players will gain a better understanding of hockey fundamentals, improve skills and get to know the coaches and league players. Once the coaches and player feels that they are ready to play in games, they will be placed on a roster after the pro-rated fees are paid. This is a great option for players transitioning from the Learn to Play Hockey program into organized leagues. The price is half of the normal league fees. Players must get Hockey Director approval and fees will be prorated through the end of the season. Email the Hockey Director at [email protected] if you want to sign up for the Red Shirt Program.
